Oh, how I wish I had more books like this when I was younger. I love Yasmin because she's inquisitive and always learning. Moreover, I love this series because it highlights a traditionally underrepresented cultural background in children's fiction. The discussion questions and glossary of Urdu words at the back of the book are such a nice touch as well. Love it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC. All opinions are my own.
This was short and sweet! Perfect little story for a new reader, and enjoyable illustrations to look at along the way!
**I reviewed Yasmin the Detective by Saadia Faruqi from NetGalley for my honest review. #YasmintheDetective #NetGalley**
Amazing as usual! Read it to my kids and they gave it 5 stars! Love the whole series!! I cannot wait to share more Yasmin adventures with them!
This book was really cute! It did a great job showing critical thinking and creative problem solving. There was a lot of information about birds in it as well. Seeing family members including more than just parents/siblings was great too. And the illustrations were lovely!
Another super cute Yasmin read! Yasmin is having a relaxing day when suddenly many family items start to go missing! She has to put on her detective cap and use her knowledge from science at school to crack this case. Love the bit of suspense it had as Yasmin became a detective and used her family for help. Always a wonderful incorporation of Urdu words that kids can then see the definitions of at the end of the book.

I loved this book! Ms. Faruqi has made Yasmin a smart and lovable character-one to cheer for again and again. I can’t wait to read more.
Adorei a leitura.
Achei a Yasmin muito espertinha e deu vontade de apertar em diversos momentos.
Quero ler mais livros com essa personagem, sem dúvidas. Vi que tem vários.

This illustrated chapter book is a short mystery for beginning readers. In it, Yasmin is on the case. Who is taking her grandmother’s things? Adults will know right away and some kids may too. Nonetheless, they may be happy to have a book that they can read on their own.
There are some very good resources at the back of the book. As Yasmin is Pakistani American there are some common Pakistani words and their English translations, some fun facts about Pakistan, a binocular making craft and questions to think about. All of these short sections add to this title’s value.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Capstone-Picture Window Books for this title. All opinions are my own.
A cute chapter book about a little girl who becomes a detective to help her grandma.
Yasmin is a little girl who loves to watch “Detective Hoo”, a TV program with an owl for a detective. When her grandma loses a couple of her things, Yasmin decides to don the mantle of her idol and starts investigating what might have happened.
I wasn’t aware that there is an entire series of chapter books based on the character of Yasmin. To a certain extent, this hindered my comprehension as I wasn’t aware of the little girl’s age or location. But one can read the book even without these details.
Yasmin and her family are Pakistanis, but the story is written in a neutral manner so it could be set anywhere. Even the scene that is in the classroom has only Yasmin in the illustrations. At the same time, the culture of the family clearly comes out through the clothes and the food.
The story is really sweet and brings out the curiosity and observations of the young detective well. There are a few questions at the end of the book to enable a discussion on the events that occurred. There’s also a glossary of the Urdu words used, fun facts about Pakistan and a special activity.
The illustrations are wonderfully cute. The content per page is quite limited and the language is easy enough for beginner readers to give this chapter book a go.
4 stars.
My thanks to Capstone, Picture Window Books, and NetGalley for the DRC of “Yasmin the Detective”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
This book was so easy to read for children and as an adult, I also enjoyed Yasmin's journey! The illustrations are beautiful and add a lot of depth to the story. This own voices children's book deserves the world! Spread the word and go buy it when it releases.
This book is perfect for kids that are starting to read a bit more. A really cute story with beautiful illustrations (I love the style). It includes questions at the end of it to talk about the story, a wonderful guide of Urdu words (which is a nice touch!) and a short guide of Pakistan. It's always great to learn about other cultures and it's wonderful to see representation from different parts of the world. Extra fun content: a DIY. Definitely a book recommended for the little ones!
I love a good children's book and this book delivered on everything a 'cozy mystery' for kids must do. The book follows Yasmin who likes this detective show and decides to become a detective when her grandmother starts losing her possessions. It was fun following the young detective and I felt like the author did a wonderful job of bringing Yasmin to life and I recommend it. I received a complimentary copy and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Another cute children picture book. It was fast, on to point and not boring. I love how it was both entertaining as a plot and informative of facts and the culture it speaks for.
The illustrations were colourful and fun. Really great work.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the E-ARC.
Yasmin uses her knowledge of birds that she has learned in school to help her solve a mystery at home. Children can see how even simple knowledge of a subject can help them solve mysteries and help their family or friends.
There is a glossary in the back for words the reader may not know.
Children who want chapter books but may not be quite ready for them would love this short and simple chapter book.
Loved this book! Huge fan of the Yasmin series. Her books are so beautiful and informative. My daughters absorb so much from them and love her!!
The tell if a children’s book is a winner is if the kids wants to read it over and over again! My seven year old daughter is a big fan of Yasmin and this one was no different. She asked to read it on my phone several times. She loved the mystery, the characters, especially Yasmin, and the adventure Yasmin goes on to solve the mystery. This book is the perfect book for my first grade little reader.
Cute as ever, in this Yasmin installment, Yasmin solves the mystery of her Nani's missing thimble and eyeglasses by applying what she has learned in school. The backmatter in these books is always helpful and interesting, and Yasmin's positive, can-do spirit is appealing. There are plenty of clues for young kids to predict the culprit and feel accomplished as they solve the mystery with Yasmin. The artwork is beautiful as always, by Hatem Aly. A definite purchase for my library.
Another lovely Yasmin title. Yasmin is spirited and spunky, the book is full of small cultural moments, and readers will learn a little bit about birds as well.
I enjoyed reading this mystery story that will appeal to younger children. Learning new things, figuring out a mystery are wonderful things for kids (and their parents) to read about. It's fun to follow Yasmin as she solves the mystery- with a little bit of birdwatching in it as well.
My first grader insisted on reviewing this one!
Me: Did you like this newest Yasmin book? Why?
Isobel: Yes, because Yasmin is a mystery solver. Stuff was disappearing everywhere.
Me: What was your favorite part?
Isobel: My favorite part was when Yasmin found the missing stuff. There was a button, glasses, and a thimble, and she found everything.
Me: Was anything you didn't like about this book?
Isobel: No! I like Yasmin because she does a lot of fun stuff.
*Isobel was very excited to learn what an ARC (advance reading copy) was, and has requested more Yasmin ARCs. I'll see what I can do! Thank you to Netgalley and Capstone/Picture Window Books for an ARC.
