This is fully not a book for me. I am in the wrong mindset for this book and consuming this felt like punishment.
There was nothing about this book that I liked. It was a bunch of words and babbling. There was no story. I have no idea what the author was trying to say. I couldn't read any more than about 50 pages.
I really enjoyed this incisive, dreamy, heartbreaking book, which considers the protagonist's experiences with race and racism in Germany and in the United States, while at the same time she works through the particular circumstances of her life, which include a turbulent childhood with a family who loved her very imperfectly.
There are a lot of exquisite moments in this book, both in terms of insights and prose, and while the recursive structure was at times a bit difficult to follow (and occasionally seemed needlessly complex), overall it added nuance and heft to the protagonist's emotional journey.
I am so glad I was able to spend a few days with 1,000 Coils of Fear. The experience of reading this novel is like nothing else I've read.
