Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for giving me this book to review.

This was a sweet little book and is told more through short stories of daily life which meant that the book could be put down and picked up at any point and I didn't have to necessarily worry about how long I left the book. The art is cute and the humour isn't bad so I definitely recommend it if you want a pick me up or a very chill read.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this odd premise, but I was pleasantly surprised! I've always loved slice of life manga, and this was absolutely adorable. The little penguin is so cute, and always goes above and beyond to please his oblivious master. The artwork, while simple, is pleasing to look at it. If you're looking for something funny, light, and happy, this is the manga for you!
Slice of life themed. Short stories about a penguin and human. Often the penguin caring for the human. Doing chores, cooking, cleaning, and general housework.
This was... oddly adorable. There's really no context to the story. Why is there a penguin? Why is it sound household chores? Why has it taken in caring for a human?
Not sure exactly who the targeted audience might be, but I guess it was cute...?

This was such a quick and easy read.
There isn’t a big overarching plot but you get invested in the daily adventures of Pen (and my heart goes to that poor penguin whose efforts are often overlooked).
I would recommend this manga as a palate cleanser in between big books or more serious reads cause it will make you chuckle and help you relax. Definitely don't go in expecting a convoluted plot.
Very cute and funny manga. I would recommend this manga to fans of “The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again, Today”. Both mangas feature a pet who takes care of their owners.
I will be entirely honest, I'm not sure who the intended audience for this is. We have a penguin and his owner. The penguin is good at everything. The owner doesn't appreciate the penguin's efforts. Repeat. I could see reading this occasionally online or on a blog, but compiled into a book makes me question why this was created. The penguin is cute, but the humor is repetitive. I don't see where this can possibly go afterwards.
More of a 2.5 from me, because I can see this appealing to maybe...older folks or children, but the slice of life gag humor is not for me.
This book was adorable. Pen is so cute, and I loved seeing them go about their day and trying to be good to their owner who doesn't even notice. It's so cute kind of a slice-of-life story but with the fantastical pet penguin element.
This was cute, but it wasn't quite as fun as I was hoping. Mainly, my issue was with how irritating and entitled Pen's human 'master' was. (I understand this is the origin of much of the humor, I was just hoping for something a bit sweeter and just generally 'nicer,' but I'm sure many will love this.) I wanted Pen to smack him...
This was so cute, I can't *sobs*
Penguin & house follows the daily lives of Pen-chan (the penguin) and Hayakawa (his human). While Pen is neat and organized, Hayakawa is a lazy student and Pen is trying to make his life easier by cooking him a meal or folding his laundry.
The art style is pretty simple and interesting. I enjoyed reading about Pen-chan and Hayakawa, they made me smile after a long week of studying.
I would recommend this manga to everyone, and I hope that there’ll be more volumes because it's just adorable and has a lot of potential.
I love Pen-chan! Penguin & House volume 1 introduces us to Pen the Penguin and Hayakawa the Human. Hayakawa is a university student who lives with his pet, Pen. What’s impressive is that Pen is so amazing at household chores! He cleans, cooks, and looks out for Hayakawa. He’s such a neat and kind Penguin!
First things first, this manga is cutely drawn. Pen is so endearing. I can’t say the same for Hayakawa. I feel like the mangaka is trying to draw out the humor from Pen’s suffering every time Hayakawa is being indifferent or obtuse. It doesn’t make me laugh, and it just makes me frustrated on Pen’s behalf. Even Hayakawa’s friends think he treats Pen unfairly. In some chapters, we can see that he loves Pen, and he’s just inherently nonchalant about a lot of stuff. That still doesn’t make up for the fact that he’s an idiot most of the time. I’m still going to continue reading the future volumes, though. For Pen-chan! And I’m really hoping Hayakawa has some character development.
3.5 stars
Thank you once again, NetGalley and Kodansha, for the eARC.
ARC Copy...I though it was a cute yet funny slice of life manga. I love how the penguin is so loyal to his owner and very proper in manners...helps he is a wiz in the kitchen which his owner seems to need help with at times. It was cute to watch the interactions between the two.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for sending an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
