This book. WOW.
I'm not sure what I was thinking this book was going to be about...but it blew me away.
Set in 1999, our main character is given a second chance to work in the medical field after being caught stealing (and being addicted to) opioids. In his new hospital, the gritty and understaffed St. Luke's, a troubling amount of people are dying. And our former opioid addicted doctor is at the center of the investigation.
Told in a very matter of fact way - full of technical terms to remind you that a doctor is telling the story - we go on a journey to find the true medical serial killer and learn of others throughout history. There is disappointment and heartbreak sprinkled in for good measure
I found the addition of the historical serial killers to be fascinating, though I imagine some readers may not enjoy this.
This would be fans of medical mysteries.

Unfortunately I couldn’t finish this book - it’s clear the author has medical knowledge, which is great, but the book felt a little too technical at times. It felt very slow and I wanted to get to at least 30%, but honestly I’ve been trying to read this for about three days now and haven’t been able to make much progress.

I’m giving it no rating//3 stars in the interest of fairness though; it seems like other people enjoyed it so maybe they’ll have a better time with it.

This is such a fascinating multi-layered story.
A young Scottish doctor, fresh out of rehab for opioid dependency finds a job at a hospital in London.
He rebuilds his life and starts looking forward to his future again. He even makes a few friends, especially his effervescent roommate, George.

But then people in the hospital start dying. And as it’s looked into closer, the numbers are too high to be a coincidence.

Everything starts to spiral and no one feels safe anymore.

Peppered with loads of medical murders and murderers this is such a compelling story.
I did find it a little long winded but that’s not a huge issue. Loved it. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for my copy.

This was a spectacular read. I was hooked after a few pages. Simon Stephenson has experience as a physician so this story draws from a lot of his experiences! It was thrilling and unforgettable. Beware though it will haunt you long after you finish it!

What In The Wholy Hoot Hoot?! 😳😯🤯😳🤯

⊰ 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 ⊱

What The Fluffer Butter Nutter?! Flappin' Turkeys! You all already know that thrillers are genre to read, but when it comes to medical thrillers / suspense - that's my absolute favourite kryptonite! And this book completely & totally nailed it! Think the 90's show, ER, but with a suspenseful thriller twist in a book. I cannot believe how I sailed through this divinely yummy medical conundrum! Spine-tingling with an injection of fear.

Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: A young doctor has had to find a new job as a practicing doctor and when a position opens up at St. Luke's, just outside of London, he jumps at the chance to start right away. He quickly learns how short-staffed and many ill patients grant this hospital, but as some patients die from seemingly innocuous circumstances, a post-mortem on an elderly patient catches the eye of the police and soon, an investigation will show that this is not the first or last of a murderer. The question is, who? And why is this doctor under suspicion?

The amount of research & accuracy Stephenson put into this novel, as well as using his own physician experience, was so well done & made it that much more intriguing and capturing. He amped up the anti, the suspicion, the doubt and wonder and kept it going until the unseeing twist of an ending. This completely satisfied my medical appetite like a three-course dinner at a five star restaurant!

Thank you to NetGalley & Harlequin Trade Publishing for this ARC.

Lets just all take a minute to appreciate this kick ass cover.

When I picked this book, it was the cover that I instantly gravitated toward. Mysterious and engaging.

Now, the title? Okay, hook, line, sinker. You got me, no need to twist my arm.

I have a career in healthcare (that I absolutely love!!!) So, when it comes to books that circulate around medical profession or hospital setting, I instantly have to have it. The amount of knowledge and research that Simon Stephenson put into this book shows on every page.

I was instantly intrigued and consumed by this book. I will be honest with you, I could not sleep this morning and 4am isn't exactly the right time to put the TV on and wake my household. So I grabbed my ipad and BAM! , Im late for work.

But.... I did finish Sometimes People Die!!

This book was expertly written and had the perfect pace. I loved all the details and how accurate the medical knowledge was . The twist was one I could not see coming and was quite floored.

I would highly recommend this book to friends and family !

This was a highly suspenseful and engaging book! I thought at different points, I had figured it out but was not prepared for its many twists. I found it to be a difficult book to stop reading!

It was okay. Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of medical information and procedures thrown in. Most of the characters come off as flat. I did like the little twist at the end.

Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I wouldn’t say this is a thriller and it can be a bit of a slow burn at times, but over all it was a really enjoyable read! I liked all the medical information in here.

Special thank you to Harlequin Trade Publishing, Hanover Square Press, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this digital ARC of Sometimes People Die.

The cover immediately caught my eye - plus I always enjoy books from HTP. I thought for sure it would be about some sort of opioid issue. While opioids played a part in the story this books is NOT a medical thriller - but don't' worry you will enjoy it! Its invigorating and hard to put down.

A young Scottish doctor is caught stealing and using opioids. He is then deemed not fit to practice but then winds up at St Lukes, a rough London hospital desperate for doctors. You will dive deep in to the life in a hospital (something I know well. as a doctor)...

The book is full of other great characters too, like George the orthopedic surgeon. but then it gets dark...patients are dying from an opioid overdoes at the hands of those that should be caring for them. Get to see a dark side of medicine that will keep you engaged!

It's obvious the writer has vast medical knowledge, but the book was extremely slow and did not make it past my 20% DNF checkpoint. If more action had occurred earlier, I would've stayed the course as I found the writing clear. Rated 3 stars for fairness.
