I absolutely loved the concept but I wasn't sold on the content. It felt dragged out, repetitive and too young for me - while at the same time making me cringe at some of the adult things the teenagers did. I won't discourage anyone from reading this book though. It just was not for me personally.
This was a really fun dystopian novel. The 1st in a series of 3. I’m really looking forward to reading the other books in the series.
The characters were likable, the good characters anyway. I loved how the relationships grew throughout the story.
It’s a story of abuse, betrayal and friendship.
A bunch of cash flowing into a company called Genesis so they can play with DNA to make “perfect” children. What could go wrong?
The thing is, originally Genesis seemed to have good intentions…or at least some of the participants did. Some of the donors and participants lost children due to terrible diseases so they wanted to figure out how to ensure future children didn’t have those issues. Sounds like a good plan…or maybe not.
Juliet (the OG perfect child) and Julie Eight were held captive, as if they were lab rats. Genesis can’t allow their perfect creations to get away, because they have bigger plans for them. When the girls escape chaos ensures and the nightmare goes from bad to worse.
This book will immediately draw you in. Buckle up, you’re in for a wild ride.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review. I absolutely loved this book! It's a bit scary what can happen in the name of science. This book follows the beginnings of what happens when Juliet escapes her home. I understand there are two more books to be released, and I absolutely can't wait for them. Loved this!
I give this book 3.5 stars. The premise is really interesting - a child created to be “perfect” and protected from the outside world at all costs. What will happen when the child discovers the lies her parents told her throughout her life and has a chance at freedom. The first 3/4 of the book kept my attention but the last 1/4 seemed to drag on a bit. I enjoyed the characters and suspense of the story.
This story hooked me right away--a man and wife just had a baby but it's not their first; in fact, they've had seven and every one died of crib death. Curiously too much of a coincidence for me. As I read on, I met Juliet. A nine-year-old girl born to these weird parents and nicknamed "perfect girl." She watches the neighbor kids play outside from her window because she is never allowed outside--the sun could cause her to freckle which would render her flawed, imperfect, and apparently imperfection in their house is dealt with by death. The question lingered for me though: why?
This story was fun. It was a little predictable but there were also a couple of twists. It covered a wide range: sci-fi, suspenseful thriller, a bit of horror, and budding romance. There were a couple minor plot holes and redundancies but hopefully they were fixed before publication.
This was a pretty good book overall but more for someone who likes sci fi thrillers. Not overly my personal favourite. It was hard for me to get into it for that fact but I feel if that is up your alley this book is for you!
Thanks to victory editing NetGalley co-op and the author L.A. Kessler for the ARC of Perfect. From the time Juliet is born her parents have been obsessed with keeping her perfect. Juliet is kept prisoner in her own home for almost 18 years without being allowed to go outside or get as much as a scrape or a bruise without becoming damaged to her parents. Juliet has always thought the outside world was dangerous but soon learns that her parents have been lying to her and her sister in order to keep them prisoner for their own science experiment.
I enjoyed this book and found it interesting from the very beginning. This was a good mix of sci-fi and mystery and I would recommend it to fans of either genre. Young adult books typically aren’t something I like to read but I found this story and the characters for the most part kept me intrigued and wanting to read more. I will definitely read the next book in this series!
Although fast-paced, I found the story disconnected throughout. A lot of questions are left unanswered by the end but will chop it up to this being the first book in the trilogy. The plot didn't pull me in enough to want to read the subsequent books.
First book in a new trilogy.
Juliet has never seen the outside world except through her upstairs window.
“I’ve dreamed of this day forever, but in my dreams, I was happy and free. Right now, all I feel is…lost and afraid.”
A secret foundation, government cover up and two innocent lives.
Nowhere is safe.
Creepy , intense , edge of your seat can’t put it down. Can you tell I loved this story??
I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next installment.
