Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six follows three couples who are renting a luxury cabin in the middle of nowhere. Hannah and her husband, Hannah's brother and his wife, and Hannah's best friend and her new boyfriend are the six staying at the cabin but we also get multiple other perspectives that all help to frame the story. As the story interweaves between all the different characters and different timelines it all culminates in what happens at the cabin.

Unger did a great job creating an atmospheric and unsettling setting. Beyond the cabin having a questionable background and host there is also a horrible storm that comes through that leaves them even more isolated. I also enjoyed all the different characters because I just wanted to keep reading to see how they were all connected. And it was not the story I thought we were getting when the pieces started coming together. But it was really interesting and thought provoking in a few different ways that I don't want to spoil here. I also liked the pacing of the story because we never seemed to spend too long in one place. Especially since there are so many characters and some of the story is told in the past so I had some parts that I liked more than others.

While I enjoyed how the characters helped to tell the whole story and they kept me engaged I did find the majority of them unlikeable. Which kind of defeats the purpose of a murder mystery because I didn't really care who lived or died. I also thought that one of the side stories was pointless because while it did give more understanding to the motivations I ultimately thought it wasn't necessary.

If you enjoy multi perspective thrillers then I think this was a fun one. I do recommend you take the audiobook route though because I think the narrator also played a part in my enjoyment of this story.

There are numerous characters and multiple points of view to keep track of, some of which are superfluous. The timeline also alternates between the past and present. All of the characters are cliches and lack depth.

Unger is becoming one of those thriller authors that I enjoy picking up. Her writing is engaging and her characters are fairly well written even if a little two-dimensional for my taste. The premise here was interesting and I felt like the lead up to the big reveal was really well done but I didn't see where it was going. The ending felt a little bit rushed and a little too concerned with tying up all of the loose ends. I did greatly enjoy it and I couldn't put it down. Three and a half Stars

Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a slow-paced, suspenseful title. The story is slightly darker than I expected, but that did not hinder my reading experience. If you enjoy reading books with multiple POVs and morally gray characters, you should give Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six a go!

A fun mystery/thriller, with some exciting elements. I enjoyed the different POV and plot twists as the story continued, and would find this to be a fun vacation read.

**Review: Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger**

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 out of 5 stars)

*Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six* by Lisa Unger is a suspenseful thriller that draws readers into a world of secrets, lies, and unexpected twists. Set against the backdrop of a remote and eerie cabin, the novel promises an intriguing and atmospheric read, though it doesn't quite live up to its full potential.

The story follows [brief description of the main characters], who decide to take a getaway trip to a secluded cabin. As the plot unfolds, tensions rise and hidden secrets come to light, creating a web of mystery that keeps readers guessing. Unger excels at creating a creepy, isolated setting that enhances the suspense and sense of unease throughout the book.

One of the strengths of *Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six* is its well-drawn characters. Each character brings their own baggage and secrets, making their interactions and conflicts engaging. Unger's writing style is descriptive and immersive, effectively pulling readers into the chilling atmosphere of the cabin and the unfolding drama.

However, the novel does have its drawbacks. The pacing can be uneven, with some parts of the story dragging on while others feel rushed. Certain plot twists and revelations, although surprising, can come across as far-fetched or implausible, which might detract from the overall suspense and believability of the narrative.

Additionally, while the setup is intriguing, the payoff may not satisfy all readers. Some may find the resolution lacking in depth or emotional impact, leaving lingering questions or a sense of missed opportunity.

In summary, *Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six* by Lisa Unger earns a solid three stars. It’s a decent thriller with a captivating premise and a suitably eerie atmosphere, but it falls short in terms of pacing and plot execution. For fans of suspenseful stories set in isolated locations, this book offers an enjoyable, if not entirely memorable, reading experience.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

The Gist

Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger falls short of its potential, delivering a unremarkable thriller experience. Despite the promise of a gripping premise, the execution of the novel fails to captivate readers, leaving them feeling underwhelmed and disappointed.

The Details

The story follows a group of friends who embark on a weekend getaway to a secluded cabin in the woods, hoping to escape their troubles and reconnect with one another. However, their idyllic retreat takes a sinister turn when they discover a series of dark secrets. As tensions rise and paranoia sets in, the friends are forced to confront their own demons.

One of the novel's major shortcomings is its reliance on tired and clichéd tropes. From the creepy cabin in the woods to the group of friends with dark secrets, the story feels like a rehash of familiar thriller conventions, offering little in the way of originality or innovation. As a result, the plot feels predictable and formulaic, failing to surprise or intrigue readers in any meaningful way.

