Back with the Pirate Crew like no other! Now it's Duke's turn to get spiked by Cupids Arrow.

Duke may be second in charge on the ship but that didn't stop him from siding with the crew against their previous captain. He has kept a secret or two in his time and currently the biggest he's keeping belongs to his current captain-in-name-only Ian. He's had a lot of professions over the year but now runs a security company.

He never expected that when he met a female who could hold his interest that she'd shoot him in the foot! What an introduction to the beautiful Annika.

Annika is a mermaid. Unlike folklore, her people came from the Stars - they just opened a portal into the depths of the sea. They soon realised that Earth was not for them, but not before some had lost their combs and therefore Annika made it her responsibility to ensure that the portals stayed closed and to secure the missing combs.

Now the Sea Dog crew are part of her "team" to secure the combs, whilst warding off Section 13. However, the department is having a headache of their own - it would seem they have a leak and someone is siphoning off relics. Are these thefts linked to the mole or a separate problem?

Lots to keep you interested and I loved the new spin on Mermaids from Space! Annika and Duke were a great pairing and I enjoyed the sparks they gave off. Annika is no damsel in distress and she can take care of Duke if & when the need arises. Plenty of red herrings and a couple of big reveals.

I'm actually coming around to liking Ian! His secret was heartbreaking. Roll on book 8 please!

Thank you to Entangled Publishing and Netgalley for an e-arc of this book to read and review. I really like the characters, I do have to say I started this book at number 6 instead of number one so I only have a little bit of background, but I liked seeing all the cameos anyway. Duke and Annika are fun and I liked the quest vibes of this one. I would have loved a bit more of their story because the ending just felt a bit short. I also love the pirate spice and these are great for that. I had a good time reading this installment and always enjoy the adventure type of romance.

Will they let their worlds tear them apart …

After the Atlanteans, this new book deals with merfolk, just awesome.
It is really like the Aladdin’s cave, each alcove hides a mystery. I want to know more about the Department 13, and 51, and of course Eli, Flynn and Bob.
Duke was torn away for his little world with no return way as a young man, since he tried to do better, his guilt of abandoning his siblings unintentionally gnawing at him. Since he protects the others, thinking he is in some way cursed to this lonely life but feeling content even if things have changed in the last few years and he is now questioning some of his recent choices.
Annika in on a deadline, finding her comb or dying she will. Too long away from salt water is suickly eating at her. Soon she will only be a shadow of herself if her lead is wrong. She is surprise by the man she encounters, he is human but something more too.
They thought they only have hours together, stolen from reality, two persons with different if not opposite needs and habits, yet two persons who feel the other as part of themselves until their deal remind them of who they are.
Two immortal beings separated by more than an ocean of differences. Will the feelings growing between them be strong enough for them to work to smooth out what appeared at first as an impossible future, are they willing to fight for their love …

I enjoy this series so much I periodically check on Ms. Kessler's website to see if a new book is available.
The main premise of each book is how a group of ancient day pirates find the Holy Grail and each one of them takes a drink from it making them immortal. It was recently discovered that they needed to drink periodically to remain immortal. Several of the pirates have fallen in love so they each decided whether or not drink again or age gracefully with the one they love.

Before they discovered the Holy Grail they were just pirates but their captain,Captain Morgan, was a sadistic son of a gun. He finally went too far and flogged one of the pirates to death. The men mutiny and leave the Captain on an uncharted deserted island.

Annika is a mermaid who left her magical comb in Atlantis. She found out that her comb was given to a pirate on the Sea Dog who helped them save their land. She climbs on to the boat sees a pirate and holds on him. "I want my comb back." He denies having it so she shots him in the foot. This is how Duke and Anni Kia's story begins.

This is a lot of fun to read, a highly entertaining story, even though it's not the best in the series.
Lisa Kessler delivers another well written story and I liked the characters and the plot.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Pirate's Protector by Lisa Kessler
This is the seventh book in the author's Sentinels of Savannah series with Duke Proctor and Annika Mare's story of Pirates and Mermaids. But all the previous Pirates and their wives and of course Agent Bale from Department 13 will be there to hopefully saved the day.

