Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington Books for the ARC of this!
Very cute, slightly paranormal romance. Perfect for if you want a romance with no actual scares that feels right for spooky season! I really liked the characters and their chemistry.
I was very excited to receive this ARC, when I read the description and that Therese Beharrie was a South African author! It sounded like a super interesting storyline (did not disappoint), and I work with a lot of (former) South Africans and get a lot of stories about “home” so knew it would be great in all aspects! Plus, another favorite author is South African but only bases some of her books or parts of the stories there. I love that this was in Cape Town, but not a lot of descriptions of the country or area. I did try to hear it read in my mind in an Afrikaans accent, though!
Gemma has a special skill - since she was young and her teacher shows up in her bedroom and she learns that she can see and help ghosts. Levi is a new ghost. Gemma spots Levi across a bar during her friend’s bachelorette celebrations, and is bet to kiss a stranger. Little did anyone know that acknowledging, especially kissing, a ghost, makes them visible to everyone. Levi is a special case already, as he has been sent to help Gemma in a mission - connecting with her long-lost twin sister (main character in Beharrie’s previous book, And They Lived Happily Ever After - which I hope to read immediately, it sounds great and now I need Gaia’s story)!
I totally enjoyed this book and the writing and characters, chemistry, pacing - everything! I’m going to go and read more of her works and definitely recommend this to everyone, whether they think they want to read a ghost romance or not! I think about a 4.25-star, not just 4.
I received an advance copy from NetGalley and Kensington Books, Zebra, and this is my honest review and feedback.
Theresa Beharrie is an interesting author and like how she develops characters and stories.
This one mixes paranormal and romance making them work together. It's an unusual story, poignant and entertaining at the same time
I loved the characters and enjoyed the plot.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for providing me with a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review!
3.0
Pretty standard, there’s nothing really sophisticated or outlandish about it - I would put it more along the lines of whacky but heartfelt. The plot is mediocre at best, the romance is flimsy, the message is confusing. I’m not sure how I really feel about this book, on one hand I enjoyed it cause the characters are great but they don’t seem to have any believability nor any sense of good morals, which makes it hard to root for them. Their chemistry is a little lacking as well, but that may be because I have been biased by another book that had off-the -charts chemistry and A Ghost in Shining Armour just couldn’t compare.
I liked Gemma and her internal struggle, it was relatable and it was written well. Levi… oh my dear Levi, you were done dirty. I understand that life is a choice and some choices would make you happier than others, I just wish the author would have made it convincing. There was no justification for Levi’s choice, and Gemma didn’t seem like the strongest motivator. These two really had NOTHING going for them - there were no stakes for the couple and they barely even knew each other, so it was just hard to be convinced in my opinion. I think Levi had higher stakes, and we should have seen his internal struggle throughout this and we were ROBBED of a truly amazing plot point that could have shaken the literary world but it didn’t.
I think things just fell flat with this book, and emotions could have been acknowledged more, experiences, thoughts and feelings could have been added. This book has no emotional core despite its heavy themes - and sadly that’s where it falls flat for me. More thought on the emotional weight of this book would have made this better.
Gemma receives the ability to see ghost at a young age and since then she has done what she can to help them move one. All is well until she takes on a bet to kiss the handsome stranger at the bar. She is shocked to learn that this ghost has been sent to help her.
This story was very enjoyable and well written. Levi sounded like the perfect man. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a cute ghost story complete with a little spice.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this new novel.
I'm sorry to say that at 35 % I started to skim because it was so slow. Filling three pages with angst from the same in the same scene was way too long. Gemma and Levi's love story was too drawn out for my taste.
Also, I've realized that I don't like ghost romances but that's on me, not the novel.
I should have expected after not liking the first one that this one wouldn’t either, but it was more due to the dynamics of the romance that time. This time, I’m confused by both the logistics AND the romance. How is he a ghost, but he’s still solid? And there’s little to know relationship progression, and I’m already at 50%! I love Therese Beharrie, but I feel like she’s better at writing pure contemporary/category length works.
Lovely and cute story!
I really enjoyed this book, so cute and funny!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the copy…
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own
I never have been a fan of fantasy romance till know. A Ghost in Shining Armor tells the story of Gemma who is this wonderful sweet and caring human that can see ghosts . All capes are off when she goes out one night with her friends and ends up kissing a ghost (a hunk of a ghost). Levi is not just a guy she kissed because he has a mission to help reunite with her sister. Totally addictive, totally fast-paced and loveable characters. Recommend this gem.
I liked this book, but I think the paranormal aspects just aren't for me! I love the classic 90's/2000's movies with those kind of plots, but I guess I just don't like it in book form. Totally a ME issue!
During reading I kept thinking how lacking the world building and explanation was, and was frequently frustrated. Once finishing, I come to find out (via a review) that this is the second in a series, and that book one gives a lot of context. I am not sure whether or not that is true, because I dont have much interest in reading the first. I loved the concept of this story but the execution fell flat, I did not feel the chemistry between the two MCs at all.
Listen. At this point, I just want to read everything the author writes. She is so incredibly talented. How talented? I was rooting for a living human and a ghost!!! Gemma is such a brilliantly beautiful person, sunshine in human form, always giving and caring and wanting to make others happy. Levi is grumpy as heck (did I mention I love grumpy/sunshine?!?) and trying to figure out how to help this stubborn but oddly endearing human so he can get back to his sister. I love him! I love her! I love them!! I really really hope the series continues!!
Thank you so to Netgalley for a copy of this novel!
Gemma can see and talk to ghosts. She has ever since she was 18. She knows how to handle them until Levi and a random kiss has her thoughts spinning out of control. I thought this story was adorable as were the characters. It’s a slow burn romance and I definitely recommend it.
This was such an interesting way to write about the choices we make to have or not have the life we want. Bravo to Therese Beharie for writing a complex and heavy topic with a level humor that didn't make me feel sad.
It was my first paranormal romance book so i didn't know what to expect, it was good, heartwarming and since is paranormal it gives a lot of space for self reflecting in life and other stuff... I liked the characters and the way they hold themselves in the book and the situation on the book. Definitely reading more from this author.
Included as a top pick in bimonthly September New Releases post, which highlights and promotes upcoming releases of the month (link attached)
Myth: 4/5
This was a cozy paranormal romance that pulled on your heart strings. Both Gemma and Levi are in need of some self reflection (aren’t we all) in the way they handle their closest relationships. With even more upheaval since Gemma has learned a big secret her parents kept from her and Levi is, you know, dead. The characters were a delight and their chemistry was compelling.
Magic: 3.5/5
It was a little random, a dash of multiverse, a dash of other beings with universal influence, and of course, Gemma, have lived 12 years helping ghosts. I just rolled with it, and it worked. It was really fun and pushed the story forward when it needed to.
Overall: 4/5
I’m very into cozy paranormal romances at the moment, so this was another delightful treat.
A paranormal rom com with featuring a ghost and the woman who can see him. Gemma kissed Levi and he came back to help her reconcile with a mysterious sister- but even more, he's fallen for her. It's kind of an odd one which would have benefited from a bit more explanation of their respective situations and worldbuilding but if you buy the premise it's a quick entertaining read. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
Ahhh okay I came for the cover and stayed for the excellent story. First, I really enjoy books by this author. Every single time. So I didn't expect not to like it, I just wasn't aware that I'd be obsessed. I am a sucked for Contemporary/paranoid mixed romance. I'm in awe.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a whimsical read full of magic, romance, charm & humor. I loved the plot of the book like it was so interesting.
Definitely a Fall worthy read!
