Brianna has been through a lot mentally and physically and is now dealing with a injury that's made her sister a bit unbearable with her worry. But now she's back on the mend and trying her best to better herself and get out of the family's house unfortunately that means dealing with a roommate. Caleb is pretty much with his wife for show they both know it but it works for what they are doing. Caleb never expected for old feelings to come back for Brianna after breaking her heart and now they are looking for second shot.
This has all those small-town vibes if you love that kinda thing you'll enjoy this, it had the nosey bodies, the gossipers, the sense of community and with a bit of second chance romance. I mean theres the whole issue of Caleb being married and having a stepchild he's raised since birth but it seems his heart wants what it wants. Then theres the whole complication that got him married to his first wife and the benefits with staying with her for however long they need but yea theres going to be a lot of things going on if Brianna and Caleb want to work something out because it seems the fire never died and there was things in the way that made it hard for them to be with eachother in the past. Overall this was a pretty enjoyable read and I really liked it.

I must say this right off the top – I have never been disappointed by the writings of Debbie Mason and At Home on Marigold Lane is no exception. As far as I am concerned – I want to live in Highland Falls. Ms. Mason’s storytelling is so good that I feel like a member of the community, being sad for various community members when things go wrong, happy tears when life goes oh so right, and just coasting by when life is just happening.
At Home on Marigold Lane is the fifth installment of the Highland Falls series and can be read as a stand-alone title. Though I must say – knowing some of the townsfolks add a certain amount to the story. This is a second chance romance with all the right ingredients.
Brianna MacLeod had moved back to Highland Falls a little over a year ago (living at the family’s inn on Mirror Lake) to recover from her divorce from her abusive husband Richard and a near fatal fall. To make things a wee bit harder for Bri – her ex-fiancé Cal (Highland Falls’ Hometown Hero) still lived in Highland Falls as a successful doctor working at the local hospital – and the doctor overseeing a portion of her recovery! In order for Bri’s sister and brother-in-law to finally go on their long-postponed honeymoon – Bri must convince them that she is on solid ground with respect to her recovery (she’s not…but she must pretend). Bri decides moving out on her own will set the stage for making everyone believe she is better. Well, that idea becomes fraught with challenges -> Bri has a roommate in the house she has rented! Who one might wonder? Turns out Bri’s once best friend AND sister of ex-fiance Cal (happily married Cal – or is he?). The story evolves from there… and what a story it is.
I found the story filled with romance (remembering her first kiss with Cal at Bridal Veil Falls for example), lighthearted banter (I can see how Bri and Cal were once good together), and some very funny moments. There are also very serious issues brought up as well – abuse being first and foremost. And having the story filled with hunky doctors is never a bad thing 🙂
There are numerous storylines (above and beyond the romance) that kept me entertained. The challenges Cal and his wife (soon-to-be ex) had with their teenage daughter (Izzy) for one. The recovery of Bri was also well written and kept my interest. Intrigue as to why Brid and Cal’s nuptials were called off is another mystery – which is revealed in due time…
The cover of the book is definitely eye-catching…probably the dog, though I do love the big house with the great wrap-around porch.
All in all – another great addition to the Highland Falls series. If you love a well-told tale that will keep your interest throughout the whole story – then I suggest you pick up At Home on Marigold Lane by Debbie Mason. Though in reality – any title written by Ms. Mason is worth reading, in my humble opinion 🙂
I thought the setting and everything was good, and I liked the complicated back ground of the characters but this one just wasn’t for me. I think I like a certain thing in romance novels and this just wasn’t it for me. Thank you to the publisher and netgally for a copy of this arc for review
At Home on Marigold Lane is a nice addition to the Highland Falls series!
After meeting Bri in the previous book I was hoping we'd get her story. She is rebuilding her life in Highland Falls after leaving her abusive ex-husband.
Things get complicated when she reconnects with her first love Cal. It was interesting seeing them get to know each other again as adults with much more going on in their lives. He and his wife Raine were separated but still pretending to be together. I have to admit I was a little worried how the Cal, Bri, and Raine situation would be handled, but it was done well and each character was relatable.
Overall this was a good story with a touch of humor and enough drama to keep things interesting without going over the top. I am looking forward to seeing whose story is next on the series.
