Iris is seventy, and starting to have memory lapses, did she take her pills or didn't she? Living alone in her large Victorian Pacific Heights house, one she can no longer care for by herself, she meets Lydia, a hapless waitress, and her boyfriend Seth, a short tempered loser with a gambling addiction, these are the people that Iris takes pity on, and moves them in to her home to take care of her? I had trouble with this decision from the beginning, could she have chosen any two people more unsuited! Then within two weeks Iris is missing after a chilling call to 911! There are places where the story drags, then it begins again with twists and turns that you see coming, but don't see how it can end well for Iris. I gave it 3 1/2 stars. It is worth the read and I think it would make good TV viewing!

Iris meets Lydia at a diner where Lydia is a waitress. Iris can see that Lydia is not happy with her job and before leaving the diner, Iris leaves a note for Lydia with her phone number and an offer of help. Soon, Lydia and her boyfriend Seth have moved in and are now working for Iris as caretakers. When Iris mysteriously disappears, leaving behind blood and signs of a struggle the Police assume the Caretakers have killed Iris, but with no body it’s going to be hard to prove. I enjoyed this mystery but not as much as I thought I would, because I found it very slow and drawn out. The ending was a good one, not very surprising but still good.
Definitely a different kind of mystery than I'm used to but totally engrossing mystery. Lots of twists and turns and a surprising twist ending. Keeps you on your toes and totally unexpected ending.
This thriller had me hooked right from the beginning. When Iris was first introduced I thought her a completely different character from what she was and despite after reaching the halfway point I could start to suspect what was going on, it still kept me on edge. The flashbacks to the past were a very nice touch and added more depth. The ending was brilliant and showed never to underestimate someone!
This book had me stumped. Sitting smug and thinking I had it all thought out, the author put me in my place. Finally we have a thriller that will keep you your toes.
I found this an average thriller to be honest, none of the plot twists unexpected and the characters too bland to form any attachment too, one I would pick up from the free shelf on holiday and enjoy but not sure I would purchase
After seventy year old Iris becomes forgetful and fearful of someone breaking in to her home, she hires a local waitress and her boyfriend to house sit. Everything is going well, despite Iris' waning mental state, until Iris goes missing. All hell breaks loose, though, once Iris goes missing. Her house sitters are the prime suspects, but is there more to the story than these characters are letting on?
The answer is not really, as the books plot twist can be seen coming from a mile away. Every hint is blatant, and so are each of the characters motivations. Along with these motivations, each character in The House Sitter is the definition of a thriller stereotype.
Unfortunately, despite an enticing cover, The House Sitter has nothing to offer. In a market that's oversaturated with thrillers that try to outsmart the reader, this novel remains a weak attempt.
My thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Publishing for this ARC.
This was a real page turner! I had a feeling there would be a huge twist, and I was not disappointed. I didn't particularly like any of the characters, but I think that was part of the guessing what would happen next.
Thanks to netgalley, the publisher and the author fir the ARC.
I received an ARC of this book from Bookouture via NetGalley in exchange for my honest feedback. I definitely enjoyed this novel, though I think I would categorize it more as domestic drama than psychological thriller. I agree with other reviewers that neither the title nor the synopsis really fit the book. Seth & Lydia were helpers/ caretakers, never house sitters. And the synopsis is in Lydia's voice which isn't really done anywhere else in the book. Those issues aside, I found this book to be a page turner that I was eager to finish. I would have actually given 5 stars except for the unsatisfying ending. Also, Iris is supposedly 70 but written as if she were 90! 70 is not old these days - this would have been more believable if Iris were older.
I have some some upheaval over the last couple of days, so I am sorry this is a little late. Thank you to Bookouture for my spot on the tour and for the copy of the book, via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

