What in the what. This was one twisty, messed-up book. Genetics are crazy, man.
The premise itself was absolutely awesome. I loved the idea, the synopsis, and honestly, most of the book. Unfortunately, a few things fell short for me: mostly, certain characters. I thought there were a few that were introduced and then had no growth, no arc, no ending. When I don't see the point or role of a side character, or if their line isn't finished up, that stands out to me in a book. I don't want to give anything away, so I won't elaborate.
Again, the story itself was fantastic. I just didn't see the point of introducing certain characters.
This was fast-paced and suspenseful with nice surprises along the way! This is my favorite type of thriller. Definitely go in blind to this one!
4 stars. This was a very good, entertaining thriller. I had fun reading it, but I did find that all the twists, backstories, and characters kind of became convoluted.
This was an addictive read that had me guessing what was going to happen next. I loved the suspense and twists and turns. Definitely recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book. I had a lot of high hopes going into this one, and maybe that was my fault. However, I really think that there are two many points of view, especially with one not clear how he ties until the very end. The six sleeping in the cabin are not the six viewpoints. It is alright, but it started out so strong that I feel it fell flat a bit by the end.

I’ve been looking forward to this one for quite a while, and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a story about love, family, betrayal; it’s about the horrific things that men so often get away with, but it’s also about the women who help them get away with their predatory actions, either actively or passively. I don’t know how I feel about all of the resolutions, but the book definitely made me think, which I wasn’t necessarily expecting from this type of thriller. The ending also wasn’t a huge surprise because, given the way the story was set up, there were really only a few ways it could go; nevertheless, it wasn’t boring or predictable in its execution, and I’m pretty sure some parts of it will stick with me. This was a fun, intriguing story that was well worth the wait.

Lisa Unger is one of my “must-read” authors. When I saw the cover of this one, I requested it without reading the blurb. I couldn’t resist the eerily creepy book cover with her name on it!
Six people in a luxurious but secluded cabin for the weekend.
Mako and Liza—Mako is wealthy and financing the trip. He’s also narcissistic and loves reminding everyone of how much money he spends on them.
Hannah and Bruce—Hannah is Mako’s sister. Bruce does some work for Mako’s tech company.
Cricket and Joshua—Cricket is Hannah’s bestie and Mako’s ex. She has brought along her new boyfriend whom no one knows.
When Liza and Joshua aren’t around, it’s obvious that there is still something between Mako and Cricket. And Bruce has been spending too much time on work calls lately. Things are heating up fast. And they reach the boiling point when Liza goes missing, the electricity goes out and a huge snowstorm hits.
The suspense starts building from the beginning when Hannah’s family members are gathered for Christmas. They all received anonymous gifts that contain DNA kits. No one claims responsibility and Christmas dinner ends poorly.
But that’s not all. Of course, Ms. Unger adds her usual undertones of supernatural.
And different stories are going on in the background. I was a bit overwhelmed by so many characters. Is this her best novel? Well…no, but I still enjoyed the intense mystery!
Sincere thanks to Lisa Unger and HTP/Park Row Books for providing this gifted ARC through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six intrigued me with its premise. I must be honest, the first thing I thought when I started was how in the heck would 6 adults go away with such seclusion!
Because I don't read a ton of thrillers, I'm pretty selective on which I read. I liked the idea of this "escape room" premise. I can assure you though, it was tough for me. I'm a scaredy cat and this book scared the bejeezus out of me!!
Family is complicated and this story illustrates that beautifully. Are we our genetics, or is family something we can chose? Hannah’s family has secrets - even more than she knows. These secrets explode because of genetic testing and a myriad of half siblings waiting in the wings. A weekend vacation is set in a beautiful home off grid but the weekend ends with death, and more secrets being exposed. The “family” is never the same.
This chillingly suspenseful novel creatively explores her characters’ innermost thoughts with a plot that challenges both the human psyche and morality. Carefully moving the reader to explore motives that go far beyond the real world into an unsettling world of unhinged characters, Unger redefines the definition of family loyalty and love.
