I didn't love this book. It was okay, but I expected better. I'd prefer more books like her recent "No One Can Hear You Scream". Guess I set the bar too high. But I still think I'll try more books from A.B. Whelan

I tried multiple times to get into this book, but really couldn’t get hooked by it. Unfortunately, this was a DNF for me.

Thank you Burbank Books and Netgalley for this arc. AB Whelan took a big part of this novel near my home. I was really glad to get to know a lot about Hungar. It was a mystery of the time and place. I was scared and curious at the same time.

How well do you really know your spouse? Clint asks himself that question when his wife disappears after a trip back to her home country of Hungary. He flies to Hungary in order to find her, and discovers he may not know her at all. The plot was full of twists with many sad incidents. Overall it was a great read. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.

I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher as an ARC.
I found it difficult to read. It rambled on and and and on...
I read the first half of the book then skimmed through until the end.

When Nelli Horvath met her husband, Clint, and moved to America, she expected to leave her life, and all of its secrets, behind in Hungary. But twenty years later, Nelli and Clint are living in Las Vegas with their son, Ryan, when Nelli starts to receive threatening messages, putting her life, and her child’s life, in jeopardy. When Nelli gets an invitation to a high school reunion, she sees this as an oppourtunity to return home to Hungary, and put an end once and for all to the secrets she left behind. Clint begins to worry when Nelli doesn’t contact him after her arrival, or for days afterward, but as he tries to investigate her disappearance, the information he uncovers makes him question how well he really knew his wife.
A.B. Whelan’s “Big Little Secrets” has a storyline that has been done before by many other authors of this genre but what makes Whelan’s book slightly more creative is the fact that most of the novel takes place in Hungary. As Clint travels to the foreign nation, the reader experiences Hungary through his eyes, and is able to fully grasp the rarely explored, ex-Soviet-ruled country as a newcomer would. I always enjoy being able to experience new places through reading, and Hungary was a new one for me.
Clint and Nelli are decent characters, a seemingly innocuous married couple, living an opulent life in Las Vegas and raising their young son. They are easy to relate to and easy to connect with, and I wanted to keep reading through to the end, hopeful for a happy ending.
Although there are some parts of the novel that read slow, especially as various parts of the Hungarian landscape and lifestyle are explained, overall the plot was suspenseful and gripping. “Big Little Secrets” takes an overdone plot, brings it to life with a unique setting, and provides a heartbreaking but complete ending. This is my first novel by Whelan, and I’m intrigued to find out where her other novels will take me.

A digital ARC of this book was provided to me by NetGalley and Burbank Books. The opinions are my own and freely given.

This book alternates point of views of Nelli and Clint. Nelli grew up in Hungary and something happened while she was a teenager that she just can't get over and has never told her husband Clint about. Clint seems too wrapped up in making money and when Nelli tells him she is going to Hungary for a reunion, he lets her go and doesn't really question anything.

Then while Clint is in Mexico, he realizes that it has been days since he has been able to talk with his wife. I almost feel sorry for Clint because he is beating himself up for not knowing his wife's history, but at the same time I am disgusted that he didn't try to get to know her past, family, friends

First of all, I am very torn on this one. Parts of it were fast paced and kept my interest, while other parts just felt slow. There was at times too much description of the surroundings. Clint even wonders why Daniel is telling him all this information.

Once he is Hungary he yells at the police and feels like they are not doing their job investigating her disappearance, but he didn't even know that she was missing. Also, I understand trying to find out what happened to your wife, but it seems like he isn't spending time with his son and Ryan needs him. Clint is leaving him in the care of his grandparents too much. I had a problem with "the gang" of Nelli's friends and how some of them were willing to break the law and put themselves in dangerous situations. The males all banded together, while the females just seemed to disappear.

I tried really hard, but I just couldn't connect with Clint.

Once the fast-paced parts came, it was really good and all I wanted to know is what happened to Nelli and why, but some of it just didn't hold me attention. This was a good storyline but seemed like it took just a little too long to get to it.
Thank you NetGalley, Burbank Books and A.B. Whelan.

Ahh I loved this one! It was my first A.B Whelan book and it won't be my last. I have heard such great things about the author and I knew as soon as I saw this on Netgalley I had to request it.

I found the story really entertaining and I feel it hooked me in from the get go. I liked the pace and the character development.

One thing I do feel was a negative was the ending and I feel one or two more chapters would have sealed the book up better.

All in all this was a great read that I just had to continue until I knew what happened.

4/5

Nelli moved from Hungary to America 20 years ago and is enjoying life in Las Vegas, Nevada with her husband and son. When she gets an invitation to her high school reunion, she takes a trip to Hungary. While there, she goes missing. Her husband, Clint, travels to Hungary to try to find her. He discovers secrets about his wife’s life and begins to wonder how well he really knows her.

What an exciting read! I love atmospheric thrillers and the visit descriptions in this book of Hungary were so good.

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC!

I have just read Big Little Secrets by Author A.B. Whelan

This is a thriller that takes place in Hungary and the US. The main character Nelli Horvath who was born in Hungary and is now married to an American, and they have a young son together and are living in Las Vegas.

Nelli gets an invitation for her 20th high school reunion, and then suddenly tells her husband one day that she has a flight to catch, and she and their son Ryan will be leaving in hours to go to Hungary for the reunion.

This is the first that her husband Clint has heard about the reunion.

This is also the last time Clint will see Nelli.

A pretty good book in my opinion, however a bit slow at times, and a little unbelievable as well at times.

Thank you to NetGalley, the Author and Xpresso Book Tours for my advanced copy to read and review.