I hadn't read anything by Ellery Kane before this book, but I will be looking for more from her in the future. I think the story really got my attention before I had finished the first chapter, and did a good job holding onto it throughout. It had a sinister vibe from the outset, and while I was able to work out where things were going, it didn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the book, as can easily happen.
I don’t know if I can say I liked Seth or Lydia, but their characters were well written, fully formed, and quite credible, and I did empathise with Lydia’s position before she met Iris in San Francisco. I liked Iris but immediately feared the worst given that the story begins with the 911 call that finds her missing, and a large amount of blood in her home. My favourite character was probably Maureen Shaw. I admittedly do root for the cops as a rule, but she was awesome. I do hope that there may be another book in the future which may have a part for Maureen.
Overall, I enjoyed the read. It was suspenseful, and held a decent amount of tension over with each chapter to make you fall into the “Just one more chapter” trap. I gave The House Sitter, by Ellery Kane, four stars.
Thrilling. Addictive. Packed with twists I just didn't see coming. A wonderful book that I absolutely loved and very highly recommend.
This was a very good read. Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me to review it. I'll be sure to look for more from this author.
The House Sitter was a fantastic read. It's made my summer book recommendation list. I loved how different of a story it was. Ellery Kane did a great job with the plot and the writing was great.
Although the beginning was a bit slow go for me, as the author introduced characters and begun to unveil their complexity, I got hooked and could not put the book down.
My favorites were Maureen and "Tallboy." They were not perfect and made plenty of questionable choices, but they were compassionate, inquisitive, likable and pursuers of the truth.
There are many twists in this book, and a few nicely surprised me.
Overall, this was a fun quick read and I cannot wait to see what new book might be written by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Ellery Kane for this advanced copy!
The House Sitter was not what I expected, in a good way! After taking a little bit of time to get into it, I found it really hard to stop reading this one! Now, it was a lengthy read, be warned, but what a gripping, intense and twisty read it was!
Throughout this suspenseful mystery, I never knew who I could really trust. We have Iris, the older lady who has disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Seth and Lydia, her new lodgers/caretakers living with her after a brief encounter at a diner. Maureen, the overly ambitious rookie cop with a traumatic history. Are all as they seem? Well I'm obviously not giving that away but these unreliable narrators add to the mystery for sure!
At times I thought I knew where this was headed next, I was right about a few things but there were some twists in here I didn't expect. Having said this, I wouldn't say I found it predictable, I've just read a lot of books! The dual timelines really helped to create a weaving and meandering tale.
Overall, I was a really good read! I found it engaging and was on the edge of my seat from time to time, wondering how it was all going to end. And that ending, phew, it was a goodie!

Iris is a wealthy and lonely widow. A burglary has left her shaken and afraid, so she hires Lydia and Seth to help take care of her house. Before long they have moved into her home and Iris finally begins to feel safe again. Or is she?
The House Sitter is a psychological thriller that will keep most readers turning the pages long into the night. As the story unfolds, using a before and after timeline as well as different points of view, it is apparent that there are many secrets yet to be revealed. The characters are well-defined, although not all of them are likable. One unexpected figure is Maureen, a rookie cop who is trying to cope with her own past. She is an interesting addition to the story, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
And, finally, the twists that occur throughout the book were well-done and even though I anticipated several of them, it didn’t diminish my overall enjoyment of the book. I highly recommend The House Sitter to anyone who likes this genre. Well done, Ms Kane!
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
Iris hires Seth and Lydia to take care of her house, after a burglary leaves her feeling scared alone. As they all get closer, hidden secrets start to become exposed. Seth's temper, Lydia's secrets and Iris suddenly becoming confused. Then Iris goes missing, a fatal amount of blood in the bedroom. What really happened that night?
A fantastic edge of your seat thriller! I flew through this, it's absolutely fantastic. The twists came slowly, with maximum impact.
A thriller that leaves you gasping at the ending... what more can you want?
FABULOUS psychological thriller with great characterization invoking mixed feelings, wrapped up in an intriguing story line & concluding with a wicked payback finale. Enjoyed & RECOMMEND all of Ellerys' crime novels for very entertaining reads. Thanks to NetGalley & Bookouture for this ARC in return for my honest review.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I read about 30 percent of this book and I just couldn't finish it. The main character, Seth, was so annoying that I just could not read anymore. I thought it was very confusing at this point also.
"You're just the girl I've been looking for."
This book had me hooked from page one. The story is told in a dual time line: Iris, an elderly woman, who let Lydia and Seth in her life to help her take care of her big property; Maureen, a rookie cop investigating Iris's disappearance and possible murder. The pacing was good and kept my interest all the way. Lydia and Seth are despicable characters you love to hate. The only negative comment I have is that the title is very misleading. It's not about a single house sitter, it's about a couple of caretakers. But it was a great suspense with a very satisfying ending!
I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and Bookouture, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
