I Have to Go provided more than just a funny student for children and parents alike. The book features high frequency words at the beginning and provides an easy way to identify characters which is helpful for early readers and teachers. The book address capital letters and nouns. The book looks at the "g" sound and the letter g is highlighted in the text. At the end of the book, there are great activities for retelling the story with pictures, what you need to do before you leave the house, a spot the differences activity and tips for reading for caregivers. Recommended for grades kindergarten through 2nd grade.
This is an Earlier Children's Reader that I read with my kids. I found this book so cute because one of my kids does this every time he gets into the car. My kids took turns reading pages with me, and they had no problems reading the words in this book. They also found this book to be funny and cute. I really think this book is great for small kids. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Annick Press) or author (Robert Munsch) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
Princess Fuzzypants here: When my brother was a little kid, this was one of his very favourite bedtime stories. He loved it and so did Momma. She said any parent would love it. Every kid, at some time or another, does what Andrew does. And that means when the adults ask if he wants to go, he says no but once everything is set, he yells- I have to go pee!
I think it is a brilliant idea to adapt these well loved books into a new format wherein the parents can assist the child in learning to read through the various aids that are included. It takes a wonderful bit of childhood and takes it one step beyond. Five purrs and two paws up.
I Have to Go is a silly story that centers around young children's favourite source of humour - the bathroom. The funny tale features easy to read words and amusing illustrations. This is a simpler version of the story we all know and love. Some word changes from the original version include more action words like zip, snap and buckle. While reading it to my six year old, he was laughing while asking, "why would they choose THAT snowsuit!?! That's six steps." At the end of the book, there are activities to further explore the story and build literacy skills with your child.
As a parent to a new reader, I appreciated the Getting Ready for Reading Tips. This book would be an excellent addition to a home library or classroom.
Thank you to NetGalley and Annick Press Ltd for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The potty humor in this feel dated. But for parents who do not like Captain Underpants, or other underwear books, this one might work better. I still hate the Munsch Reader format.

A great adaptation of Munsch's longer works. This early reader is clearly constructed to provide an enriching experience for readers, with extra pages about word and letter sounds, to help with comprehension of the story, and extension. Probably will most find it's home in a school or one on one with parents.
I must begin by being honest - I am a huge fan of Munsch! This version of the book is simple yet does not loose the overall feel of the story! I also really liked how at the end of the book it gives you suggestions and asks you questions to help make the book more interactive and get the reader thinking about the story. It’s nice to see a book that helps early readers be interested and engaged with what they are reading. I would recommend this book!

In my early teaching years, I was introduced to Robert Munsch books by a fellow teacher. I fell in love with the humorous stories and the fun illustrations. Seeing that there were early reader versions coming out made me excited to see how they were structured. As with the original version, I Have to Go! Early Reader is silly and entertaining. It is sure to make children laugh. I was pleased to see that there are additions to this version for before and after reading. There is an introduction to the characters in the story and the high-frequency words that are in the book. There is also a short lesson on phonics (letter 'g'), nouns, and the use of words in all capital letters. The letter 'g' is in green throughout the text, drawing attention to how it is used in words. At the end of the book are a spot the differences activity, pictures to use for a retelling activity, and some writing prompts to encourage children to think about things they need to do before they leave the house. Then, it finishes up with some tips for getting ready to read and ways to make reading more fun. As a teacher, I enjoyed this new version and I know that my students will too.
I was really excited when I saw that this book was being published. Robert Munsch is a beloved author from the U.S. and Canada who inspired the love of reading in so many children and adults for generations. This book combines the classic story and illustrations that readers know and love with the strategies teachers and parents want to teach their young readers readily available at the beginning and end of the book.
Leveled books are a great tool for young readers but also have a bad rap and history of being extremely dull. This book breaks that mold because it features the same story kids love but is written in an accessible font, and includes pre and post reading activities. Robert Munsch books are great for kids to begin with. They offer repetitive text, are fun to read and listen to and are generally written at about a grade 2 level. The adjustments to this book make it even more accessible and in my opinion are the best of both worlds! As a grade 3 teacher (who is currently doing a Robert Munsch unit in class at the time of this review) I would absolutely like to see this book in my classroom library, especially for home reading or guided reading purposes. Children love these books and they gravitate towards them in grades k-4. I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the 3-9 age range, as well as slightly older students who typically struggle with reading or dislike reading or are learning to read in English, as I think this book would be perfect to support them while still being something that is enjoyable to read.
Thanks SO much to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. I can't wait to order copies for my classroom next fall!
As part of their ‘Early Reader’ re-release, some of the classic works of the beloved Robert Munsch have been adapted to include a guide that is placed to help a young reader explore sounds, consonants, character voices & plot comprehension.
As much as I love Munsch’s stories since having been introduced to them, this particular book was never very much a favourite of mine. I remember the distinct talks & ‘last calls’ we had growing up to ‘go’ before we all left the house. I can’t say there was ever a moment for me, that I took that lightly.
However, I recognize that this story will be wonderfully cheery & helpful to many young children who may not find it important to ‘go’ before being zipped up snug in their layered snowsuits or sat buckled upright in the car. For those children, this story might seem funny & relatable & quirky. I am glad to know that this book will & has been finding itself in the hands of those who need the reminder that being stuck needing to go to the bathroom when you’ve no opportunity to do so, is a rather unfortunate predicament to be in.

I've just read a whole bunch of Robert Munsch easy readers in a row and I just don't even know what to say anymore except that he is hilarous. These books are killing me. I'm years old and I'm sitting in a room reading these aloud to my 68 year old mother and we are both getting the giggles. My little kids are never going to stop repeating the lines from these books. And I don't think I'll even mind.
