I have read Lisa Unger a long time ago and I am happy that NetGalley gave me the chance to read her newest novel.
I have to admit I was a little confused with all the characters and it seemed also another plot line. As the book progressed I got to know who was who and the reason for the other plot line. Needless to say everything came together perfectly.
Even if I was a little confused I still enjoyed this book very much and will read her again. As a matter of fact I think I am going to look up her other books, the ones I have not read.
Lisa Unger’s Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is an original “locked room” mystery with a unique twist! Truthfully, I wasn’t a fan of where the novel was going halfway through the book as the whole DNA angle isn’t something I normally care for. However, when it was revealed HOW it fits into the story, I suddenly became even more immersed in the book. What starts off at a slower pace soon turns into a sinister and faster paced novel with unexpected surprises. I loved the reveal, I enjoyed the characters even though a few were very unlikable and enjoyed how everything was wrapped up. This is the perfect suspense novel for those who like a “claustrophobic” feel to their books (the characters are essentially stranded during a hurricane).
I also want to take a second to mention the amazing cover! It’s not only PERFECT for the story but it’s downright gorgeous! Had I not been a fan of the authors work in the past I would have picked this one up solely based on the cover!

2.5 rounded up to 3. I did enjoy this. It was typical and yet different when it comes to a group of people in a locked room during a storm plot. I think Unger should have stuck to one storyline because the second one was not interesting at all. I could have lived with bits about the father, but it was taken to a point that was beyond who cares. I thought the writing was great, but again the plot could have been executed in a more exciting way. I normally enjoy Lisa Unger's books and this was no exception. It was a quick enjoyable read, but nothing groundbreaking.
Thank you so much to @netgalley and @harlequintradepublishing for this advanced reader's copy for an honest review.
Such a fascinating premise! I love how everything came together slowly but every page was gripping! The character development was phenomenal and the situations they found themselves in throughout the book made me squirm! Unger is always a sure bet and this one, her twentieth book, is by far her best!
This was a really fun thriller! Somehow, Unger found enough unique twists to not make this feel completely run of the mill. I did not guess the ending, and nowadays, that's a win! I also didn't roll my eyes, another win! This may not sound like a rave review, but for me, it is. There are so so many thrillers nowadays, and this is one I would actually recommend!
This turns into a locked room mystery, which I love. There are many twists and turns that kept me constantly guessing.
I loved the atmosphere, so, so good!
I also think Unger does a good job of keeping the plot moving and not overdoing the action or the characters’ motivations.
Highly recommend.
This book started off with such an intriguing plot- three couples alone in a secluded cabin. A peeping Tom. Something more sinister in the air. It was so atmospheric. I have to say that for the first half of the book I was riveted. Told in alternating timelines between past and present, I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next.
But then in the second half, the book got some grand ideas that were quite frankly, very unbelievable, and it started to lose me BIG TIME. The plot holes were gaping. Critical information was provided too late. Prior stories were misleading but not in a fun plot twist way. No characters were redeemable.
I rarely every say this but I would skip this one. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3 stars.
This book was good and creepy and very interesting. It really kept you guessing till the end. I loved how there was lots of twists and turns. I really enjoyed it and it took my no time to read it. The story flows pretty good and comes together in the end. It really keeps you on your toes and thinking. It was good. The writing was very good and I like the 2 story lines.
Thank you @netgalley and @harlequinbooks for giving the chance to read and review this book.
It was the title of the book and the blurb that made me itch to read this book. There's something about that title that just screams this is all going to get crazy and it does!
Our six cabin occupants are: Hannah and her husband Bruce, Hannah's brother Mako/Mikey/Mickey and his wife Liza and Hannah's friend Cricket (who also happens to have hooked up with Mako) and her new boyfriend Joshua. It does take a number of chapters to get this all straight in my mind, and there's another parallel story being told as well. So at the start, I wasn't quite sure what was going on, but things moved rather quickly and I liked that very much.
There's a weird vibe that starts right at the beginning of this book when DNA test kits are mysteriously found around the Christmas tree. It's a deliciously wicked and suspenseful feeling as they reluctantly head off to their vacation cabin six months later.
Once at the cabin, an incoming storm provides additional tension to the setting. Things really get crazy and serious. It wasn't until almost the end of the story that I put all the pieces together in my mind, and I just loved that I remained guessing for most of the story. I thought the author did an excellent job of telling this story, and the DNA aspect was refreshing and timely.
There's also a few red herrings thrown in for good measure and I did like how the motivations of the crime was revealed. I may have even held my breath in a few places, and I was very pleased with how everything turned out, even months later.
