Very amusing collection of cartoons regarding everything books - authors, editors, libraries, book stores, publishers, life, death, scoundrels, elves, ufos.
I've seen Gauld's work on postcards before, but having them compiled in a book is fantastic! Humorous and relatable, this collection makes for an excellent gift and conversation starter.
This was fun and witty, but I did find it to be somewhat repetitive. From the title, I was expecting more focus on librarians and libraries, not just literature/reading/writing as a whole.
Revenge of the Librarians is a collection of literary cartoons. The cartoonist, Tom Gauld, has a nice literary cartoon art style. And he has a talent for making amusing observations about writers and writing.
This collection is perfectly fine. The cartoons are quick and witty. The art is good. There is some repetition of theme that got a little much for me (Yes, authors tend to do anything other than write) but this book was a lovely way to pass an hour.
As both a librarian and a writer, this collection was right in my wheelhouse. I enjoyed it immensely and will be buying several copies for gifts in the near future. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance reading copy of this delightful book.
I liked this but I felt that far too many of the comics focused on the lockdown portion of the pandemic. This made it seem a bit stale and outdated, even a bit of a slog.
This could be subtitled “Reading and Writing Books in the Time of COVID.” Gauld is a bibliophile’s cartoonist whose work frequently appears in The Guardian and The New Scientist, and his latest collection will appeal to anyone who loves books. Now that I think about it, Gauld’s work reminds me a lot of Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series in terms of his clear love of books, riffs on the literary canon, and sheer silliness — but with Fforde’s zaniness turned down a few notches.
Reading the title, I expected these comics to be more geared towards libraries and librarians, but it was mostly comics about writing/literature. They were still very humorous pages that most true bibliophiles will enjoy. There are a lot of references to classic literature but at the same time, many references to current issues such as the lockdown of 2020, etc. I'm not sure I could recommend this to any of the patrons of my library but I do know of other librarians that may enjoy this.
Gauld's charming collection of comic strips explores books, literature, lockdown life, and, of course, librarians. Give it to everyone who loves books and clever jokes.
Holy cow, am I ever in the pocket for Tom Gauld. This book is an outstanding addition to his already wonderful oeuvre of witty, bookish comics. There are so many great jokes, and it's maybe the first book I've read where the COVID stuff hasn't made me cringe. Really funny and highly recommended!
Solid selection of comics on the world of books and publishing. To get some of the jokes, you do need to have passing familiarity with the publishing industry and/or authors. Solid round of jokes for book lovers and aspiring authors. It's the perfect type of book to keep on your coffee table for quick laughs when people are over.
Revenge of the Librarians is a quirky comic about books, librarians, and readers. Some of the strips I didn’t quite understand, but there were several that bought a chuckle. I always enjoy the comics showing how time has changed in regards to technology and reading.
Overall, a fun book for those who enjoy reading. A nice coffee book table for guest to flip though.
Thank you Netgalley and Drawn and Quarterly for the ARC. I think it will be a great addition to our library.
This book took me by surprise-in the best of ways! Smart, sarcastic, funny….if you are a lover of books you will love this graphic novel. Actually I am not sure if novel is the right term….it is a series of vignettes that address the frustrations of writers, the maddening communication with publishers, the passion of readers all in humorous small bites with charming, simple drawings. I laughed as so many of the drawings and could personally relate to all of them. This is an original book and would be a great gift to the book lover in your life!
Thanks to Net Galley for this ARC

I thought this was a fun read, for those that are in the industry. I can't see this as something that the average reader would pick up and get much out of. As a librarian I could laugh at the inside jokes and at least understand the ones I didn't get.
Returning to the same themes (writers procrastinating, writers meeting with their editors, etc., etc.) over and over gets a bit repetitive -- perhaps I would have enjoyed this more if I hadn't read it all in one sitting! I also thought there would be significantly more library-themed content, based on the title.
That said, there are a couple of genuine LOLs to be had, and I find the art style very charming. This is a comic I would definitely check in with regularly, even if it doesn't quite do the trick as a collection!
Many thanks to the creator, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
Not just for librarians, this delightful collection of comics is for any purveyor or lover of books.
Loved this book but then again I am already a fan. . I had sooo many laugh out loud moments and I loved all the reimagined book covers. Hilarious! Some books referenced I had not read so the jokes went over my head but nonetheless I could still enjoy those panes and get the jest of the joke. I can guarantee this will be a hit with book lovers. Next book suggestion? ‘Booksellers strike back’ lol?! Thanks for the approval because this was a book I was eagerly anticipating
I really loved Revenge of the Librarians and as a bookseller I think that i could sell many copies of this book. His humour is snarky without being too much, and it's just easy, smart fun. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a good laugh.
A collection of comics about librarians, writers, and writing that I really enjoyed because I am a librarian!
