I loved the found family that was present throughout the book. I also enjoyed Bee as a main character.
loved the art style & the storyline of Bee & her mom. the found family trope really shined in this one & I enjoyed the play on Peter Pan.
Such a cute story! Absolutely adored every part of it! A big fan of Peter pan retellings and this was a good twist on it!
This was such a cute little graphic novel retelling of Peter Pan (adjacent) story! I wish it were longer but I know it wasn’t supposed to be. I loved the illustrations and the storyline! Thank you netgalley!!
The ARC is pretty impossible to read. The text and images don’t line up or aren’t on the same pages and I can’t tell who is saying what. The illustrations are beautiful and from what I could figure out, the story seems fun. I wish this one had only paper ARCs or a different format to the ebook because it was unenjoyable as is.
I loved the story, the world building and meeting the different characters. I felt completely immersed in the story and couldn't stop reading it.
This book was ok. Nothing spectacular really. It was cute and the illustrations were pretty but in my opinion it wasn’t very memorable.
Unfortunately, Neverlanders didn’t hook me. I was intrigued by the characters, but the humor didn’t make me laugh. Pacing in graphic novels sometimes feels uneven, and I didn’t find the characterization I was looking for in the book. Overall, I think this was a case of “It’s not my cup of tea," and I can see why Neverlanders would appeal to other readers! I would recommend to fans of found family and twists on fairytales.
Thank you to Penguin Teen for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This was my first graphic novel from NetGalley and I LOVED it! The art was stunning and the story was incredible.
Book feature!
Graphic novel Neverlanders
By: Tom Taylor and Jon Sommariva
Special thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Teen to gifting me the digital copy of this book.
Unfortunately due to some major formatting issues prior to publication, I was unable to read the book to do a full review, but I did want to feature it. If you love graphic novels or Peter Pan retellings (or both), check this one out!
From Amazon: "Bee and her fellow runaways are their own found family. So when a stranger named Paco saves her life, Bee invites him to join their crew, thinking he’s another lost teen. Someone else the world has overlooked. The truth is Paco’s not just a lost teen, he’s a Lost Boy from Neverland. And he needs Bee and the others to come back with him.
When the group is then spirited away by a foul-mouthed Tinker Bell, they discover that Neverland is not some fun-filled hideaway. It's a war zone under siege by a horde of pirates with a merciless new leader who will stop at nothing to steal the land’s magic. Tink leads a fairy army that barely holds them at bay. Peter Pan is gone. And rest of the Lost Boys have been killed. Paco is all that remains . . . but he hopes that this group of teens will become the new Lost Ones. These young runaways may be Neverland’s only hope—but they’re about to learn that it’ll take a lot more than happy thoughts to win a war."

“This is Neverland. An island just for us. For the young. Where we can do whatever we want.”

First things first, the art style in this novel is breathtaking! Taking an existing fantasy world and adding a more edgy steampunk theme, Neverlanders is filled with well developed characters and a ton of heart. There were a few plot holes that needed a bit more building, but this is the first of a series so hopefully future works will expand on these areas. If you like the found family trope, my absolute favorite, definitely check this one out!! I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of this series!
I recommend this one to anyone looking for a fast-paced and gritty graphic novel, fans of “Peter Pan” and “Big Hero 6,” and those wanting a unique take on the classic Peter Pan story.
Neverlanders is a fun graphic novel reimagining the Peter Pan classic story. The fresh take on the lost boys is so fun and adds some more true depth to the story. I wouldn't recommend this for very little but it was a lot of fun and older kids would be perfect for it!
Neverlanders is a brilliant re-imaging of the Peter Pan tale that leaves you wanted more. And yes, there will be more!
I love this graphic novel reimagining of the Peter Pan story. This is a fresh take on the story of Neverland and the lost boys. In this case they are called the lost ones. They are kids that have lost their way and their hope.
This story follows Bee and her group of fellow runaways after they take in a new kid named Paco. Paco helped save Luz at the train station so Bee invites him to come live with them. Once they get back to their camp, Paco reveals he is a lost boy and with the help of a warrior like Tinkerbell, he whisks the group off to Neverland. What he failed to mention is that Neverland is at war, and Paco needs Bee and her friends to help him fight.
This is such a cute book, but be warned it is not for little kids as there is adult language. The art is gorgeous! Each page is a work of art. I’m not sure if this is going to be a series or if it’s a standalone, but the ending leaves it open for more. Which I hope is the case, because I’m not ready to let these characters go just yet.
4.5 stars. this was a really nice, short read! i actually went into this graphic novel thinking that it was a middle grade novel because the style and tone of some of the characters felt a little juvenile to me, but then the first gorey scene happened and i was like oh. oh yeah. this is definitely young adult. i think for a graphic novel of this length the characters and setting were deep enough, but at some points, the characterization was pretty thin. again i think this is because of the length since less pages and also less text means less time to flesh out characters.
thank you to netgalley for an eARC of this book! all opinions are my own.
I really wanted to like this one. I thought that the premise was super interesting and it was a great take on the classic Peter Pan story. I loved that the kids were basically fending for themselves and were then called to Neverland to stop the pirate adults from taking their island. There is a couple twists throughout the story, but I think this was a bit rushed for a one off graphic novel. I wish that the world and characters would have been a bit more fleshed out!
I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see a different take on Peter Pan story with BIPOC characters and kids being bad as*ses
I would die for Gracie, who just wants to be a lizard. This is not an exaggeration.
The art here is lovely and effective; the story is compelling; I've become very very attached to this cast of characters in such a short space. I'm not entirely sure the aesthetic of junkyard-punk war-zone Peter Pan entirely works for me, but I still read the entirety of Neverlanders in a sitting with a smile on my face. Having read and enjoyed some of the team's other work (I'm a big Superman: Son of Kal-El fan), I was glad to see Neverlanders holds up. It's a little trite, a little blandly colorful/children's cartoon (which is not inherently a bad thing, but I do feel there is some more untapped potential in this world), and the climax and twists at the end are... a lot, but I've really enjoyed it, and will read just about every Peter Pan story sent my way.
I cute reimagine of Peter Pan that anyone can enjoy. Definitely for the younger crowd as most of the plot is predictable, but even though I wasn’t the target audience I still found myself looking to turn the page to read more. Also I really loved the artwork.
this is now one of my favorite graphic novels that I have ever read. the artwork is so beautiful and colorful, it just makes the book very excited to read. Also the characters were so well developed in such a short amount of time, especially their relationships with each other. If you like found family, this book will be perfect!
I enjoyed this! I guess it would be considered a continuation AND adaptation of the OG Peter Pan. I really liked the take on Tink, she was a foul-mouthed delight. The found-family of kiddos who were at the center were very sweet, but I wish they had a bit more to them. I could see this making a super fun TV series.
