If you are ever in the mood for a fast paced, easy read pick this one up! I had such a hard time putting this one down, that I know I lost some sleep over it. This books follows three different couples as they embark on vacation. Each couple there for many different reasons. We find out shortly that one of the resort's staff waitresses has been found dead on the beach. We know someone is guilty, but who?
I flew through the pages of this book and I adored the resort setting. I was craving a summer read and this one fit the bill perfectly! Definitely a wild and fun ride that I think many thriller/mystery lovers will devour!
I absolutely loved this book! It kind of reminded me of the show, White Lotus, meaning it followed multiple couples who embarked on a trip to a fabulous resort on an island. I liked the premise of this book and the twists and turns that took place. I especially loved the ending, which I did not see coming! Would definitely recommend this book to others. I have now read all of Sue Watsons books.
CW: Rape, murder, infant loss, skimpy clothing descriptions
This thriller follows three couples, Sam and David, Daisy and Tom, and Becky and Josh, on their vacation at Fitzgeralds, a luxurious resort. The three couples seem to have it together on the outside. Looking closer, though, they all have murky pasts and secrets. As the novel unfolds, we get a deeper look into their lives and their backgrounds. (It is sometimes difficult to keep these couples straight, so a sticky note with brief descriptions will really help!) After Stella, the resort's beautiful waitress, is found murdered, no one is allowed to leave the island. This forced proximity adds a heightened level of suspense. Throughout the entire book, I swore I had the murderer figured out. The epilogues at the end made me scratch my head with my jaw open. I did not see any of that coming! This is a fast-paced read that you can finish pretty quickly. In summary, this thriller was addicting and well written. I found the ending shocking but also a bit confusing, so for that, I took off one star. It was still a fun thriller, though!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. Three couples are on holiday at a swanky resort on a secluded island where you literally have no cell service except for one area of the beach. The couples immediately hit it off and become friends as they get to know one another. When a body is found on the beach, the police will not allow anyone to leave the island resort. Everyone is on edge, but the three ladies grow closer and share their suspicions with one another. However, everyone has their own secrets. This story is told from three different perspectives of the three ladies, Sam, Becky and Daisy. As you follow their engagement with each other and their husbands, you will suspect each one of them. They all have their own personal issues and secrets, some of which were shocking once you learn of them.
The scene of this book sounds divine, but the beauty is marred by death. The resort still sounds like paradise! There are characters that you will love to hate and some you will just love. There are a lot of twists and turns that end with a jaw dropping conclusion that I really never saw coming. Sue Watson does a great job of leading you down a pathway where you will think you have it figured out only to realize you really do not have a clue! Sue Watson is also a master at "setting the scene" making the scene even more terrifying for you, as the reader! If you like a good old-fashioned whodunit mystery, you will inhale this book as I did!
A great story! I had no idea until the very end what was happening. So much suspense and I just couldn’t put it down! Some great twists and turns with some good well thought out characters. Loved the setting! Definitely recommend this one as a bit of pool side reading! Thanks for the ARC and really enjoyed it!
Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. Not going to lie I was more than a little excited to receive this ARC I have loved every single one of Sue Watson's thrillers so far and this one definitely did not disappoint! 3 couples holidaying at a resort, a staff member is found dead....everyone has secrets, no one can leave the resort whilst the death is being investigated... jealously...lies...then one of the 6 gets attacked....a claustrophobic thriller in all the best ways. I couldn't put this one down, twisty, atmospheric...everything I want in a thriller! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #suewatson #theresort #netgalley #goodreads #litsy #thestorygraph #tea_sipping_bookworm #bookqueen #bookstagram #thriller
You've been excited about this getaway for months - at last, a chance to connect with your husband at a secluded island resort. But when he unexpectedly calls you from the beach, you hear the urgency in his voice. Something is very wrong. The beautiful waitress from the restaurant last night has been found lying dead in the sand. And the police want to question your husband about it.
The story focuses on three couples - Dave and Sam, Tom and Daisy, and Josh and Becky, who are all staying at the expensive island resort, Fitzgerald's. They are there for different reasons, they were all strangers who quickly became friends. But a suspicious death brings them even closer.
The pace is steady throughout but there was quite a bit of repetition of the same conversation. when there is under 300 hundred pages, the repetitiveness became annoying. Apart from that, I couldn't wait to see how this story was going to unfold. Sam and Becky's perspectives were told in the first person whilst Daisy's point of view was told in the third. I didn't like any of the couples who were all flawed in different ways. I took half a star off for the repetition.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #SueWatson for my ARC of #TheResort in exchange for an honest review.