Additionally, the characters in Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six are thinly drawn and lacking in depth. Despite their troubled pasts and complicated relationships, they never fully come to life on the page, leaving readers feeling disconnected and uninvested in their fates. As the story unfolds, their actions and motivations feel forced and contrived, making it difficult for readers to empathize with their struggles or root for their success.

Also, this constant “look what we can afford” commentary got old and annoying very quickly.

The Verdict

Overall, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a forgettable and uninspired thriller that fails to leave a lasting impression. With its tired tropes, dumb characters, and uneven pacing, Lisa Unger's novel falls short of delivering the suspense and excitement readers expect from the genre.

This book had a lot going on from the beginning. Every chapter left me a little more intrigued. There were a few things I didn't see coming - at all! I appreciate when a book gives me a little shock value. Interesting storyline filled with a lot of questions and some twists and turns that completely had me guessing! Overall it kept me entertained.

This book was long with a lot of weird characters and plot twists that went nowhere. There were too many characters and points of view. The storyline is that six people (three couples) go on this vacation ? retreat ? at some weird cabin in the middle of nowhere that has no online reviews. Everyone just seems to go along with it. But wait, that's not even the weird part.

There's someone that is looking to take revenge on one of our characters but we don't know why or where this person fits in. Eventually it all makes sense (ish). It was just... a lot. A lot of charaters, a lot of weird storylines, and a lot of things that seemed really just weird.

This one will have you rethinking doing a DNA / genealogy test and finding out where you come from.
When Hannah's brother Mako rents an over the top cabin in the middle of nowhere how can something not go wrong. Mako, his wife, his sister and her husband and his high school girlfriend and sometimes hookup and her new boyfriend are all supposed to enjoy the off the path retreat but from the beginning things aren't right. The different characters and perspectives will have you wondering, and some may not be necessary, but in the end it all comes together. Always a fan of Lisa Unger.

I loved this book! It's well-written, enjoyable, and a great read. Unger did a great job of writing in a way that captures the readers attention, and makes you not want to put it down until you're finished! Lisa Unger will always be a top-notch suspense writer, and I love all the books I've read by her! I would highly recommend this book!!

This story was so messy and all over the place. The locked room mystery vibe is something I generally love, and this story didn’t do it for me at all. Boring plot, no real surprises, and unmemorable characters.

Great thriller - I will say that I can always rely on Lisa Unger for a good read, and this one doesn't disappoint.

This was a DNF book for me. I found that there were a lot of characters and the storyline was hard to follow. I was not invested enough to finish it.

Going into this psychological thriller with no idea what the story is about seems to have made this a more enjoyable read. At first you will be very confused by all the povs you get and how they will all fit together, but when this complex plot comes together it will al make sense! Things truly get going about 30% in; its explosive writing, fast paced (only letting up to let you catch up with the plot), on-the-edge-of-your-seat intrigue that will have you questioning who really is the monster in the story...

While the plot revolves around many different povs, it mainly follows three couples who go on vacation to a luxury cabin in the woods of Georgia. When one disappears, blood is found, and things turn ugly, truths are revealed and a murderer is out for blood...

Lisa Unger tells a story that will show sometimes DNA isn't everything and the family you build can have more value than the family you're biologically related to. Secrets have a way of coming out and will always have some kind of consequence. The choices you make can lead down dark paths...

If psychological thrillers are your thing, and you have not yet read this book, I would highly recommend going into this knowing that there is more to this than meets the eye...

Thank you to Netgalley for the review copy to read. The above review is my own opinion on the story!

I DNF’d this book about 40% through. I typically enjoy this author’s books, but it was not for me. I enjoyed the writing style but I was not connecting with the plot. I am still really excited to see what this author writes in the future!

This was on okay books. Multiple POVs and none of the characters were very like able. There was just too much unnecessary content for this book that didn’t need to be there.

In Lisa Unger's latest, the author gives her readers a locked-room mystery with all the right elements. You have a storm coming, a dark history of the location, and characters that jump off the page. SECLUDED CABIN SLEEPS SIX is another example of why readers keep coming back to Unger's dark, twisty, and bingable books.

I LOVE all things Lisa Unger and this book did not disappoint! Her way of telling a story and keeping me, the reader on edge, wanting to come back for more, is what I love about this author. If you are new to Lisa's work, please do yourself a favor and gather up all of her past works of art and hunger down and enjoy. Even if you pick up an audiobook and listen as you clean the house, go for a walk......you will have found yourself another "auto buy author" to add to your list!
