A Psalm for Every Season" by Arnold R. Fleagle offers an intriguing premise: a devotional journey through the Psalms. For an active Christian who frequently delves into devotional literature, the book may initially seem promising. However, it falls short of being truly engaging. While the text is well-researched and offers some insightful moments, it lacks the emotional resonance and depth often sought in devotional readings. The prose is competent but doesn't captivate, making it a somewhat laborious read. In summary, although "A Psalm for Every Season" is not without merit, it may not resonate deeply with those who are well-versed in devotional literature.
A Psalm For Every Season is an inspirational devotional type book. The author has chosen 30 Psalms that address various needs in a person’s life. The author provides an explanation of the Psalm and expounds on how it can be applicable to the readers’ life needs. A nice feature after each short summary is a “compelling thought” whereby the author asks the reader a question relating to how the Psalm could be meaningful and pertinent in their life. The section concludes with a “comforting prayer” which guides the reader referencing the specific Psalm.
This is an excellent introduction to the Psalms. It is not overwhelming at all and the author provides excellent commentary/ comments. It is useful for anyone seeking better understanding of aligning one’s life with God’s ways, using the particular Psalm to illustrate spiritual principles.
A Psalm for Every Season by Arnold R Fleagle is a good devotional that takes you on a journey through 30 of the Psalms.. I liked the perspective Mr. Fleagle brought to the Psalms he chose and took notes. I used A Psalm for Every Season as part of my devotion time and learned a lot. Thank you to NetGaley for the opportunity to read this book. My review is also on Goodreads.

The book is well-structured, with each chapter focusing on a different season of your life, and offers practical guidance on how to use the Psalms for personal reflection and worship.
What sets this book apart is its emphasis on the use of the Psalms in the different phases of our lives. Fleagle highlights how each season of our life offers a unique perspective on the human experience, and how the Psalms can help us connect with these different emotions and experiences. The book's clear structure and insightful reflections make it a valuable resource especially for individuals looking to explore the Psalms and connect with their own spirituality.
Really enjoyed this. Insightful and gave me a focus to work through the Psalms. Sometimes working through from Psalm 1 to the end is not the way to go and this provided me with a more appropriate path. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the arc.
I love the book of Psalms in the Bible and it was a pleasure to read this book that delves more deeply into the passages. Obviously well-researched and well-written, to get the most out of the book the reader needs to really study the writing. There's a lot of depth to this book and it's well worth the time spent reading it.
A Psalm for Every Season is not a light little devotional, but not too heavy either. I think it strikes the right balance between the two. There are thirty Psalms chosen that are placed in order. Each day starts with the specific psalm, the title of the focus, followed by the scripture it's referencing, the devotional aspect that goes more into detail, a compelling thought, followed by a comforting prayer. The scripture used varies from different translations, which is a nice surprise, and the devotional isn't light fluff to make you feel good, but deeper to really get you thinking about the various seasons you could be in to give you a great perspective of encouragement and/or hope. Very well done!

I am reviewing a copy of A Psalm For Every Season through Chosen and Netgalley:
Both the men and women of the Bible turned to the Psalms for inspiration through the greatest tragedies in their lives as well as through the greatest triumphs.
Millenniums later we still turn to the same Psalms when we seek comfort and wisdom.
Dr. Arnold Fleagle explores 30 poignant passages in the Psalms, with depth and insight. In A Psalm for every season s 30 poignant passages in the Psalms, showing how their unchanging truths address virtually every facet of the human experience. Complete with a takeaway thought and prayer, each entry in this beautiful devotional comes to life through captivating artwork from renowned calligrapher Timothy Botts.
Whether or not you are on the mountaintop of praise and celebration or walking through the dark valley of grief and desperation, this journey through the Psalms offers encouragement and hope for every season of your life.
I give A Psalm for Every Season five out of five stars!
Psalms can be a conduit into a place of worship, in our hearts and minds, and this 30 day devotional highlights a selection of key Psalms that can be used to guide us through the highs and lows of daily life. Our response to both extremes needs to be similar ... to bring it before God in worship.
Each day you read this, you are being led by a man who has clearly walked through the Psalms and writes about them with a heartfelt passion.
Each Psalm selected is accompanied by a short commentary that highlights particular points of note. It could be read each day for 30 days, or even perhaps one a week for six months or so, as there is plenty of content to ponder. If read each day, it will certainly help to point you in the right direction every morning. Each commentary is followed by a short but profound prayer to round off each chapter, that brings the focus back to where it needs to be.