Brianna (Bri) MacLeod moves back home to Highland Falls to heal from a disastrous divorce and a near-death experience caused by her ex. She’s at a loss as to what to do with her life since she no longer feels qualified to be a marriage therapist when her own marriage failed. And her sister keeps postponing her honeymoon to take care of Bri, which makes Bri feel awful.
Caleb Scott is the doctor who saved Bri’s life. He’s also her first love. Caleb has a secret, a broken stepdaughter, and a sister in desperate need of help herself after the death of her fiancé in the line of duty. He realizes he still has feelings for Bri, but there’s the problem of his marriage and the secret he and his wife are keeping.
Caleb’s sister is Bri’s former best friend. When the two are thrown together as roommates, can they resolve their past issues and rebuild their friendship?
A story of family dynamics, healing, new beginnings, second chances, and more.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is Book 5 of 5, of the Highland Falls series. Of course, it’s best to read the first 4 to capture all that went on previously, however, there is enough backstory that this book could be enjoyed alone.
Brianna MacLeod is still recovering from a serious, near-death accident the previous year. She is walking with a cane and favoring her injured leg. Dr. Cal Scott had saved her life, as well as her leg. Ten years earlier Bri and Cal had been engaged until he broke if off. Bri had been married and is now divorced, and Dr. Scott is also married now to another surgeon.
The relationship between Bri and Cal is somewhat strained, although living in a small town they do see each other occasionally as she did this day when she bravely went to the grocery store by herself. She somehow lost control of the shopping cart as well as her cane and headed straight for a tower of toilet paper. On this day, it happened that Cal was also in the store and witnessed the collision caused by the runaway grocery cart.
There is a multitude of interesting, relatable characters, long ago secrets are revealed as well as some current truths come out. There were places I had to pause and laugh out loud. a delightful story with charming characters and a story that warmed my heart. I couldn't put this book down and read it straight through until the last page was turned. Intriguing story! .
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book. All opinions and comments are my own.
Cute, Hallmark worthy story. I didn't know it was part of a series. Interested me enough to go and find the other stories in the series. I read a lot of books and this type of romance definitely has a place on my booklist. Sometimes it is just wonderful to escape and enjoy!
I really enjoy the Highland Falls series. This is the sixth story set in this charming small town (5 novels and one short story). While this can be read as a standalone, i recommend at least reading The Inn on Mirror Lake first since it has some of Brianna's backstory.
Brianna and Caleb were high school sweethearts who went separate directions. They are now both back in Highland Springs and there are some sparks. Unfortunately they are both in less than ideal spots to revisit their connection. Brianna, a marriage and family therapist, is recovering from an awful divorce and, while Caleb's marriage has been over for quite some time, he's playing the role of a happily married husband for complicated reasons, not the least of which is his troubled step-daughter.
Brianna and Caleb felt both more flawed and more real than previous couples in this series. This is evident in their actions and choices. To be honest, the situation they found themselves in would be hard to navigate; I don't know if there were any truly easy choices and do think they were doing the best they could. That last sentence tells you how connected I got to the main characters. The multiple storylines expand this beyond a typical romance novel. Since it is a romance novel, so you can count on a HEA, but a lot happens to get there, I appreciated the messiness and complexity of this one.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley or a copy. All opinions are my own.
Honestly, I almost gave up on this one a couple of different times. The writing itself isn't the problem, it was the amount of lying and "don't tell anyone" that was absolutely over the top. I seriously wanted to throw my Kindle at 84% when Raine yelled, "you're trying to seduce my husband". That woman was supposed to be Bri's friend, but she didn't hesitate to throw her under the bus. Also, there's a reason why doctors aren't supposed to treat their family members. Bri was counseling her ex/current boyfriend, his wife, their daughter, her parents and her biological dad. To say there was conflict of interest was a major understatement. It took entirely too for everyone to come clean, and for things to be cleared up. Cal and Bri do get their HEA, I just wish there would have been a lot less drama getting there.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
another hit! I couldn’t wait to read this book, I’ve loved the series so far! Very engaging and I couldn’t put it down!
If you love Hallmark movies that are predictable, cheesy, yet heartwarming, this book is for you. It was the perfect fall comfort read while I was home resting an injury. I love this cover too!
There were so many divorces in this book it was hard to keep up. Second chance romance is usually my favorite, but with all the ex spouses involved it got a little weird. This missed the mark for me. It never touched on Em’s healing, could’ve been more focused on the two women’s journeys for finding themselves but was more about the Trauma Center fundraiser. I did like the setting and the season, though. And I did like the friendship between Em and Bri.