Annika Mare needs her comb ( Given to them by the Atlantean from the last book) back from the Pirates and Agent Bale because without it she can't return to the ocean and oh did I mention if someone figures out what the comb does she'll have to do as that people holding the combs request? So she turns to Duke Proctor to help her retrieve it from Agent Bale but has someone already stolen it and wants to use it against our favorite Pirates of Savannah. She will die if she doesn't return to the ocean in her mermaid form as it heals her body and soul.

Duke Proctor has had many careers in the 200 years he's been alive since taking a drink from the Holy Grail but being confronted by a mermaid is a new experience for him. Will he help her find the comb and retrieve it from the person who stole it from the vault? Can they fight the attraction they feel for each other even though she must return to the ocean in order not to die a slow death? Will there be lots of action and handsome Pirates in the story? Of course and will you want more books about the last remaining men from the Sea Dog ship to find their forever love? Absolutely!

I've read other books in this series but this one fell flat for me. I didn't feel the chemistry between Duke and Annika (a mermaid). Annika thinks Duke has stolen her magical comb which he hasn't. I had a hard time liking Annika. My favorite scene was at the end when she shows Duke something very special. The emotions in that scene leapt of the page. Even though Duke is immortal he was young once and that moment for me was the highlight of the story.

I've read a fair amount of supernatural romance, and I will have to say that this one is different from most (nary a shapeshifter to be found). Seventh in a series about immortal pirates (but my first), it can be read as a standalone, but I suspect reading the prior novels would have helped; there are a LOT of secondary characters to keep track of.

Here, we have the story of immortal pirate Duke and mermaid Annika, who meet when Annika holds Duke at gunpoint, demanding he return her comb. Attraction is nearly instantaneous, but hopes of a future are supposedly futile because of the whole can't live permanently on land/in the sea issue. It's never fully clear to me why that would be an issue seeing as both can spend some time in the other's environment. Like any romance, the success of it would depend compromise. Anyway, that's the main obstacle to a future for them.

The other obstacle is Annika's missing comb; if the comb falls into the wrong hands, she can be commanded to do things at that person's will. That right there should have the main plot point, but it never really gains much traction. The search for the comb is not particularly difficult, and eventually retrieving it isn't difficult either. The story mostly but never fully resolves; I'm guessing it will come to a head in future novels.

So yeah, immortal pirates, mermaids, the Holy Grail, and the Fountain of Youth, plus a secret repository of supernaturalia (I think I made that word up) where remnants from all types of mythology are stored... It feels a little like the Pirates of the Caribbean have stumbled onto the set where the final scene of Raiders of the Lost Ask was filmed. The story reads well, and the characters seem really cool, but it never really settles into a fully comfortable pace for me.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!

I really enjoyed this next book in the series. The thought of an Immortal pirate and a mermaid.... I figured this will get interesting, and it did. Lots to keep you guessing how it would all get handled. It also has me eager for the next one. *Reviewed for Net Galley.*

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

To get started, I’m going to talk about what I liked. I did like that it was a pirate and mermaid love story. I wish the romance was more of main plot, but I loved it regardless. I did like the spice as well, and I liked that it wasn’t so overwhelming. It was just enough.

So, I didn’t really like the Director’s point of view. It felt unnecessary and I ended up skipping those parts and still understood what was going on. His POVs just felt forgettable.

I expected this to be in the golden age of pirates, not modernized, however, I didn’t see too much of problem with it until it came to Duke’s speaking. The fact that he still used “yer” and “ye” just felt out of place.

Other than that, I enjoyed it and it was an easy read. The only reason it took me so long was because I was finishing school for the semester.

3 out of 5 stars.

