Legend Press and to NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
This was a book I picked out on a whim. I have never read anything by this author before and saw that the book was available so I requested it.
This book had me hooked from the first chapter. I didn't know what was going on, and even though the author gave little clues through out, I still was unsure right up to the end. I loved reading this book.
This book was a great read for this time of year. Its spooky and keeps you guessing. I will definitely be recommending this one!
2.5 stars
I've read and enjoyed other books by Unger, so I had high hopes for this one. Sadly, it was lackluster for me. I enjoyed the alternating POV's and the DNA angle. However, I never really connected with any of the characters, particularly Mako, and overdetailing kept pulling me from the storyline. Perhaps a tighter edit could've helped that. I liked the setting, but some plot points were a bit too unbelievable. This one missed the mark, but I'm likely to check out future books.
Lisa under is one of my favorite authors and this book does not disappoint. In Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six, three couples go to a secluded cabin for the weekend. Going back and forth between the past and the present,we begin to learn secrets about each couple and eventually how they all fit together. If you like stories that slowly reveal details needed to solve the mystery, you will love this book!
There were two things that made me very excited to read Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six early: I've enjoyed the work of this author in the past and I LOVE a good locked room mystery. The isolated luxury cabin in the woods sounded like the perfect backdrop for this kind of story; combine that with the promise of a storm and lots of secrets and I fully expected to have a fantastic time with this book. Somehow though, I don't think this newest story exactly lived up to expectations for me. I'll try to explain below why I ended up having mixed thought instead...
First of all, I have to say that I still love the premise of this story, and the isolated cabin setting most definitely helped set the right atmosphere. There is nothing more ominous than having the main characters being trapped in the middle of nowhere with danger and secrets lurking around every corner and a storm on the way... It was probably one of the strongest aspects of this story, and it's a shame that the setting wasn't used to its fullest potential. Why? The setting, the location's creepy history, the hint at the paranormal, the storm; it could have been used to create so much more suspense and truly create that creepy almost horror vibe, something that would have elevated this plot to the next level for me. Instead, Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six ended up being surprisingly dull and repetitive until you reach the final 30% or so of the story.
One of the main issues I had with Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six has a lot to do with the fact that there are so many different characters and multiple POVs to juggle, and things can get quite confusing in the beginning. Especially since there seem to be two completely different storylines going on as well as flashbacks to the past, and you keep wondering what's the point of it all. Certain POVs and characters didn't even add something to the plot either, and they felt mostly like fillers and distracted from the rest of the story. And about the characters in general: basically, just about all of them are horrible, and especially in the present timeline. Every single one of the six people in that cabin has something to hide, and I started to hate them more and more as things were revealed... As a consequence, I couldn't really care less what happened to them and if they would make it to the next day alive. I don't mind flawed characters, but in this case they were too riddled with cliches and lacked dept.
I also wondered if you can really call Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six a locked room mystery at all, because you can basically guess the identity of the 'bad guys' straight away and you are never left wondering about anything. I kept hoping to find a big surprise twist that proved everything that I had deducted early on wrong, but sadly that never happened and the story was just too straight-forward for me. I also felt that Henry's POV in general was too far removed from the rest of the POVs, and while things are explained in the end it was just all too neat and convenient to be credible. The ending in general was quite underwhelming for me, as there were no big surprises or other reveals to redeem the story.
All in all Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six was a story with a lot of potential, but with an execution that was a bit underwhelming for me. It's not all bad and I'm definitely not giving up on her books, but I think this was my least favorite Lisa Unger title to date.
Thank you to Harlequin Trade Publishing for letting me read an early copy. This one publishes on November 8!
This book felt like a roller coaster to me. It started off a little cheesy but I kept going because I love Lisa Unger. Then once the setting was all set up it got pretty good. I nestled myself in for a spooky atmospheric read but I was let down because it wasn’t all that spooky and not at all atmospheric. The cabin was it’s own character and was my favorite one because it was actually more developed than the characters. I still enjoyed the read and devoured it pretty fast, I would recommend it to people looking for a lighter thriller. Have you read this one? I’d love to chat about it.
