This is a fun and funny book from two personalities who delight in digging up things I didn't need to know, but now I do. Great car trip audiobook!
Having never listened to the podcast, I was delighted it was so easy to jump into this book. The organization was great and their personalities just jumped right out at you. Having read this I now have to go listen to the podcast because I'm not ready to say goodbye to them! I also loved how they gave suggestions for local spot to help support local businesses!
True crime and hauntings? Yes please.
I love true crime and real life haunting stories. While that’s a morbid thing to enjoy, I find it interesting to learn about.
This is a light hearted compilation of both true crime and ghost stories in the form of a “road trip” with our authors. Each stop is elaborated on in the podcast hosted by the authors. It’s also narrated by the authors and I love that. It’s especially nice since they are podcasters and this makes this book have a more conversational style rather than your typical nonfiction style.
I was aware of many of these hauntings and true crime stories and I enjoyed the way that they were introduced and the flow from one story to another was nearly flawless.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Despite never having listened to their podcast, And That’s Why We Drink, I jumped right into this one because I really love true crime. And traveling. But mostly true crime. I really enjoyed how they touched on events that happened in each location and provided just enough information to pique your interest without becoming too long winded about each story. The excellent storytelling and humor definitely makes me want to check out their podcast as well.
SYNOPSIS
A Haunted Road Atlas is written and performed by Christine Schiefer and her co-author Em Schultz. There is one word that sums up this insanity; cleverly wrapped up in either the written work or the unabridged audiobook, and that word is – fun. Schiefer and Schultz have created a powerful diversion from everyday irrelevant concerns with their fantabulous journey across the entire Continental United States!
Now back to the review. The book is subdivided into individual geographic locations. The reader joins the trip mentally with Christine and Em, visiting haunted hotels, paranormal tours and strange and weird places. That’s not all; oh no! A Haunted Road Atlas also covers: notorious criminals, murders, mayhem, massacres, and con-men. All these are accompanied by fun facts and opinions. I both read and listened to their productions, and I highly recommend the audiobook version. The narrative is rapid delivered and the staccato humor just blew my socks off.
I’m so so so very thankful to have been given this audiobook to listen to! I have been a devoted And That’s Why We Drink listener for years and now!! They’ve given us a book!
I loved the audiobook, because I’ve devoured all the podcast episodes, and wanted more content. While I liked hearing them read it, there were some moments I didn’t think translated to audiobook very well (id: when they were talking about the pictures and maps listed).
However, listening to the audiobook just made me feel like I needed to buy the book anyway
This wasn't what I thought it would be. The title got me interested but I found the audiobook to be slow and not scary. Probably good for others just wasn't what I was looking for.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC copy of this audiobook which I received in exchange for an honest review.
This is a 4 star book for me, and it's mostly my fault it isn't a 5/5.
I am not a listener of And That's Why We Drink so Em and Christine were new to me, as was their sense of humor which came through in both the writing of this book and the narration of it. I very much enjoyed the back and forth style of reading that they offered in this audiobook which is interesting because I usually don't care for audiobooks with more than one narrator because in my experience it often feels disjointed.
Content-wise this book didn't offer me any hauntings I didn't already know about, but the true crime elements were largely new to me as I generally don't do too much delving into those stories. The travel information and city based fun facts were also fun and somewhat unexpected!
Overall this was a fun listen and I did enjoy the book. The only thing keeping it from being a 5/5 for me is the inside jokes which sometimes left me feeling like I missed something important. If I were a fan of the podcast and listened to it often enough to know all the jokes I'm sure I would have loved it!
That said, I'd recommend this to anyone who likes spooky stories, haunts and true crime regardless of whether you listen to And That's Why We Drink, so long as you don't mind maybe missing some jokes here and there!
Take a trip around the U.S. from wherever you are with this one of a kind atlas that shares true crime, spooky stories and must see places for each stop along the way. I hadn’t heard of the And That’s Why We Drink podcast, but the book is full of banter listeners new and old can enjoy.
Thank you to NetGalley for this audio ARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
As a true crime lover I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the two narraters going through destinations and talking about iconic cases that took place there. I really enjoyed getting to hear about several short stories through out the journey, some I was familiar with and others I'd just been introduced to through this audiobook. I liked the way the narraters told these stories, it was less like a novel and more like a chat amongst friends which I definitely preferred. If you love true crime you're going to like this for sure!
Not your typical road trip book. Instead of national parks and monuments this book takes you on a road trip to bizarre and strange places. This book might not be for everyone but if you like the unusual you will love this off the wall book.
A road trip through America of the creepy, and eerie. Fun, funny and historical. Perfect for horror and ghost story fans!
