This was a pretty good quick read for those maybe 10+. The monster and the shopkeeper was a bit creepy and the read was very forthcoming with the explanations. It would be a good read for those kids afraid of some stories. the art was very good as well.
3.5-4 Stars on this one
I agree with the other reviews that this has a great plot but its just way too short. at 33 pages everything moves very quickly and while it makes for a fun little bite-sized tale I think the idea deserves more. I'd love to see an installment in this world with real depth fleshed out in it.
I do understand this is made for a younger audience but kids like graphic novels/comics and can easily digest something a bit more fleshed out. The promise is there, it has a very Constantine or Inkheart type feel which are both great things and I can see something great coming from this universe later on.
It's quite short and lacks depth. The story isn't confusing. The concept is interesting, but there's not much to it. I didn't like the artwork style, but it has a Lovecraft mood and suits the nightmarish vibe of the story that the cover promises but doesn't deliver. The librarian is the most interesting character but we don't learn much, not enough to want to continue.
Although the plot was interesting, the story was simply too short for any real progression to take place. It's only 33 pages long and there is very little dialogue! I think this read would have been better if it were longer, therefore there would have been more depth to the actual plot of the novel (which was for Dace to outsmart the Oldest Trick and get back to reality). Where the action and most important part of the novel arrived, it only took 3 pages with a few lines for it to be all over, nothing really happened?...
On the positive side, the artwork is lovely and the idea of the Librarian being some sort of hero is fun and interesting!
