I've been reading Kate's writing since her blog while her husband was in medical school. She is phenomenal and I am honored to have been able to see her grow from then until now. I love the way she captures womanhood and motherhood in such a raw, truthful way that honors everything that women are currently experiencing in this political climate. She is amazing and her writing just gets better and better!

Poetry is such a suggestive art form that I hate to review it. I will say that I enjoyed the poems in this book, and if poetry is something you enjoy, pick this up! The poem about Late Summer In A Global Pandemic is one of my favorite ones from the book!

Kate Baer remains one of my most favorite contemporary poets, and And Yet is a gift to readers and women everywhere.

And Yet starts strong and is filled with beautiful poetry. There lacks a cohesive through line that made putting it down easy and picking it back up undesirable.

So, I liked this book. But I didn't love it. It wasn't anything revolutionary. Also, I know my review is coming a bit late but even though 2020 was only 3 years ago, this book feels so dated. My favorite poem was MILF.

Kate Baer's poems are spare but pack a wallop of emotions. I found myself racing through the book only to stop abruptly at a poem that seemed to reach straight into my life.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to get around to reading And Yet. Even though only a few of the poems really spoke to me, I enjoyed them all. Maybe it would have resonated with me more if I was a mother (like many of the 5 star reviewers seem to be). I think I'll have to give her other books of poetry a chance (one is even already marked as TBR on Goodreads) as I liked her style of poetry in And Yet.

She continues to be my favorite poet in existence. I adore everything she writes and always buy multiple copies as gifts for the women in my life.

Thank you Netgalley for my copy of "And Yet" in exchange for an honest review.

And Yet is my second book of poetry from Kate Baer. I struggled to connect with this collection a bit. I found the first of Kate's work to be poignant and provoking where I could find many points of connection. This book felt a bit more focused on marriage, motherhood, and angst in a way that I felt disconnected to. I do think it will connect to many people! I may just not have been the right audience.

Although I didn’t personally connect with much of this connection, I do believe it is timely and will likely resonate with a variety of readers.

Thank you to Harper Perennial and NetGalley.

Baer’s newest poetry collection brings an honest range of emotions to the experiences of womanhood, parenthood, humanity. A few of my favorites include “Burnout” and “Bliss.”

Over the past couple years, I've been reading more poetry but to be honest, I'm finding it harder and harder to figure out how to review. Poetry is so personal - how can I tell you if you'll love the same poetry collections that I do? How do I even know if I'll love these poems the same way if I read them in 3 weeks or 3 months or 3 years?

What I can tell you is that I find Kate Baer's poetry very accessible and I marked many poems within this collection that I want to return to again and again. I want to put these poems somewhere that I will stumble across them when I don't expect it.

From the poem Idea on page 38:
"I will love and be loved. Save and be saved
a thousand times. I will let the want into
my body, bless the heat under my skin.
My life, I will not waste it. I will enjoy this life."

Thank you to Harper Perennial for the gifted book to review. I recommend it if you are a poetry reader or if you're not yet but have been considering it.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC. As always, these poems provide the author's interesting take on her life and the world. These poems are solid and many are lovely gems that really made me think and feel.

"no I did not / will not / could not know what it is to be a good mother when mother is already heavy enough"

I absolutely adored this collection of poems by Kate Baer! And Yet is Kate Baer's second full-length collection of poetry. A feminist reflection on motherhood and gender, this collection was deeply comforting and put words to so much of what it is to be a mother in this moment in time.

Thanks so much to Kate Baer and Harper Perennial for this ARC through NetGalley! And Yet is available now.

I enjoyed this clever, moving collection without even knowing that Baer had a previous collection, her debut, What Kind of Woman, which came out during the pandemic and spent weeks on the NYTimes bestseller list! I then went and found that first book and liked it even better than this one -- though both were excellent and unusual in their frank feminism, down-to-earth conversational tone, candor, humor, and unapologetic commitment to both motherhood and valuing her sense of self. Some of her poems are small domestic complaints that carry a theme of larger discontents. I highly recommend any poetry collection by Baer, as all of her poetry is short, accessible, pithy and thought-provoking.

I also LOVED the cover of this collection, which I first spotted on Netgalley. I am grateful to Netgalley, the author and Harper Perennial for providing me with an advance reader copy of this excellent collection.

This collection came highly acclaimed so I was looking forward to diving in and can definitely see the appeal. Personally though, it was just ok for me. Not to say that the book wasn't well-written, but I didn't connect with it as much as I wanted to, which comes as no surprise to me since most of them revolve around motherhood.

There are a few hit pieces here but overall none of the poems stood out enough for me to highlight anything. Nevertheless, I appreciate the sentiments and themes expressed in this book, particularly those about womenhood and gender roles and how sometimes we are just so done.

Kate Baer has done it again! This is her third book of poetry (and the third I've read) and it might be the best one yet. I dog eared almost every single page because all of her poems were just THAT good. The way she's able to speak to the experience of living in this world, particularly as a woman, is unmatched. A handful of her poems speak to motherhood, and even though I'm not a mother they still resonate with me. Even if you aren't a huge poetry fan, give this a try. It might make you one.

This was a dnf for me. Concept was beyond me. I wasn't grasping the thread and themes. Which really bummed me out. Individually coming across her poems they resonate. But I couldn't understand the greater motif for the collection and that bothered me.