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is mystery/thriller set in the an secluded area that assists the storyline with its atmospheric and creepy plot. Three couple go to a remote cabin for a relaxing weekend away, all paid for by the brother of the mail character. As you can guess, it isn’t relaxing as they feel they are being watched.
There are several storyline that interweave themselves together except for one, which I think was put in as a read herring. Overall, I enjoyed the plot and Lisa Unger is an amazing storyteller. I did get confused a few times as there were quite a few things going on and it did get a bit long winded in a few areas but I enjoyed the mystery.
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six started out pretty strongly for me. There was an initial plot point that almost had me bail as it seemed very repetitive to other books I have read recently. I pushed past this and it turned out I was wrong about how that plot point would develop anyway. The first part of the book was good, and definitely kept me reading. The atmosphere was nice, and the pace moved along well.
Then, somewhere around the middle of the book, things started to change. Several characters are introduced who have no apparent connection to the original 6 in the cabin, and not all of these end up being necessary to the story at all. It got convoluted, and by the end there were so many revelations about every single character that it felt overdone and completely improbable.
It's too bad, because the writing is not bad and I liked some of the questions the author poses. It's just really over the top melodramatic.
This book started out so string, but midway through it becomes a little muddled. Too much time is spent trying yo make Henry and other side characters important. I wish it narrowed its scope down just a bit.
Lisa Unger books are not to be missed. Intriguing and suspenseful. This one did not disappoint. Very good character development. Looking forward to the next one.
6 people staying in a secluded cabin in the middle of nowhere, where danger lurks? Sounds like my cup of tea...in fiction only!
This is a fast-paced, suspenseful story about 3 couples who go to a secluded cabin to have a relaxing weekend vacation. They all need it after various stresses they’re all going through. Unfortunately, the relaxing time doesn’t last…as someone is watching them…waiting in the woods. Someone who wants to make sure they don’t have a good time.
Lisa Unger is back in the game after her last book left me feeling underwhelmed. The characters are interesting, there are some nice surprises, and the atmosphere is high! This is the perfect fall weekend read, under the covers or in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine.
Thank you to Park Row for a widget of the ARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Expected Publication Date: 11/8/22.
This is an atmospheric thriller, where the secluded cabin is almost it's own character -- and may have stronger character development than the actual people in the book, who even as they come to some realizations about themselves remain basically the same, or make one very different choice near the end to show that they have indeed been changed (not very believably). So while the characters are not terribly compelling, the way that they all mix, and wondering how it will all end, kept me going.
I struggled with this a little bit. Took a while to get into and I kept getting distracted. So it wasn’t my favorite of her books.
Synopsis: Three couples (a brother/sister and best friend plus significant others) rent a luxury cabin in the woods for the weekend. What they had hoped would be a glamorous weekend away quickly begins to spiral, as a deadly storm is brewing. With it comes a lot of questions-- how well does Hannah know her husband? Can she trust her best friend? Who is the new boyfriend joining them for the weekend? Someone also seems to be watching them, and big secrets are slowly revealed
Thoughts: This thriller has a somewhat convoluted, yet intriguing plot. It starts with the classic "locked in a remote cabin" premise, but it evolves into something greater that, although takes time to develop, was quite interesting. I liked the various POVs; however, one didn't really seem necessary/was underdeveloped. I had hoped for a bit more involvement with that character. Still, a solid thriller just in time for spooky season!
This was my first read by Lisa Unger and now I am looking forward to reading her other books. This is a creepy, locked room thriller that takes place in a cabin during a snowstorm. There are several plots happening throughout that all connect at the conclusion. Some twists I saw coming and others were unexpected. I will say that I found all of the characters pretty unlikeable but that added to the mystery for me. I think this is a great read and the setting will be perfect for upcoming winter nights.
Thanks to Lisa Unger, Harlequin Trade Publishing, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this title in exchange for my honest review.