OH. MY. GOSH! This was just the cutest manga! Pen's facial expressions made me laugh so hard throughout this slice of lifestyle manga. I loved the dynamic of all of Owner's friends and him with Pen and I can't wait to read the second installment of the Penguin & House when it debuts. Highly recommend it if you'd like a lighthearted, slice-of-life-style manga!
Penguin & House is a slice of life manga where a college student has a penguin named Pen as a... pet? Roommate? Nanny? Pen is not limited by any labels. Pen's character design is neither the most realistic nor the cutest penguin I've seen in manga, but it works for this story. Volume 1 was wholesome enough that I think it would be safe to buy this for your school library or any young readers in your life. (I received a free copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.)
A quick, quirky read with adorable illustrations that are enjoyable, but you do also feel a bit frustrated with Pen's constant attempts to make his owner happy, but it rarely ever gets acknowledged by him and he usually finds a way of messing it up. And it happens constantly throughout the book.
Obviously, the whole draw of the book is Pen the Penguin, who you immediately love from the moment you look at the cover. There's no explanation yet for why this penguin is here or why it is so good at cooking and cleaning, but that's just part of the fun. The human characters are secondary but likable enough that they don't get in the way of the penguin shenanigans.
This can be read entirely in one sitting so it's easily digestible and cute so will definitely check out the volumes to come.
3.75 stars!!
oh my god, this manga is so cute!! i request that i have my very own Pen !! please !!
This manga follows pentaro and his owner’s every day life. Pentaro helps him get through the day like cooking his meals and doing his laundry.
This was such a cute and fun read and I finished it within minutes. I would like to read more about pentaro! The artwork was great! Pentaro’s expressions towards his owner was funny and the way he also calls him “owner” is also very funny. Hayakawa (his owner) was a little annoying because he tends to (but not on purpose) “ignore” Pentaro, but despite that Pentaro seems to like he likes him very much!
Such a light read!
Seriously, who can resist a cover as cute as Penguin & House Volume 1? I love everything about this cover. The title, the colors, the artwork! It's all SO cute! So yeah, I grabbed it and happily dove on it.
Pen is, as you might have guessed, a Penguin. His owner is Hayakawa and Pen is determined to make him the happiest human ever. Pen does everything; he cooks, cleans, and is very doting. In short, he is the perfect penguin.
Unfortunately, Hayakawa is not as neat as Pen. He is, in fact, quite the slob. He shows up in dirty sports gear, happily eats junk, and misses out on all the sweet effort Pen makes for his favorite owner.
Ow. My heart. I adore Pen the Penguin so very, very much. That's why it was so hard to read Penguin & House Volume 1. You see, Pen is a perfect penguin, but Hayakawa is not a good owner. Or a good friend.
He overlooks everything Pen does for him, frequently utterly messing up all the work Pen does around the house. It hurts to see him so disrespected, and it made it very difficult to enjoy this story as I expected. You see, I expected something lighthearted and fun. What I got was quite sad.
Imagine you’re living with a neat, multitasking penguin who goes above and beyond just to see you smile every day . . . Do you have a favourite animal? One who has always made your heart skip a beat? Me too, take a guess!
Pen is one of the most adorable penguins you can dream of having around. In fact, his cuteness is the main reason why everyone who meets him ends up being in awe! If only Hayakawa would be more considerate and appreciate everything Pen does the same way his friends do, it would sure make this penguin’s day. Mind you, he loves Pen, but he’s so lazy that he doesn’t notice all the amazing things Pen constantly does for him. Of course, all this leads to inevitable funny scenes that—while laughing—make you want to really shake the human and hug the penguin. If only we could really do that! Better yet, if we could just have our own doting penguin . . .
An enjoyable and so very cute read with some brief interludes that give an even nicer touch to this manga. I dare you not to browse the web to look at more penguin cuteness after reading this!
This was such a cute and relaxing slice of life that had me smiling or laughing pretty much the entire time I was reading it. I adored Pen-chan, he was so adorable and I loved how hard he tried to make his owner happy, he was a total sweetheart. I can't wait to read the next volume!

Penguin & House 1 by Akiho Ieda was a cute slice-of-life comedy in the vein of "The Emperor and I" and "With You and the Rain" about a very well trained pet penguin and his inconsiderate, college age owner. Cute art. very quick read, lots of slapstick gags and the like but who couldn't love Pen the penguin??
