2.5 Stars from me.
Harper is a struggling artist who ran away from her abusive father at the age of 16.
There are murders of young women that look almost exactly like Harper, and she fears for her own life.
She suspects the detective that she is helping, her own boyfriend, her childhood friend and her best friend's boyfriend.... but who is responsible for the killing?
To start off with, most of this book was totally unbelievable. A struggling artist who can barely scrape together her rent, who splashes out on coffee and alcohol?
I wasn't really mad on any of the characters, I felt they all lacked depth and personality.
It was a long read for me as I kept losing focus on the story, it just did not grab me.
As for the ending? I was left with more questions than answers, it was frustrating.
To be honest, I did not like the book at all. I finished it because I had to.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
3.5 stars. This book read very well and I was hooked right from the start, but at the end, I felt I had more questions than answers, not to mention that a lot of the plot seemed rather unrealistic. The necessary suspension of disbelief aside, it was a good read and I would be interested in reading more from this author in the future. While I was often very frustrated with the protagonist, Harper, I was still rooting for her throughout the entire book.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was an interesting but ultimately unsatisfying read. The setup was intriguing but I felt that the actual story was slow and confusing in parts. I also found the main character's decision making suspect in certain parts of the story. The final twist was decent but it also left some questions unanswered. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
Phew! This book was such a fast, mind-f*ck of an interesting read that focuses on how trauma can really mess with perception. The writing is incredibly tight; Grawl's pacing is relentless. The entire impact of this book left me the good kind of frustrated, really grounding the point of view in reality. And the realism here made it all the more creepy! I would've ripped through this book faster if some of the scenes hadn't been so friggin' scary (and I was less of a wimp.) Elle Grawl is a stellar writer, with a really unique, smart take on the psychological thriller genre.
One of Those Faces is a raw and riveting a very clever ride!
I absolutely flew through this book.
Elle Grawl writes very sharply, in a way that will keep you awake at night turning the pages.
This story intrigued me when I read the plot summary, and it didn't disappoint.
The plot is fast-paced and engaging. Had me wanting to race through it to see how this story played out.
The characters are realistic, and very interesting.
Such a great book!
This has all the ingredients for a great suspense read.

The main character is an insomniac who finds herself in the middle of murders of people who look suspiciously like her

Brilliant.
Years after escaping her abusive childhood, Harper Mallen has only ever known sleepless nights—or terrifying nightmares. She’s struggling to survive as an artist in a trendy Chicago neighborhood, getting by on freelance gigs, when she’s suddenly confronted with the worst fears from her past.
A young woman is killed outside Harper’s apartment—a woman who chillingly resembles her. As Harper searches for information about the victim, she discovers unsettling links to two other murders. Upon discovering another doppelgänger, Harper realizes her life is not the only one hanging in the balance. As her obsession and paranoia deepen, everyone is a suspect: the handsome stranger in the café, customers at the painting studio, even the ghosts from her past. The closer she comes to unraveling the truth behind the murders, the more Harper realizes there is no one she can trust—not even herself.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for giving me an advance copy.
The story is tense and thrilling and keeps you turning the pages until the end. Recommended! Gift yourself a copy, because you'll probably read the whole thing in one sitting. An author to keep an eye on.
One of Those Faces
A Novel
by Elle Grawl
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy of this novel.
From debut author, Elle Grawl comes a psychological thriller about an insomniac artist who discovers a shocking truth about a recent spate of murders in her city: the victims all look just like her. Wow, she writes like a pro for a debut writer. It was a great read and I enjoyed the wild ride.
This was a quick read and was well written in a lot of ways, but it was also frustrating. This is one of those books that leaves you with more questions than answers. There are so many things that didn't make sense and were never resolved. It's an interesting premise but frequently very confusing, mostly intentionally. The implausibility was also off the charts on multiple counts. It's an interesting debut but it might be better as a movie than it was as a book. And I really wish so many things were not just left unanswered.
I read a digital ARC of this book via Net Galley.
Whoa! What a ride. It was very fast-paced. The writing style kept me hooked and I didn't find myself losing any interest. I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters and how real the story felt. The author did a great job painting the setting, so it was easy for me to visualize the scene played out before me. I recommend giving this one a chance!
I had no idea where this book was going basically the entire time and because of that it 100% hooked me! There are moments where it slows down but I promise this one is worth the read! The ending leaves you with so many questions, which I usually hate, but it worked so well with this one!
This was a suspenseful, binge read for me. Harper Mallen, the titular character, presented as a deeply wounded, troubled soul; a victim of emotional abuse at the hands of the person who was supposed to love her best- her own father. As the cast of dubious, though predictable, characters piled up, mysterious coffee bar guy, not so best friend, creepy landlord and a seemingly endless supply of lookalikes, the plot became increasingly improbable and difficult to keep track of. Frustratingly, her constant self-sabotaging decisions made me less and less Team Harper as the story continued, yet onward I read into the night. So, my stars are really for the binge factor with a minus of two for the ending. Like many novels it just…ended…as if the author had written herself into a corner with nowhere else to go.. I eagerly flipped the page, thinking after hurtling me along that this abrupt stop couldn’t possibly be the ending, but as they say, that’s all she wrote.
One of those books I’m not sure how to review. Harper Mallen was abused as a child and is struggling to make it as an artist in Chicago and to overcome her nightmares. She becomes terrified when women who look exactly like her begin to be murdered and she doesn’t know who to trust. Debuted as a physiological thriller I was a bit disappointed. For me the story focused too much on Harper and the interactions with her friends and lovers, drugs and alcohol

I LOVED this book. I finished it within a day. The plot was engaging and the characters were well thought out. From the first page I was hooked. I appreciated how Harper’s past came out gradually through the book instead of a info dump during one scene. The ending seems to be incomplete which is why I took away a star. I don’t know if there will be a sequel but with the way it ended I’m hoping it does.
I'm not too sure about this one?! I did enjoy reading this book, but I kind of felt lost at times?! This book had the usual, it had suspense, intrigue, murder and mystery! Like I said it was a decent read, but just ok for me! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

This book hooked me fast, I chewed through it in two days. It was creepy and unsettling in all the right places and I loved every minute of it. Harper was a hot mess and I loved her for it, I really liked reading her character. Through all the twists and turns, I was second guessing everyone. Who’s the bad guy here?! This book was beautifully written, my only complaint was the ending felt rushed and could’ve been elaborated on a bit more in my opinion. I have a couple of questions left unanswered, but I enjoyed the ride!

This book was haunting and captivating from the very beginning and I really, really enjoyed it very much!

Incredible thriller, fast paced and entertaining. You’ll want to see how it ends while not wanting it to end!
I love this incredible thriller. The plot was ingenious and I really like the characters as well. If you’re looking for a fast pace story that you can get swept into fairly quickly this is the book for you,