What do you do when you're stranded on an island while you're supposed to be on vacation. You bond with the strangers that are experiencing it with you. But can you trust them? Follow three married couples through the twists and turns of tragedy after one of the resort employees is murdered. Tons of drama, likable (and also unlikeable) characters, and unpredictable twists. I'm going to have to read all of Sue Watson's novels now!
Fitzgerald's is an exclusive luxurious hotel that promises perfection and escape. When Sam, Daisy and Becky all visit with their husbands, they expect a place to relax, reconnect and perhaps romance. What they don't expect is a murder...
I'm a fan of the author Sue Watson and like her other psychological thrillers, this book doesn't disappoint! As in her other work, as a reader you constantly feel as if the threads of the intertwining stories are about to make sense and then she cleverly adds in an addition loop that changes everything. This is the same in 'The Resort', a book about three couples and their secrets.
Sam and David are honeymooners, newly wed and still getting to know each other. Kind and naive, Sam at first is in awe of her surroundings and her luck in finding David after many years searching for the one. But does she really know the real David behind the charm and wealth?
Becky seems to be controlled by her husband Josh. Controlling her drink choices, keeping her locked away in her room and avoiding socialising with the other guests, Josh does however find time to fit in his runs around the hotel day and night. Why is he so keen to keep Becky out of sight?
Daisy and Tom arranged their break to reconnect after receiving heart breaking news. But is Fitzgerald's the place to remind them of their feelings for one another or have the secrets they are hiding from each other created a gulf too wide to overcome?
As a young waitress is found dead, the three couples find safety and comfort in each other. But how well can you know people you meet on holiday? Will they be new friends or the latest victims?
I really enjoyed this book - it certainly was true to the genre in that it kept me guessing right until the end. Each character has their secrets and as the narratives unravel you find yourself questioning their motives and reasons, who has lied and who they can trust. It will keep you guessing until the end.
I reviewed an advanced review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you to Netgalley and Sue Watson for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I have loved Sue Watson's previous books but found this one to be a bit confusing with so many different stories interlinked. However, I found myself intrigued with the story and desperately wanting to learn the outcome.
Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC
At the fancy Fitzgerald resort on an island close to Plymouth three couples are all there for different reasons. Josh and Becky are there because Becky has cancer and he wants to spend as much time as you can with the woman his love for so long. Daisy and Josh are there trying to get back to where they were before they lost their beloved newborn son James and finally say him and David are there on their honeymoon. They all have their issues but some more than others and when a waitress named Stella is murdered the cop sequestered them to the resort. they say familiarity breeds contempt and when they are all asked to stay on the island in the biggest heat wave Some of them take it better than others and some of them take it worse. Josh is caught lying to Becky David biggest Hubby😍 is some of them take it better than others and some of them take it worse. Josh is caught lying to Becky David‘s biggest hobby is to put his new wife down and make her feel less than she actually is and when Daisy is almost murdered at the same place on the clip for Stella, At first Tom is very supportive and even decks God to let her wake up and stay with him, but then when the police accused Daisy of Stella‘s murder mistakenly he acts as a P daughter. When it comes to who could be the murderer it really could be anyone including the other bartender by the swimming pool but who is it? No this is a question I till wanted to know. I thought I knew and then I doubted it and then I thought it was someone else and then I was like no it wasn’t him but then when I found out who it was I was blown away! I usually I would read a book like this all the way through but I had to pause it and force myself to wait until I can finish the whole thing an old man was it worth it. This book is so good I cannot wait to read more books by Sue Watson is there anything close to this one I’ll be in heaven. I received this book by net galley and I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind to dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own. #NickGally, #TheResort, #SueWatson, #Awesome
In this excellent Agatha Christie-esque mystery/thriller, a pretty young waitress at an exclusive, secluded island resort off the British coast is found dead, and the guests are required to remain in place while the police investigate. Three couples on holiday become friends during the lockdown. The story is told from the alternating perspective of the three wives, Sam, Becky and Daisy, each of whom has reason to believe her husband was attracted to the young woman and could be a suspect in her death. This is also a story of relationships, complete with secrets, suspicions, and betrayal. I found the characters very engaging. The plot is clever and moves at a good pace.

The Resort by Sue Watson is an island thriller that would make the perfect beach read! The story revolves around three couples who are at a vacation getaway at an island resort. It seems like paradise. It's the perfect chance to relax and for the couples to enjoy a great time together. Unfortunately, when someone turns up dead, everyone becomes a suspect. Who killed the waitress at the restaurant? And why?