I really, really enjoyed this story and the characters, even though they weren't all likeable. There was a fabulous build up of tension that had me finishing this in just a couple of days, even though the beginning is a bit tough because of multiple points of view and not knowing the characters yet. This was one of those books that I read whenever I had a free minute because I needed to know what was going to happen to the six in the cabin.
I would be remiss in forgetting to mention Henry, who brings a certain redemption to this story that was perfectly placed. I think what I liked the most about this story was how it was told and seeing how all the pieces fit together at the end. It definitely has something to say about blood being thicker than water, and how family doesn't always mean blood relatives. I loved the ending.
So overall, this was a 5 star read for me this year. This book made my head happy with its complexity and themes. Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six will definitely be on my "favorites of 2022" list.
This novel was told from multiple points of view, with each character telling their own story. Some of the character's stories were easy to put together; others didn't make sense how they fit until the end of the book. There were many "reveals" or "twists" throughout however, none of them made my jaw drop. Nothing was really shocking. While interesting and well written, the plot line was a bit over the top. Also, the only characters at the cabin I found myself caring about were Hannah and Bruce, because of their daughter Gigi. Some of the other characters in the book were decent, but I felt indifferent about them.
This book was a quick read with short chapters. The alternating narrators also helped make the story move quickly and made me want to keep reading. This was the first book by this author that I've read and I am looking forward to reading more by her.

Fairly boiler plate secluded cabin mystery. Mostly a ,matter of waiting for the author to reveal the past than expderience it.
This book has a lot of characters and how they intertwine makes the story so interesting. I enjoyed this book a lot. The drama and mystery and how everyone connected. I love the different points of view and I would have never guessed it was going in this direction. I’m so glad that I got this book from NetGalley and was able to read it and give my opinion on it!
This isn’t super original, but great for fans of locked room thrillers. I found it to be pretty good until the ending, where I found it to be missing something. The plot and the characters were great, but I wish that the ending was more planned out to give it that bang that thrillers need!
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six comes out today!! She is a psychological thriller queen and this luxury cabin in the woods setting is perfect for a fall thriller!
Three couples (a brother, sister & best friend and their significant others) have a weekend planned at a cabin to get away from it all, but will their weekend turn into a nightmare?
This book almost had two stories being told simultaneously with their own sets of narrator and while I liked it because it kept you guessing and you were wondering how the DNA side will play out, it was hard to keep track of people at first. But I loved the creepy settings and the fact that everyone was unlikable. It was messy and complex at times but honestly that's how I like my thrillers!
Definitely recommend checking this out if you like locked door thrillers!
hmmm this was sounded so interesting but sadly I didn't like any of the characters which made me not care about the mystery at all.
I have heard of this author a lot in the past. Never picked up a book. This one sounded interesting so I gave it a try. A very interesting concept. - three couples go to a secluded cabin. There’s.a creepy owner of the cabin. Lots of secrets kept by all, some confusing employment all around/ what could go wrong. Honestly the back and forth in time and the multiple characters made this a did not finish. I found my self not really caring that happened:(
This has all the hallmarks of a fun thriller: a beautiful yet lonely location, a big storm on the horizon, a nervous new mom with a husband who’s up to something, a seemingly perfect wife with a secret, a creepy vacation rental owner, an obnoxious tech bro, a party girl with a mysterious new boyfriend, and family secrets galore!
The set up takes a lot of chapters, but there’s plenty of twists to keep readers guessing. The pace picks up once the weekend getaway gets underway. This is an entertaining and enjoyable thriller perfect for locked room mysteries and family drama fans.
Thank you to NetGalley, HTP Harper Collins, Park Row Books, and Harlequin Audio for the ALC, e-arc and print arc!
I enjoyed this locked-room thriller. I loved the atmospheric setting . There were so many POV and multiple timelines/storylines that I had to take notes as I read/listened to keep them all straight. (While the audio narration was great, I think this story would have really benefitted from multiple narrators for each POV). Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it and would recommend it. I flew through this audio/book - I was so curious how both storylines intersected. Everything felt wrapped up nicely in the end.
Congrats, Lisa Unger on number 20!!
If you enjoy locked-room mysteries and stories about flawed families with lots of secrets - this is the book for you!
Family comes in all shapes, sizes, and dimensions. A brother and sister along with their spouses and friends find what they believe will be a restful respite in a secluded resort.
Not surprisingly, it’s anything but restful. Reverberations haunt the group as their secrets are revealed, some more egregious and stark than others,
I liked all the intrigue, especially the DNA, sperm donor angle, which is endlessly fascinating.
I was kept on the edge of seat, ripping through the pages, wondering what new revelation would surface.
We are related by blood to family, but inclusion can cast a wide net for others to be considered family as well.
A true vacation gone wrong story. The story pulls you in quickly and keeps you guessing.Lisa is a talented and gifted author and always knows how to write a good mystery/thriller.