The idyllic setting of a luxury remote cabin in the wood becomes the perfect setting to celebrate Mako’s birthday. It provides him a captive audience to boast about his financial success while his sister, Hannah, and their family dangerously relive the sins of their past.
With disturbing relevance to modern-world issues, Unger is not afraid to explore the darkest corners of humanity and the secret workings of the human mind. Reading every chapter with an insatiable desire to learn more about the macabre drama that continues to unfold, the reader will need to strap in. You will find yourself craving to see more of this terrifying scene unfold, with every page.
The final picture Unger paints continues to haunt me, yet it leaves me wanting more.
Trapped out in the middle of nowhere and in the worst weather conditions with people you’re not sure you can trust even the slightest is how this book goes! Six people who are very close to each other that are carrying heavy baggage of dirty dirty secrets gather to “enjoy” a weekend get away. There are so many POVs between Hannah, Bruce, Mako, Lisa, Cricket, Joshua basically every one in the couples. There is definitely a watcher outside waiting for the grand finale for what she’s planned! Grab this read when you can!
This book is definitely a wild, crazy ride!!!!!!!! You don't predict this story unraveling like it does to all come together towards the end. That is the magic of Lisa Unger's weird but so unique writing style.
Suspense/ Thriller. 3 couples go on vacation to a secluded cabin in the woods. Some one is watching them and everyone is keeping secrets.
This was a real page turner. I enjoyed the different relationships between all of the characters and couldn't tell what was going to happen. I would recommend.
I loved this book and truly couldn't put it down. The setting was stunning and the story shocking. I flew through the pages as I always do with Lisa Unger books. 5 stars!
I have no idea why it took me 25 days to read this. I adore the dark mind and writing of Lisa Unger.
This book is one of her best. I couldn’t figure out all the characters and their connections for the longest time and some were very sketchy and turned out to be less dark than others. Dealing with DNA and finding out your genealogy adds a great twist to this book. The secluded cabin added so much dark atmosphere! I believe my two favorite characters were Hannah and Henry. They believed in love so much and had very little to do with each other but their unique story arcs were so very well written.
I would give this book 4.5 stars. Definitely pick this book up if you haven’t read! I read a gifted e galley thank you to Park Row books.
As I was reading, I noticed we were getting chapters from characters we hadn't met yet. Ooh, like CONFESSIONS ON THE 7:45! That was a 4-star book, so I had hope for this one.
It's not bad. It's 3.5 stars, maybe. Though it's obviously about family, it also raises questions of redemption. Is redemption possible? What circumstances can prevent a seemingly high-risk person from committing unethical/criminal acts? Who deserves, or doesn't, forgiveness?
Henry's heart is too good for this world. Thus some choices he made were annoying.
The acknowledgements section mentions that the author found something dark in her own family history, which may or may not turn up in her fiction one day. I am a stickybeak, so of course I want to know what!
I am not sure what I was expecting, but I don’t think it was this. A closed circle mystery as the three couples are stranded at a cabin during a hurricane. The group consists of siblings, their spouses and a new boyfriend. So you already know who to suspect, right? The group newcomer, but I kept wondering if that was too obvious.
As I read the tension grew as the stakes soared. While I wasn’t able to guess the final outcome, I do think all the clues were there. I always love a book about siblings and their dynamics. I am intrigued by the DNA testing kits and who can use those results.
I was entertained by all the secrets, but I did have to pay attention as there are multiple narrators and POVs. If you like slow builds and complex plots, you’ll like this one.
I am a huge fan of Lisa Unger and was thrilled to get this early copy. The book started off really strong but fell flat in the second half. I didn't find it very thrilling and maybe a little predictable.
Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six by Lisa Unger is an incredibly suspenseful well written thriller that I asbolutely DEVOURED.
I love the premise, cabin in the woods, not internet or cell service, family secrets, and more.
This one had me on the edge of my seat.
Absolutely LOVED IT!
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC. The novel started off so strong I felt really invested in the beginning with the characters and theme. However the second half fell flat and I was regretful of not feeling invested in the writing.