Here is a gripping excerpt from the Prologue:
"As I step onto the boat, a sudden breeze catches my hat and though I try to grab it, I’m not quick enough. With tears in my eyes, I watch the beautiful Gucci boater tied with grosgrain ribbon, as it floats further and further away.
I try not to cry as I take my seat on deck, opposite a woman with searching eyes and alarm in her voice.
‘Oh no, is that your hat?’ she asks.
I nod, avoiding her searching eyes.
‘Was it expensive?’
‘Very,’ I reply, wishing she’d shut up.
I take my phone from my bag in an attempt to avoid speaking to her. I’m surprised to see a signal. We’ve been shut off from the rest of the UK for the past few weeks, and it feels strange now, almost scary to be able to speak to the outside world. I don’t know what to say. What can I say? Impulsively, I decide to call my sister; I’m tired and tearful, I need to hear a familiar voice."
Overall, The Resort is a typical vacation thriller that will delight readers looking for something that doesn't require too much thinking. One highlight of this book is the location, which is perfect for readers looking for an escape. I took off 1 star, because I thought it was kind of confusing following three couples from a 3rd-person perspective and alternating chapters between each couple. There also weren't any thrillers or major reveals. Trigger warning: sexual assault. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of thrillers in general, I recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in June!
I don't think this one was for me! I'm not a big fan of bashing on a book knowing all the work that goes into writing, but this so-called psychological thriller fell very flat for me. This locked-room-all-stuck-on-an-island story is told from multiple POVs, but the characters don't have their own "voice", so it often got confusing as to who was "talking" in a particular chapter, I kept of going back to the beginning of the chapter to situate myself. Also, it's a small thing (and so easy to fix), but the similarities in many of the character names made it even more confusing (Becky-Daisy/Daisy-David/Sam-Stella). There were a lot a plot holes, and the investigation conducted by the police is risible at best. Also, there is a lot of empty dialogue. The characters were all shallow, underdeveloped, and not one of them was relatable or likable. They are all in shaky shallow relationships where the women don't stand for themselves and husbands have very little respect for them. Check your trigger warnings (domestic abuse, infertility, sexual abuse, etc.). The premice was really good, just poorly executed.
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion from NetGalley and Bookoutu
Sue Watson is one of my favourite authors in her genre and The Resort is my new favourite of hers! I have never read a book with so many twists that I never saw coming. A fantastic and highly clever plot. One I will recommended to friends.
Ultimately, I really liked this book but having three sets of male-female couples with normal names as the main characters made it really difficult to keep all the characters straight and resulted in this being kind of a rough read for me. The plot and the writing were excellent (as always with this author) but I really wish the differences between the couples were a lot stronger so you could learn them right off the top and not have to keep reminding yourself.
PRE-ORDER this book right now!! IT IS SO GOOD. This is my first book by Sue Watson and now I am HOOKED. I am still in SHOCK AND AWE at the ending. What a well thought out book full of mystery, twist, turns and suspense wrapped into a beautifully written novel.
I loved the setting of The Resort. It takes place at the Fitzgerald, the glamorous 1920’s era hotel in the middle of the Atlantic. This beautiful, luxurious resort has fallen amongst tragedy and the story unfolds through 3 different couples on holiday and each of the wives points of view.
Read if you like:
Solid whodunit mysteries
Unpredictable endings
Rich details
Multiple points of view
Sue Watson is one of my favourite authors. Not only are her thrillers fast, pacy and exciting but she is an absolute hoot to chat with! So naturally I had high hopes for her latest thriller set in an art deco hotel on a remote island off the coast of Devon. It had all the hallmarks of the Queen of Crime herself, Agatha Christie. Secluded island, an isolated beach, rugged cliff edges and a handful of suspects. In fact, the very setting for this mysterious thriller is inspired by none other than Burgh Island just off the coast of Devon...the very inspiration for Ms Christie herself and where she wrote both "And Then There Were None" and "Evil Under the Sun" - both of which were the two books I was reminded of whilst reading THE RESORT. And it did indeed have a little modern-day Christie-esque feel to it all although it lacked her climatic endings where the suspects were gathered having to endure all possible scenarios before the villain is finally revealed. To step into the shadow of Ms Christie and walk where she had once done so, Sue Watson gave herself some very big shoes to fill.