Brianna MacLeod has moved back home after a bad divorce from her ex turned violent. She is trying to heal and doesn't feel like she is still capable of doing her job as a therapist. Living at home isn't going the way she thought it would though and she realizes she needs to move out so she can truly start healing. She moves and soon learns she'll have a roommate to share the house with. Her roommate turns out to be her ex best friend. Brianna was in love with her brother and gothurt in the end, the two went their separate ways and her once great friendship soon followed. Now not only is her once.good friend in her life but her brother lives next door with his wife and daughter. Caleb's home life is complicated. His wife and himself are no longer together but have to pretend for work purposes. Seeing Brianna has brought back tons of feelings but now isn't the time for the two of them to try to make a go of things again. They both would like a second chance but it seems as if everything is working against them. Follow along and see if they can reconnect or is it truly to late.
Great second chance romance with in depth characters and thoughtful writing. I would like to read more from this author.
This is a beautifully written small town romance about Brianna and Caleb. They broke up years ago, after some lies. She’s now back in Highland Falls recovering from the injuries she received courtesy of her ex-husband. She’s doubting her job, as a marriage therapist. She can’t believe she didn’t see the signs she’d be getting divorced. Caleb is still in town, but he’s married to a fellow doctor. They’re keeping secrets from the town though. What might these secrets be? No spoilers, so grab your copy and see what happens.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Debbie Mason has written another stellar second chance romance full of twists and turns and unexpected surprises along the way. At Home on Marigold Lane also has a few firecrackers thrown in for good measure. While there are pieces are are a bit outlandish this doesn't bother me while reading a romance novel. I am not reading expecting hyper realism.
Ms Mason has created a world with some unique and amazing characters, and she has created a beautiful world at that. The world she has created started well before this novel but extends into this novel and is definitely necessary to have the background in order to smoothly transition into At Home on Marigold Lane.
Dr Cal Scott and Dr Raine Johnson Scott have moved back to their hometown and petitioned the town of Highland Falls to build a trauma 1 hospital center after a series of health issues over the years and the growth of their and surrounding communities. Though the doctors are separated and have been so for over a year they are hiding this fact in hopes that it helps the centers approval.
Bri Macleod has been living at her families Inn since her accident trying to recover in peace and also avoiding her ex fiance Cal Scott. She agrees to move out so that her sister will go on her long awaited honeymoon. And she ends up being moved into a home with none other than her ex best.friend and Cals sister Em. With all of these things, shenanigans ensue.
But who finds love with whom and does the town get a casino or a trauma center?
At Home on Marigold Lane was another great addition to this series. I loved returning to Highland Falls and enjoyed the second chance romance between Bri and Cal. I look forward to the next book in this series and hope Emma and Josh get their own story.
I want to sit and read a book on the front porch of this house featured in the cover. This book is exactly what I needed today. I needed a happy ending, but the author makes the reader work for it.
Bri is still struggling to piece her life back together after severe setbacks. She has an over anxious, hovering sister, and her old flame who is looking out for her. Plus her new roommate is her ex best friend. Throw a difficult mother and paternal issues in the mix and it’s enough to call in the counselors.
I really, really like this series. The characters are so relatable and the small town atmosphere is simultaneously appealing but yet replete with nosy neighbors and underhanded dealings.
Take a trip to Highland Falls!
Thank you NetGalley and Forever Publishing for the book At Home on Marigold Lane. This is my personal review.
This is book five in the Highland Falls series by Debbie Mason.
This book is filled with so much that a few times I had to stop and ponder why things were happening the way they were. It had a lot of not telling what needed to be said and being upfront with everyone.
I enjoyed the book a lot but I was frustrated by so many people not stepping up and saying what they want to say and for me it made the book a little slow.
I have read all of Debbie Mason's books and really enjoyed them. That being said I don't know what happened with this book. It is just so frustrating. I literally wanted to smack everyone in this book upside the head. All the characters were written like they were angsty teens, not professional adults! Everyone was creating lies that were harming people, and then just layering more lies on top of them. Half of the people in the book - I would never want to associate with. I just really do not know where else to go with this. There were so many issues that could have been resolved if the characters in the book would just talk to one another.
Received as an ARC from Netgalley.