Such a fun book. It's filled with awesomely creepy and spooky destinations that may not make it on the map for other travel guides, but those who love hauntings will want to take note of.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book and thought it was great- perfect for a road trip!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
Fantastic! Love listening to E & C and this was a great listen during my recent road trip. Had all the same vibes I love from the podcast but in such a great travel setting.
I love true crime stories and the spooky vibes were an added bonus, A Haunted Road Atlas by Christine Schiefer and Em Schulz is narrated beautifully. It was only after I started listening to this audiobook that I realized that the narrators had a podcast too. Now, I will be checking out their podcast too.
Listening to the stories and especially the narration had me hooked from the beginning till end. I'd recommend this book to every reader who loves a spooky-true crime book.
Thanks NetGalley for granting my request! This was an amazing audiobook!
Fun! Love all the stories and adventure and history here. I never listened to the podcast, so I wasn't as interested in the personal anecdotes.
Okay YES. I need more. I absolutely loved this book full of anecdotes from their tour, the fun facts about the cities, the playful banter, and the stories! I don't know if I loved the ghost stories or the true crime stories more. My only complaint is that the Charlotte ghost story happened in Asheville and not in Charlotte but truly, it was still a grand old time listening to this one!!!
A Haunted Road Atlas listens like a podcast that you won't want to turn off. This audiobook brings the listener on a tour of the United States, sharing a paranormal/ haunting story and true crime story for cities all across the country. The authors Christine Schiefer and Em Schulz, make you feel like a friend along for the road trip and mix a pleasant amount of humor in with some truly horrific stories.
I received this audiobook as an ARC from NetGalley. I will admit that true crime and paranormal are not my typical genre of audiobooks, but felt intrigued by this one. Sure enough, I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this listen. I appreciated the standard approach to each site, to get a rhythm for what to expect as a listener and to have natural spots to stop between chapters. I think my only critique is that for some of the stories, I think I would've liked MORE rather than what felt like a summary and a referral to a more complete podcast.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I would definitely recommend this one for fans of the "This is Why We Drink" podcast, true crime, paranormal stories, or those brave enough to perhaps give a new genre a try! A strong 4 stars!
A Haunted Road Atlas: Sinister Stops, Dangerous Destinations, and True Crime Tales was written and narrated by Christine Schiefer and Em Schulz. It is currently scheduled for release on May 31 2022.
Pack up your Ouija board, wine bra, and squirt guns full of holy water, we’re going on a road trip! From the podcast And That’s Why We Drink, this is an interactive travel guide to the hosts’ favorite spooky and sinister sights. The world is a scary place, and that’s why we drink! Full of fun facts, travel tips, and beverage recs, this guide includes some of the country’s most notorious crime scenes, hauntings, and supernatural sightings. You’ll also find Christine and Em’s personal recommendations to the best local bars and ice cream parlors, oddity museums, curiosity shoppes, and more. Explore some of the most bizarre cases you’ve heard on the show, as well as exclusive new content from bayous, basements, and bars!
A Haunted Road Atlas is exactly what the title and blurb promise. The audio book offers a great listen, and the print version has the bonus of pictures, illustrations, the print list od recommendations and such. The audiobook version does offer these items as a PDF for those interested. I liked the tone and mood of the book. It offered interesting information while including fun facts and a great deal of snark and humor along the way. I like that they also encurage readers that might take thier own adventures to go about it with cation and respect. Many of the stories were ones I had heard before, but I did enjoy the way they told the stories and approched it. THe only thing that really bothered me is that they seem to be big fans of Zak Bagans and Ghost Adventures. I have watched many of the paranormal investigation shows, and his is one I could never enjoy. There is something about him that rubs me (and my husband to be completely honest) the wrong way. So the consistent mention of Zak and his show kind of took me out of the enjoyment and mood of the otherwise wonderful storytelling. Others will not have this problem, as it is a me problem, but it did effect my overall enjoyment. I liked the conversational style of the book, and think that must be a product of all the hard work they have put into their podcast and live shows. I think I will give the podcasts a go and enjoy their work even longer.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
***AUDIO BOOK VERSION***
A Haunted Road Atlas is a spine tingling true crime and paranormal story collection told by two friends who run a podcast. I enjoyed the discussions that took place in this book and will definitely be checking out their podcast. The tales told are told from different periods of time and the places, crimes, hauntings and destinations are discussed in detail. They also talk about hauntings and strange happenings that have been reported to have taken place at some of the sites and destinations the crimes had took place in. This added a creepy and fun element to the audio book. This was a fun listen and I really want to see the illustrations in a physical copy ASAP.