The prologue opens the way for an intriguing tale to be told as the unnamed narrator watches the island and its majestic hotel disappear from the boat as they make their way to the mainland. It leaves the reader wondering from what was she escaping and what really happened there?
The story then dives into that of three couples - Sam and David, Daisy and Tom, Becky and Josh - each who are respectively introduced through the narratives of the wives. Each of them find themselves at the exclusive island resort, Fitzgerald's, for various reasons - a honeymoon, for healing and to celebrate an anniversary. But not all is well with these couples as they each begin to crumble in the privacy of their rooms whilst maintaining a facade for everyone else.
The couples inevitably become friends - well, the women do and the men basically tolerate the new-found friendships - and end up spending quite a lot of time together in the bar or around the pool. But each of the women also have their insecurities and systematically accuse their husbands of flirting with the friendly and very pretty waitress/barmaid/yoga instructor. None of them women trust their husbands very much either as each of them watch and wonder what their men are really up to.
Then one morning, Daisy is searching for a decent signal to make some phone calls with Sam in tow, and they wander further up the beach in the hope of gaining the longed-for mobile reception. But instead the women discover more than they bargained for when they stumble across the battered body of Stella, their young, friendly and pretty waitress/barmaid/yoga instructor.
All at once, Sam is hysterical while Daisy calls for help. The police arrive and set up a crime scene and question the guests as they endeavour to uncover the truth about what happened the night before when Stella met her untimely death. Was it a suicide? Murder? Or a tragic accident? Rumours begin to fly around and fingers are pointed. Each of the women begin to doubt their husbands, none of whom were with them at the time of the murder. And each of the husbands begin to act suspiciously by all accounts. It's difficult to know who is lying and who is telling the truth.
A very different style of thriller for Ms Watson, in the vein of Agatha Christie but without the same impact, THE RESORT focused more on the marriages and relationships of the three couples than the mystery itself. In fact, Stella's death was more of a subplot to the main one in which the wives spent most of the time suspecting their husbands of something to do with it without the sense of doom or spine-tingling chills. I was more irritated with them more than anything. Sam, a hairdresser who, after a whirlwind romance, married a charming handsome and rich man who constantly puts her down; Daisy, the beautiful and successful magazine art director grieving the death of her unborn child with her younger husband; and Becky, the quiet 40 year old mother who has come to the island with her husband, who controls everything she does and eats, to celebrate their twentieth wedding anniversary. Each of these women are irritating. Sam is incredibly naive but stupid. Daisy continues to push her husband away when they should be reconnecting. And Becky appears to be weak at the hand of her controlling husband. And then men are equally irritating. Except David. He is the most arrogant, rude, self-absorbed, conceited manipulative prig who is so far up his own...well, you get the picture.
As the story goes, the dialogue is heavy as is the to-ing and fro-ing of arguements between the couples. He said, she said, he gets drunk, she storms off. Too much conversation about their respective love and sex lives than the impending sense of doom or palpable tension I was looking forward to as in many other Ms Watson's previous thrillers. And while the action does pick up a little towards the end, the twists and reveals come out of nowhere as there really were no clues or hints peppered throughout to lead the reader to any sort of conclusion. To say I was hoodwinked is an understatement...there was nothing to really lead me in any direction except to the bedroom to partake in another sexual marathon with Sam and David, who seems to fix everything with a bit of "how's your father".
The concept was clever, the promise of it was intriguing, but the execution failed and I really hate to say that because I love Sue and her thrillers. And I feel awful saying that I was a little disappointed with this one. I would really have preferred more thrills, more clues and more tension and suspense and less drama and monologuing between the couples. Even by the end, I was still left with more questions than answers as everything wrapped up with lightning speed, it seemed, and one character just sort of disappeared into the ether with a vague explanation in passing but after the song and dance they had caused throughout, I felt they deserved a bit more of an ending rather than a passing mention.
I normally love and thoroughly enjoy Sue Watson's thrillers but sadly THE RESORT was not a favourite. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either.
However many have loved it where I have not, and you might just enjoy it more than I did.

This had an entertaining premise but I felt like there were too many competing storylines. This would have been better for me as an audio books with a couple of different narrators.
Surprises galore is how I would describe this book. Three couples, who previously did not know each other, go to a posh resort for different reasons. They end of getting acquainted and began spending time together. Stella, the very attractive server is found dead at the bottom of the cliffs and the men all seem to be good suspects. This is a real whodunit! I did enjoy this quick read although it was a little confusing when all three couples were together trying to figure out who was saying what. The characters are all very unlikeable except for one of the women.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book.