Working through the book you gain an understanding of the authors of the Psalms and their circumstances, noting that their responses can help us to respond to our situations.
The commentaries are well written, often poetic in their style, doing full justice to the Psalms that are being studied. I was frequently reminded of the real depth that there is in the Psalms, how much there is that can help you to reach deeply into the word of God, time and time again. Many fundamental Christian truths are spoken through the text, that can help to build your faith each day and encourage you to dive deeper into your relationship with Jesus.
It is a great, uplifting resource that leads the reader into a deeper place of worship.
A thought-provoking look at the Psalms. Arnold Fleagle delivers 30 devotions centered on Psalms. He offers a reflection on the passage and a closing prayer. I believe this will be a good choice for someone who is looking for a bit more than the normal quick daily devotion.
Thank you NetGalley, Chosen Books and Arnold Fleagle for the ARC of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Inspirational
Slightly longer reading for each of the psalms then I expected, I thought it was the type of thing to quickly read on a morning, but it is more indepth the I realised.
Still a good book.
The is a very inspirational book that provides a Psalm for 30 days. These Psalms can be used in conjunction with a fast or very enjoyable reading to start your day. Arnold Fleagle not only provides a 30 Day reading of Psalms for whatever season one maybe going through, he also provides a compelling thought, i.e. Compelling Thought - The answer to the question, “Do I believe in God?” also answers the question, “What is the IQ of my heart". In addition to the daily Psalm and compelling thought, the author provides an appropriate prayer.
Highly recommend this book as a very good reference for anyone's library or as a gift.
Unfortunately did not finish this, I misunderstood the format the book would be in, I thought it would be 1 psalm each day (for example 1 per page as written in the bible) but found this very tedious and too in depth for my preference. I am sure this is great for others but not for me. The cover and description makes it seem that the book will be in a simpler format allowing the reader to reflect on a selected psalm each day.
This is a book to dip in and out of. The psalms are presented in a new and vibrant style that bring fresh e elation and understanding.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read in exchange for a review.
A beautiful little book ,either to read sequentially or to dip in and out of. There are beautiful psalms to comfort, inspire or offer praise . Very well thought out.
I was drawn to the book by the stunning cover. 10/10 on that design!
Formatting issues from the epub of this title stopped me from enjoying this more. The layout was choppy, distracting from what was on the page.
I was educated in the same field of Christian thought that Dr. Fleagle served on the board for, Christian Missionary Alliance; it was easy to see a lot of the same thought patterns and teaching references in his work. This book is a solid, but uninspired, exploration of the Psalms. There is nothing new or incredibly thought-provoking here. It is clear that work, time and effort went into this, but that didn't translate into something that I will want to gift to friends or discuss in-depth with my faith circle. Fairly formulaic, which is what some readers of this genre will like, but it didn't push me to examine my heart, my spiritual formation, or my relationship with Pslams in any new way.
Each day of this devotional includes verses from a scriptural psalm, the devotional themes, compelling thoughts and ends with a comforting prayer. Fleagle gives an educated and doctrinally sound perspective on the psalms chosen for this devotional. God’s attributes, His wisdom and plan, and His desire to be in relationship with us are only a few of the topics Fleagle shares.
Succinct yet deeply researched and contemplative, each of the 30 devotions begin with a very truncated introduction to the specific scriptural psalm, sharing several key verses. It is beneficial to have a copy of the Bible present because the author goes on to outline the message in other verses of the psalm. Each devotional takes between 5-15 minutes, depending upon the reader. This devotional is worth the time spent completing it and is one that the reader would enjoy revisiting over and over again.
Here are a couple of short quotes from the book, among many others, to encourage us to spend time in the Word each day:
“...a heart saturated with the Word is less likely to stumble and fall short of God’s standard.”
“A deep appreciation for God’s Word is not something you schedule for retirement or the dismal days of a terminal illness. Grasp the joy of the Word that daily brings festive faith and often convicting challenge to your doorstep.”
“...the Psalms intersect with all the nuances of our lives, they are applicable and relevant and serve as guideposts for our pathways.”
I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review.
What a heart warming read. I love psalms and it was so great to turn to the appropriate section to read something applicable. I think this would be a great gift for loved ones.
I have enjoyed this diary of the Psalms in the last 30 days. I particularly enjoyed considering the questions posed at the end of each chapter. The daily prayers were encouraging. The commentary was in its comments and references very American and on a few occasions my own thoughts were a little difference.
Even so, I would recommend this as a personal retreat into the Pslams.
I wanted to like this book but I did not like the tone the author used towards those people who do not have faith. This made it hard for me to engage with the text. I see Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