The crew gets shaken up in more ways than one in this latest addition to the series. I am reeling from all that took place. Action overload and some of the most sizzling sexcapades! I loved it from beginning to end and can’t wait for the next installment. Book provided by NetGalley.

“Annika Mare is searching for her comb. She is a mermaid and in the wrong hands it could be deadly.

Duke Proctor is a immortal pirate and has lived many lifetimes. He agrees to help Annika find her comb along the way there attraction explodes.

“You make me want things I can’t have.” He tipped his head slightly. “I was hoping you wanted me. And you can definitely have me, Annika.”

This series has such a unique premise. It also reminds me a little of that old tv show Warehouse 13 with all the crazy artifacts and power hungry evil villains.

I really enjoyed this story. I skipped several books in this series and now I’m gonna have to go back and read them all.

Duke Proctor is the first mate of the Sea Dog's immortal pirate crew. They are sometimes asked by Department 13 to "obtain" objects that have magical powers that could be dangerous to the world in the wrong hands.

Annika Mare knows the Sea Dog crew have her comb. Because it can be used to control her, she cannot return to the sea until it is back in safe hands.

This is an action packed, magical paranormal romance.

It's written in a way that makes it all seem very believable. It has some sexy scenes and emotional moments. All the characters are so much fun. If you have read any of the previous books in the series you will have met many of them before. That would help you to understand the back story for them all, but you can still enjoy this or any of the books on their own.

I'm not entirely sure if this is the last book because not all the crew members have a forever partner, so I will definitely be keeping a look out for them.

Great fun.

This was a good beach read. Steamy and light. It didn’t totally blow me out of the water but it was still enjoyable enough.

An immortal pirate, Duke, falls for a mermaid and all the romantic adventures ensue. Annika is searching for her lost comb, which holds magical powers. She thinks Duke has it, but is frustrated to discover he doesn’t. They go on the quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands.

It can be read as a standalone but is part of a series. There wasn’t a ton of really great character development so they read as a bit flat and not so well rounded, making it hard to connect with them and really root for the romance. The steam level was okay but could have used a bit more heat and spice. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Department 13 plot element and felt it could have been done without it.

Overall, if you enjoy pirate romances set in modern times. This one is for you.

I absolutely loved this one!! I think it is the best one yet! It's spicy, full of action and adventure.. The romance is so unbelievably sweet, I just want to hug my Kindle or the author... or all of them together in a group hug!

This is a pretty solid fantasy romance. It’s a stand-alone that’s also part of a larger series. While it’s perfectly enjoyable on its own, it would definitely be best appreciated having read all the previous books. I enjoyed the take on mermaids, the pirates, the other fantasy elements, and of course the romance, but since there isn’t a ton of character and relationship development, I would have loved just a tad more spice.

Pirate's Protector by Lisa Kessler
The Pirate (Duke) and the Mermaid (Annika) I really enjoyed their story. Plenty of angst, deception, violence, horror, friends, family, enemies, suspense, laughter, love, steam and a good story. This book is part of a series and I know there will be more - but Duke and Annika get their HEA.
Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Action-packed Easy-to-read Entertaining Haunting Happily Ever After Page-turner Romantic Scary Steamy Tear-jerker Tragic Unpredictable Witty Wonderful characters

Pirate’s Protector was a DNF for me at 60%. Nothing was happening in the plot, the romance wasn’t romancing, and the mystery wasn’t interesting enough to keep me reading. I’m really disappointed because this sounded like something I would really enjoy.

A new pirate book with a mermaid. What more could you ask for? Duke is an immortal pirate and Annika is a mermaid looking for her comb. The comb was being held at Department 13 because it was a powerful relic. While searching for the comb, Department 13 finds that a lot of the relics stored are missing.

While Duke and Annika search for the comb, they encounter a couple of unexpected surprises that are not good. This book takes you on a roller coaster of ups and downs. Definitely one of my favorites in this series. While the couple gets their HEA, the overall story arc is definitely not over. I can’t wait to see what the author brings next.