SCI/FI usually isn’t my go to genre but I absolutely loved this book. I can’t wait for the next one. The characters were really fleshed out and it made you really connect to the horror that Juliet and Julie-Eight experienced.
Thank you publisher for the copy of the book.
I do enjoy the book. A fun read. My expectations with sci-fi/mystery novels are quite high and Perfect is just at the good level of reading.
Definitely a compelling and well thought out read. The idea of the perfect child was a great start for a thriller that's verging on horror. I did enjoy it and was definitely rooting for the main three characters. Tone wise, Misery came to mind a lot while reading it. It was a bit rushed at times and all considered, I think it could have gone in on the emotional depth more. I was eager to find out what happened but I never quite got to that anticipation-fear that comes from really caring about characters. All told, I read it in one go and felt drawn in throughout.
This book was so good. It's not my usual genre but the description really piqued my interest and I'm glad I went for it.
Juliet has never been allowed to leave her house, has never had so much as a cold and it is imperative she remains "perfect". Her parents are part of a secret organisation that are researching and gathering data on cloning children and any subjects that turns out less than perfect are discarded. Then Juliet meets Billy and she decides to break free with her little sister and wants to live and realises that not being perfect is part of being human.
The sisterly love between Juliet and Julia-Eight is beautiful and protective. I loved Juliet and Billy's relationship too and the fierceness at which he wanted to help and protect her.
As I was reading, I didn't know who could be trusted and I devoured this book in the space of a day. Now I am in desperate need of the next book with the way this one ended!
I had requested this book via NetGalley and would like to firstly give them a shoutout and a thank you!
This is the first book I have read by L.A. Kessler and it was an interesting one! The premise focuses on Perfection, and when Juliet is born her parents do all within their power to ensure she is perfect in every way. So much so, Juliet wears gloves and fuzzy socks in the home to protect her hands and feet from anything that would deem her tainted by the world.
Juliet has never been outside, nor has her younger sister Julie-Eight. It is from here that we are thrown into the whirlwind that is their lives. I found this book really interesting and the idea of perfection and maintaining that perfection at all costs really intrigued me. Imagine every time you cut your finger or grazed your knee you were deemed tainted and so had to face consequences? Baffling right?
I was reluctant to give this book more than 4 stars due to some things I found quite hard to grasp. If you had been in captivity your entire life and unknowingly emotionally and mentally abused, would you trust the first person you saw? Also I found the love interest very predictable and unbelievable. The love story was a fast burning flame and I just don’t think in real life (I understand this is fictional) someone in this position could fall for someone so quickly. Everyone is far too trusting and willing to risk everything. It had the premise to be such a scary and thrilling book but was more YA romance with a little darkness thrown into it. That’s not a bad thing! Just not what I was expecting.
I love sci-fi thriller/horror anything so I enjoyed this! The cloning storyline was very interesting and flowed nicely! I will definitely recommend reading this one! It was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
This is a fast paced book. It really makes you think about the impact cloning would have on the world and the details you would never think about. The writing is pretty predictable and you know what is going to happen throughout the book, there aren't any surprises. It has an interesting concept, but probably won't read any of the other books in the Genesis series.
Incredibly interesting premise that did not disappoint! Juliet Huff has led a sheltered life - so sheltered she has never even stepped outside. To keep this spoiler free, circumstances lead to an unbelievable discovery that sets off a chain of events that will forever alter Juliet's life.
Absolutely loved this, the suspense was off the charts! I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
This isn't the genre I would usually go for. But I did enjoy it. It was slow and creepy, a deeply unsettling book but I did like it. Its a keeper for those October Halloween reads
Perfect is about Juliet, a girl that is locked inside her house so that she stays perfect. Juliet has never been outside; she has never been sick or so much as had a single scratch on her. As her 18th birthday approaches, Juliet makes a startling discovery.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. I binged read it in two days.
This book is a ya sci fi horror novel, it wasn't for me not my style but I'd like to read it again on Halloween. It is very creepy
