Yasmin is learning about birds at school, which comes in handy when there's a mystery to solve! Someone has misplaced a thimble and eyeglasses. Yasmin plays detective and of course solves the case. This is an excellent edition to the Yasmin series.
The Yasmin series is one of my favorites to read to my little girl. I love the illustrations/stories and the additional details in the back of the book on the language differences. This is awesome to help me educate my 4 year old on other cultures!
In Yasmin the Detective, things are disappearing, and Yasmin is on the case! I love Yasmin. The Yasmin series shows how young children can practice very important skills that are linked to a profession. In this case, readers see Yasmin use her deduction skills to find who has been stealing shiny things from her grandmother. A lovely addition to the series
A very charming short story that introduces the nature of what a detective job entails to children. The art style is very lovely and is a perfect reading companion for children who are very curious and inquisitive.
Important to start discussing occupations when kids are young. This latest book in the Yasmin series is great for young readers and perfect for Grade 1-3 classrooms.
Thank you Picture Window Books and NetGalley for the ARC.
Yasmin books are always so wonderful. I love the story line, having a book with people of color in them for young children to relate to, and the detective piece was a bit for my daughter.
This is such a charming series! I can’t wait to share it with my nibblings and recommend it to my friends with kids.
We love the Yasmin series and this title was no exception. From start to finish, my little flew through this one in no time at all and will definitely enjoy rereading it. As a parent, I love her reading about characters that are culturally different and learning about differences through exciting and entertaining stories like this. Thank you so much for publishing these wonderful books!
Short but interesting story about a girl detective named Yasmin. Here, we also learn to say some Urdu words used in the novel. One interesting book that can encourage kids to read more and longer books. Love the idea of a detective, since detective is rarely boring.
This is a very beautifully illustrated chapter book written by Pakistani American author Saadia Faruqi and illustrated by Egyptian-born illustrator Hatem Aly. In this book, Yasmin's grandmother loses several objects which include a button, a thimble, and a pair of glasses and Yasmin is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery at play!
I really enjoyed the illustrations and thought they were drawn beautifully! The colours and the image placements were done very well throughout the book. Each character has distinct features and focused on elements that enhanced the story well. For example, the image that showed Yasmin watching her favourite detective Dr. Hoo while being completely engrossed in the story as Nani comes in to discuss her dilemma. It introduced characters and their interests well.
There are some discussion prompts that are helpful for learners and educators and there is a Urdu glossary at the end with a pronunciation key for various terms in Urdu. Fun facts were provided about Pakistan at the end of the book, and a binocular DIY guide is added in for extra fun!
Regarding the story, I really enjoyed Yasmin and her family and I thought it provided a fun and easy to follow mystery to be solved for young readers. I did have one qualm re: the story when it came to the retrieval of items, though it's very minor, I simply think that both parties could have been happier at the end. Nonetheless, it was very cute! And a good read for readers K-2.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a cute little short story! It's my first time reading a Yasmin book, but I really loved the art and Yasmin is such a proactive kid, deciding to be a detective and find out what happened to her Nani's missing items, using all of the things she sees on TV and learns at school to figure out who the culprit is. I also loved the use of Urdu in the story and even the glossary and info at the back. It's a book that tells a story, informs young readers, and helps them review what they've read. Would love to read more of these books!
I love how Yasmin comes to her grandmother’s aid to solve the mystery of her missing items, while also leveraging her learnings from school! Also loved the little tidbits at the back of the book - some Urdu words to learn, how to make binoculars for kids etc
4 Stars
Yasmin is a cute little girl who loves birds and the show Detective Hoo. When her Naani's (grandmother) items go missing, Yasmin decides to become a detective and solve the case.
This little chapter book is a part of the series and can be read as a standalone. Yasmin comes from a Pakistani-American family, like the author. She is cute, clever, and super sweet (just look at her on the cover!). The story is written in simple words for kids to read on their own (with help from elders, if necessary).
This book is perfect for inquisitive little ones. It has questions and activities at the end to help elders make things more fun for the kids. Oh, there’s a glossary with meanings for Urdu words and some information about Pakistan. The illustrations are lovely. The color scheme and expression come out really well.
To sum up, Yasmin the Detective is an entertaining and informative read for little kiddos.
I received an ARC from NetGalley, Capstone, and Picture Window Books and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I didn't enjoy this series entry as much as some of the others, but it's still a solid beginning chapter book. I do like reading about a Muslim, Pakistani-American family where their identity is a natural part of the story but not at all the focus of the story. Young fans of Yasmin will definitely want to read her newest adventure.
Ohhh this is an absolutely delightful book!! I am new to the Yasmin series and I wish I had been reading these all along [and SO wish I had known of them when I had my littles here all the time; they would have been perfect for the littlest one at the time]. Perfect for new readers, this one is set in three "chapters" [more to set up the different sections of the story and to get newer readers used to chapter books without being overwhelming] and is about one of my favorite subjects - solving a mystery.
Yasmin is a fun little girl, with a quick mind and a serious love for her family and this was just a delightful story from beginning to end, and to top it off, there is fun information at the end, a couple of fun things to do on your own and then a small dictionary of Urdu words and how to speak them [as Yasmin's family speaks Urdu and the author encourages the reader to learn to speak it along with Yasmin], which was really neat. I have never tried to speak Urdu and this was both helpful and straightforward and a lot of fun.
I think anyone who reads this will love it and I am going to be recommending it to everyone I know.
Thank you to NetGalley, Saadia Faruqui, Hatem Aly - Illustrator, and Capstone/Picture Window Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Love these Yasmin early readers. A hit amongst my 1st and 2nd grade students and this is another good one to add to my beginning of the year purchase order. Yasmin helps her Nani find some small items that have gone missing. The culprit is not who you might think! Also enjoy the glossary, fun facts, and activity pages at the end.
What a fun book I've read. Colorful and suitable for my children. It is about Yasmin, a Pakistani little girl who is beautiful and bright, and lives with her family including her grandparents. Oh my, how I miss grandparents 😢. One day, her grandmother's thimble is missing. It is odd since her granny just put it in the right place.
Not so long, other things are missing too. Of course Yasmin the detective is on the case! So many lessons we are learned. From a culture and motor skills. And Yasmin is an adventure girl!
I give 5 ⭐️ for this. Thanks to @netgalley and the publisher for providing an earc.
I received an electronic ARC from Capstone through NetGalley.
Yasmin is back and tries to solve a mystery. Her Nani keeps losing items and no one can find them. Using her interest in birds and skills from the detective show she watches, plus paying attention to a lesson her teacher shares, she figures out who the thief is. Her Baba assists and retrieves the missing items. The story flows well in language for mid-elementary level readers. Our readers will be excited to get the latest in this series and it won't stay on the shelf.
An Own Voices story from a Pakistani American author. Faruqi includes a glossary of Urdu words and information about Pakistan at the end of the book. She also includes directions for readers to make their own binoculars for fun.
A fun detective story for children that promotes cultural awareness. It's also interesting in that it teaches readers a bit about crows – some interesting facts that I think kids will totally dig.
This book also contains an Urdu glossary, some fun facts about Pakistan, and an arts and crafts project. Informational and interactive.
Yasmin the Detective is a cute story about a girl who solves a mystery with clues provided by her science class! I like this book, it's adorable and entertaining in general.
