I really wanted to like this, but I didn't till the end. The storyline was so promising, with a perfect elevator pitch. I think there was so much unexplored potential, considering I didn't resonate or connect with the characters at all.
First off, the novel had some moments that I enjoyed and loved, but the others fell flat. Especially the connect with Audrey's childhood (her stepfather, calling her mom by her name, having an actor as a nanny) didn't click at all. I don't think that was well linked into the story at all. What I liked was they way Fred and Audrey first met and their whole photo booth thing was so cute!
To be clear, it is hard to imagine someone being so uncertain about their marriage eleventh hour, with the addition of not having come to terms with an old relationship yet. Nothing about this novel felt, mostly filmy.
Thank you Penguin Group Putnam and NetGalley for this e-ARC. All opinions in this review are purely mine.
While I enjoyed this book, I found the heroine's internal conflict stressful! She is debating whether she should stay with an amazing guy or leave him for someone she met years ago and had the perfect day with, who just so happens to show up at her wedding! I guess it comes down to what your beliefs on love are. The story is paced well and is very engaging. I would recommend it to a friend.
Thank you to Penguin Group Putnam Books for my advanced copy!
This was my third book that I have read by Cousens and I truly enjoyed it! I love Cousens ability to make a romance book have so much depth and emotion behind it! This book follows Audrey who is all over the place who is set to marry josh, who is laid back and down to heart. They are polar opposites but they still make their relationship work and really balance each other out. This lack of a spark really forces Audrey to look at her relationship and make a decision of if Josh is the one she truly wants to marry. Then Audrey is set to reflect on a past romance, because it cannot simply be a coincidence that he's shown up right before her wedding. This book was sad, it was hilarious, and it truly made you feel each of the emotions so deeply which
So the one that got away' turns up the night before your wedding - what do you do? This book was ok for me. I didn't enjoy the characters or the story line. I usually like Sophie Cousens' books so it might have just been a one off for me for this one. I did finish it so it was not a DNF but just not one that was great for me.
Before I Do honestly made me cringe when I read the overview of the book BUT in all the right ways. What would you do if you spotted your first love at your rehearsal dinner?!?
I’m a fan of books that change the perspective time in different chapters which in this case was before the wedding and after.
As much as I love Cousen’s writing and characters, Audrey seemed to be too much of a push over to me. Especially when it came to her own wedding! There were times I was so frustrated by her actions and decisions that I had to stop reading for a bit. And the lack of chemistry between Josh and Audrey made me want to scream which made the ending more obvious. There just wasn’t enough “love” conflict between Fred and Josh for me.
Audrey is getting married soon, but lately she’s been wondering if her fiancé Josh is really “the one”. She still thinks about Fred, whom she met in collections through the unlimited meet cute. When he comes to the rehearsal dinner, Audrey thinks it might be Fate that’s telling her not to go through with her wedding.
I enjoyed this book, it’s well written and the characters are true to life. We all have someone in our past that we think about every now and then, imagine the confusion if they showed up the night before your wedding! 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed as in this review are completely my own.
Sophie Cousens always leaves me squealing!! I love reading the loves she creates and entwines with others. So delicate and beautiful and achey. LOVE!
I wasn't sure what I thought of this book initially, but as you get deeper into it, the multiple timelines and the uncovering of who Audrey is and how her experiences shaped her made this quite enjoyable. It does help you think about the what ifs in life - did that one missed moment impact your future happiness? Did the guy that "got away" mean any future relationship is just you settling, and not really making you happy? Does the stable guy represent settling or can it be exactly what you need to balance who you are?
Solid 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.
Before I Do follows Audrey as she prepares to marry her fiancé while the universe seems to be conspiring against her. It’s a cute story, a bit cringe in some spots, more about self-discovery than romance. The topics covered are a little dark at times but the story stays lighthearted throughout. It takes a few chapters for the story to settle in, but end up being an easily bingeable book.
Before I Do was such a fun, fresh take on a wedding gone wrong! The timeline kept things interesting and I truly didn’t know how the story was going to end, which is so difficult to do in a romance! The characters were so well developed and I loved that they were allowed to be a little messy, but still given a satisfying ending.
I have to stop picking up books blindly, but I have loved Cousens' previous books. Personally I do not care for wedding based books and books with the love triangle/sort of who will she choose storyline. This just was not personally for be, but it will work for others and Cousens' writing is as great as ever.
I enjoyed the smart and witty tone of dialogues. I loved the execution between different time lines that giving us enough clues about characters’ back stories, how they meet with each other, how they evolve, how their lives could be directed into different path if they would make different choices and how their fates are sealed after so many incidents and people involved into their lives.
This was my 3rd book by her, and I think it’s my favorite. I enjoyed how the story unfolded and I would definitely recommend this
I keep going back and forth about this book. I typically live and die for Sophie Cousens and I saw glimmers of why throughout this book. Ultimately, it wasn't one I was dying to keep picking up. I liked the story line and how it was a modern riff on Gone with the Wind. But at the end of the day, re: this book, frankly I don't give a d***.
This was an absolute delight to read! When “the one who got away” shows up the night before your wedding… you can only imagine the shenanigans that are about to happen. This was funny, sweet, swoon worthy, and touched up on some sensitive subjects. I’m a huge fan of Sophie Cousens writing and this one easily became my new favorite.
I have come to the conclusion that Sophie Cousens is not an author for me. I tried to read this one and the previous book one after another, and did not connect or enjoy either of them.
Please note that I received this book via NetGalley.
This happens to be one of my favorites only because it's a straight what-if book.
The girl falls in love gets heartbroken and moves on... or so she thought. Aubrey is getting married to the guy she moved on to. The day before the I dos her sister arrives with her date. That date happens to be the one she had an instant connection with. Do you take this as some type of omen or just fate-mucking things up? This is a good book to read if you are into love triangles and the past comes back to bite.
Audrey and Josh are set to get married, they're enjoying their rehearsal dinner until Josh's sister shows up with Audrey's former whatever he is, Fred. He was her one day of possibility. But now could he be her future, was this fate stepping in? Should she marry Josh?
Is true love a choice or fate?
I just reviewed Before I Do by Sophie Cousens. #BeforeIDo #NetGalley
I found it very hard to really get into this book. I did not love the characters. Seemed to drag on a bit. Unfortunately, not one of my favorites.
After reading This Time Next Year, I was thrilled to read Cousens’ newest novel. I really enjoyed the concept of this one & the shifting timeline, but it was slow at parts. I found it harder to connect with Audrey as a MC but overall I did enjoy her love story. A decent romance that’s very light on steam!