Decently told mystery with a few extraneous threads and some very OTT moments towards the end. Overall worth reading.
Unger's books are hit or miss for me. This one fell mostly in between. There are some good surprises, and I loved the isolated "locked room" premise, however I felt like there were so many secrets held by the characters aimed at misdirection that the plot got a bit too muddled.
There are two storylines. One is of a group of six adults who are going for a weekend away to a remote home in the woods. Another is an exploration of the life of a person named Henry. The two storylines eventually come together, but the way it happened was surprising and one of the best reveals of the book. I really liked Henry's storyline and thought it was very well developed and I was so invested in him and finding out how he fit into everything.
There are some throwaway storylines/characters that go nowhere, and the fact that there are a large number of characters in the first place makes it frustrating at times to keep them all straight. This is a book that is best experienced on paper, I think the audiobook would be massively confusing. I also didn't care for the big "wrap up" at the end, because if you're paying attention, you should have figured it all out from the narrative and won't need it dumbed down and explained to you like the end of a television show.
This is a decent book, a bit over the top, but definitely fast paced and will capture your attention.
I love a good locked room mystery, and this one definitely lived up to the hype! Three couples-a secluded cabin-and dark secrets that begin to emerge—my type of book!
This was definitely a winner for me! I was not a fan of Unger’s last book-Last Girl Ghosted, but this up-coming release won me over from the first few chapters! It definitely hooks you in and is one that will keep you up late at night because it is hard to put down!
I loved the creepy setting and vibe of this book, Unger does an amazing job with the writing for this eerie & atmospheric read, and at times I almost felt I was there and got chills up my spine. The characters were all pretty unlikeable and unreliable, but I think that was the point here. This is definitely a slow burn, with lots of build up and suspense.
As many people have already suggested, I agree with going into this one blind and reading very little about it. The twists are great and I definitely did not predict where this was going.
Overall, this was a fun read and I think that if you are a locked-room mystery fan you will love this one!
Unger typically has solid suspense/thrillers and this was no different. It was a quick read, with some twists and I can see it being popular.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the advance copy to read and review.
I love Lisa Unger, and I especially love her Hallows books especially.
This newest is a tense twist on a locked room mystery with a few nods to And Then There Were None. A fast-paced and excellent read, with many twists and turns. I don't want to give anything away, as this is a book you want to pick up for snuggly wintery nights in.
I cannot recommend Lisa Unger enough.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a psychological and mystery thriller by Lisa Unger. It has two storylines and has multiple characters POV. A little exhausting to keep up.
Three couples vacation for a long weekend getaway in a luxury cabin deep in the woods. The getaway was set up by Mako because he wants to reconnect with his family and friends. Of course, Mako also likes the power to show off he can afford this experience and have a chef on the premises as well.
Each person and couple have their secrets that can tear apart years of friendship and possibly marriages.
Ghost story of a father killing his family before taking his life 20 years ago haunt the surrounding woods. This and a heavy rain storm adds terror and horror to the women as they are concerned for things they see (or to high and intoxicated) when looking out into the woods.
This was my first read that included DNA and ancestry. It was good plot/idea. However, overall the story was shabby. The characters were untrustworthy among themselves. Liars! Cheaters! This book includes rape and violence.
Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Pub Park Row for ARC in exchange for my review.
I’m a sucker for a locked room style mystery this time of year so I was excited to get my hands on this one. I was pretty much immediately drawn in here, there’s a ton of different viewpoints and while I wasn’t sure how they all fit together at first, I was able to settle in fairly quickly. There is one mysterious POV that doesn’t click into place until closer to the end but I was invested in this persons story and actually looked forward to their chapters when they popped up. The setting is fantastic, you have an isolated and claustrophobic cabin in the middle of nowhere and despite the amenities when Mother Nature brings a storm in money can’t save you. I think the less you know her the better off you are so if you enjoy tense and addictive locked room style thrillers try this, it was a lot of fun while also delivering a dark and sinister edge.
