I loved the diversity of the characters and the storyline was pretty good. Although there were a few points that could have been explored a bit more. Still an interesting take on sci fi and I liked the pacing of the book.
A really cute short sci-fi found family story!
The characters were great and loveable, the representation really well done, however the plot seemed to jump around a lot, it felt things were moving both too fast and too slow. However the ending tied up everything well and overall an enjoyable read!
I really enjoyed this book, I thought the writing was good and I really liked the characterisation in the book. It was a quick and easy read that I couldn't put down and I loved the cover too.
First of all, I definitely judged this book by the cover because wow that is one gorgeous page of art encapsulating queer yearning (especially from Tai's side).
The writing style and language was pretty great for someone (like me) who reads after studying for their finals the whole day. For me, reading shouldn't be exhausting since this is an escape and Adrift in Starlight cleared the check list.
As an enby queer person who dabbles in sw on the side, Tai's story spoke to me. Specifically how they talk about their clients from their queer non binary point of view with respect to attraction and feelings.
The whole pan x ace troupe in this book was such a refreshing and fascinating story to read and I know I'm gonna be recommending this book to my queer group chats.
Now I'm an absolute ho for the found family troupe like every other LGBTQ+ you may know but in this book it kind of felt forced and didn't really flow smoothly. It could've been given a bit more chapters to develop fully. Like Hue and Jimin definitely needed more on page plot contribution before the epilogue.
Over all this was a fun read. I was thinking about the book while going about my life so this gets 4/5 for me.
I genuinely look forward to the next installment in this series!
Thank you, City Owl Press, for allowing me to read Adrift in Starlight
I wasn't exactly wowed by this novel, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I expected something more, but it was nice.
Briar gives readers a beautiful cover and title for her book. However. based on the description I thought this was really going to grab my attention. The book was light and airy, however, word building was too simple and more on the mature young adult side. However it was still a fun read, just not my personal type of fantasy book is all. Totally nothing against the author and her abilities to capture audiences whatsoever.
When set adrift in the universe, some things are worth holding onto.
Titan Valentino has been offered a job they can’t refuse.
Tai, a gender-neutral courtesan, receives a scandalous proposition: seduce an actor's virgin fiancée. The money is enough to pay off Tai’s crushing medical debt, a tantalizing prospect.
Too bad Aisha Malik isn’t the easy target they expect.
A standoffish historian who hates to be touched, she’s laser-focused on her career, and completely unaware that her marriage has been arranged behind her back. This could be the one instance where Tai’s charm and charisma fail them.
Then an accidental heist throws them together as partners in crime.
Fleeing from the Authorities, they’re dragged into one adventure after another: alien planets, pirate duels, and narrow escapes from the law. As Tai and Aisha open up to each other, deeper feelings kindle between them. But that reward money still hangs over Tai’s head. Telling Aisha the truth could ruin everything…
Their freedom, their career, and their blossoming love all hang in the balance. To save one might mean sacrificing the rest.
Thank you Netgalley for the e-arc

This was a really fun story, I loved all the diversity that was in it.
It was good although a bit weird at times, but it was worth it overall.
Breezy, sexy, and a lot of fun! Loved the representation in this one, but I did find the plot didn't quite live up to the promising blurb. Awesome if you're looking for lighter sci-fi.
Readers who loved the Lunar Chronicles will enjoy this read. This story gave me the same kind of feel. A rag-tag group of strangers/semi-strangers, on the run to right a wrong, cybernetic enhancements, space travel, and unlikely friends. I love the LGTBQ+ representation within the characters. They are all so multi-dimensional and evolve over the course of the book. I can't wait to see what Mindi Briar comes out with next!
Do you like gays in space? Then this a book to add to your TBR. This has nonbinary, asexual and tons more LGBT+ rep. I loved the characters, felt like a found family, and love the representation in this book. It's a complex world but we're introduced to it in a way that felt easy to understand. If you've read gearbreakers or a Dark and Hollow Star, you're going to love this! This is adult sci-fi LGBT+ book.
When courtesan Tai is offered an escape route out of lifelong medical debt, they agree to get close to a celebrity's fiancée in order to figure out exactly why she's so cold towards him, and report back their findings. But when Tai meets Aisha, they find themself drawn irresistibly towards her. Alien abduction; off-planet adventures; and accidental criminality beckon in this madcap, tender, delightfully queer light sci-fi romp.
I loved the characters of Adrift in Starlight, especially Tai, and was so invested in their journey and on the edge of my seat wanting to know how their story would end. I thought the relationship between Tai and Aisha, and how they navigate their differing needs, was done with such respect and heart.
Plot-wise, I really enjoyed the opening, and found the ending so exciting. I found myself less engaged in the middle of the story with regards to the plot events, although the characters and their development carried the story.
While Adrift in Starlight is an example of lighter sci-fi, I did wish for a little more exploration of the world, because it's so fascinating, I would have loved to have learnt more. I felt the worldbuilding was a little light for my tastes. I thought it was such a prescient touch to explore medical debt as a millstone around Tai's neck. I absolutely adored the ending.
This is a book anyone could easily pick up and enjoy, and I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for some light sci-fi with very sweet romance and interesting characters.
I am grateful to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of Adrift in Starlight. These opinions are my own.
Adrift in Starlight
I had high expectations for this book. I loved the title and the cover, the blurb sounded really interesting, However I just didn’t fall in love with the characters, which made it really difficult to finish. Sorry
I started off skeptical for the opening chunk of this book but this turned out to be a surprisingly charming read, not as complex as your typical adult sci-fi and a bit too bizarre at times, but the sundry rep of the motley crew of colourful characters (who really grow on you) was refreshing and rarely superficial, and the budding romance (and the comfort Tai and Aisha come across with one another) was soft and touchingly respectful. Adrift in Starlight doesn't ask you to think too much but just sit back and savor the metagalactic ride, and I'm curious to see where the author will take this bunch of accidental criminals next.
Thank you to NetGalley and Owl City Press for kindly passing on this ARC! 💫
This was such an adventurous book and I didn't want to put it down!
I loved the setting of the story and the chemistry between the main characters!
Although I loved both of the main characters, I have a soft spot for Titan. I just love them okay?!
This was such a light, quick and fun read!
Light and fun, doesn't ask a lot of the reader. Unfortunately the prose and worldbuilding were way too simple to hold my interest. This isn't the right book for me, but I can see plenty of others enjoying it a lot.
