As someone who has South American heritage, I thought it would be interesting to look into these recipes! . This book has a good variety of recipes with a good mix of photos! Clearly articulated and beautifully laid out.
There were some interesting recipes in this book with interesting stories and commentary from the author and instructions on how to make some authentic Spanish dishes. Although it says that it's for beginners, I feel that you do need some basic cooking experience to be able to attempt some of these recipes.
I really enjoy Spanish food and having read such good reviews of this book, I was keen to reproduce some of the delicious food from the region.
The small book is attractively presented with good photographs and generally clear instructions. I do have a problem, however, with recipes supposedly for beginners that simply state “parsley” and “thyme” (for example in the recipe for stewed lentils) Even more capable cooks might ask how much of each should be added, and are they left whole or chopped?
Most of the ingredients would be readily available in local grocery stores, but I have mixed feelings about the recipes as many seemed to lack the depth of flavour that for me epitomises Spanish food.
Why all the blank pages at the end? I cannot see myself, or anyone else, using these pages to write in recipes. It just feels like trying to make the book feel more detailed than it actually is, and would put me off buying it for anyone else.
I enjoy cookbooks from many different cuisines, but this one fell flat. There were almost no recipes that I would have tried. I can’t pinpoint exactly what went wrong for myself, but it didn’t stand out to me as a cookbook I would use.
Selecting only 30 recipes to represent such a rich culinary culture as the Spanish one, is not an easy task and unsurprisingly, it didn’t work out. I am not judging the quality of the recipes themselves, but more the way the book presents the recipes. This book tries to be a general introduction to Spanish cuisine, but in the same way, is just a selection of one person who is not the focus of the book itself. I think all the books in this edition should have been composed and marketed more like a selection of favourite dishes of a typical person from each country, that would still stay within the lines of being authentic and random at the same time.
Thank you Netgalley UK for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this cookbooks! The recipes and tips were very accessible and the steps are very clear. I loved every recipes that I tried!

Spanish Cooking for Beginners has 4 main chapters plus a short Introduction and menu suggestions.
Tapas and Pinchos have 11 recipes to choose from; Meat and Fish have 8 recipes; Vegetables and Salads have 7 recipes and the sweet/pudding section has 6 recipes.
Each recipe includes an introduction, the ingredients required in both imperial and metric measurements, most have an accompanying colour photograph or illustrations and easy-to-follow steps.
At the rear of the book, there is space to write 20 of your own recipes.
The recipes included seem simple enough for a beginner, but there doesn't seem to be any reason they have been chosen if that makes sense - it could be any Spanish cookery book, not just for beginners.
A note to readers, inside the front cover it does state the content of this book was previously published in 'Let's Cook Spanish: A Family Cookbook' (2016).
I received this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.
Brightly colored with great flair, Spanish Cooking for Beginners is inviting and well laid out. The cookbook starts with an introduction to the cuisine and the different regions of Spain. The recipes are separated into logical sections, which I have listed below with some of the standout dishes.
Tapas and Pinchos: Basic Potato Omelet; Grilled Green Asparagus with Orange Mayonnaise
Meat and Fish: Homemade Meatballs; Valencian Paella; Iberian Pork Filet
Vegetables and Salads: Stewed Lentils; Vegetable Stew; Country Potato Salad
May Your Life Be Sweet: Baked Apples with Custard; Orange Confit
This cookbook is more than just about the recipes. The author has included colorful photos of Spain and some history behind the cuisine. Not every finished dish has an accompanying photograph, which can be a problem in a cookbook for beginners. The author has included helpful tips and hints throughout, using blue text boxes to make it easier.
Overall, Spanish Cooking for Beginners is a great start for those wanting to learn more about the region and its cuisine.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy of Spanish Cooking for Beginners: Simple and Delicious Recipes for All Occasions by NetGalley and the publisher. The decision to read and review this cookbook was entirely my own.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* pretty good book for beginner Spanish cooking, would rather buy a more advanced one personally but these would be really cute in a gift basket for sure!
I love Spanish food, I love tapas. So what’s not to love about this book. Some great little recipes to try and authentically cook with a great range of ingredients to play about with. Definitely worth a read and a try if you are feeling adventurous.
Whilst there looks to be some great recipes in this book, my worry is that they use some pricey ingredients which youd probably buy once and never use again. Its very much a cookbook for special occasions and not an everyday cook book for your average home cook.
Great book full of lovely recipes to try. A good range. Very easy to follow the directions. I’d definitely recommend this book I’d buy for myself too
I quite liked this book but in honesty there weren’t many recipes I would make. Often the ingredients would not be readily available
Amazing recipes! Easy to follow and mouthwatering results. I have wanted to try Spanish cooking for ages, so was thrilled with this book. Will be making ad many of these recipes as I can!
I would be more than happy to re-read the book with a better file or as a physical book as the book topic and genre is of interest to me. This was a great starter cookbook and I will definitely be making some of these recipes and adding them to my everyday cookbook!
Recipes provide an easy way to add a Spanish flair to your meals by offering options for sides, main or desserts. A list of menus at the end also lets you pick and chose from a full menu to optional adds. The beginner level designation speaks to the recipes but does not mean the options are not adventurous and delicious. Pasta Paella anyone.
This cookbook is a good introduction to Spanish cooking! There aren't a ton of recipes (which I like in a beginner's cookbook because I don't feel overwhelmed) and most of them are pretty accessible and easy to make.
The pictures are mostly gorgeous. I think I would've liked more of them, and maybe a little more selectivity or ah, better angles on the ones that don't look quite as exciting. Still, overall I liked the photos. Loved the ones with lots of colorful elements. Formatting is a little wonky in some places on my digital edition—a couple of upside down recipes here and there—but nothing too bothersome.
I appreciate that the more of these introductory cookbooks to foods of different cultures I read, the more I'm seeing the threads. Almost all of them have a take on a lentil stew, an almond cake, a fritter, a rice dish, a sweet bread, etc. conceding a kind of universal cultural influence while maintaining the individuality on each one. It's so interesting to me to see how cultures take foods and make them their own. I kind of wish there had been more sweets but then I always wish there were more sweets.
Anyway, if you're looking to get into Spanish cuisine, this is an excellent introduction. Highly recommend the paella, bakes apples, or torrijas.
If you like tapas then you will like this book. Beautiful pictures alongside easy to follow descriptions. I love Spain. We own a second home there. So to be able to recreate the food is a big plus for me.
On the downside. The book is very short with not many pages. Also some of my favourite dishes aren’t included.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to see an arc
