My thoughts about Noelle Holten’s 6 Ripley Avenue is one of those thrillers that grips you at the beginning and never lets go till the very end. The plot is straightforward. This one does not disappoint at any time. I had read it without unblinking my eyes and I was surprised as the quality of the excellent climate of suspense. The final part is amazing, leaves us with an open mouth and makes us wonder as was thought up this great story. Noelle Holten’s 6 Ripley Avenue contains tension , thriller , drama , mystery , plot twists and shocks , including decent scares with tense sequences especially in its final part, in a unexpected denouement, near of the end . Writer Noelle Holten delivers a different kind of thriller, that definitely will blow your mind. Despite the intriguing premise of this novel, the pacing of the novel was uneven and lacked intensity. The novel starts well, the writing is good and the main characters are well-fleshed out (with an exception of the law enforcement officials, who, for the most part, were “chasing their own tails”) but it is not difficult to zero in on the probable suspects early on, which makes it hard to remain engaged through the length of the novel despite the twists that are introduced as the story progresses. In short, 6 Ripley Avenue by Noelle Holten has potential but falls short in its execution. While I did not dislike the novel in its totality, I was a tad disappointed.

Noelle Holten's "6 Ripley Avenue" is unique, immersive and intriguing. A murder committed in a probational hostel, its location being a source of contention among the community, is nothing short of a luring premise. You won't be satisfied if you're looking for a police procedural. Instead, this read focuses on the intention behind Jeanette managing the hostel and a proponent of rehabilitation, Sloane, a journalist with a profoundly personal agenda and Helen, a nosy and curious neighbour. Narrated from these three points of view, this book captured my attention. However, there were instances where I felt that the narration dragged along with overextensions and deviations from the plot. I instantly figured out the killer, which was slightly disappointing, but I appreciated how Noelle connected all the dots. Her personal experience and expertise are remarkable and reflected on each page. A 4-star read!

Sloane was against the hostel opening on Ripley Avenue and as a news reporter, she made sure the story stayed in the headlines but the hostel still opened.

Helen lives next door to the hostel and did not want high risk offenders being so close. To keep an eye on the hostel, she started volunteering in the kitchen there.

Jeanette is in charge of the hostel and when Danny, a convicted murderer, is murdered in the hostel, Jeanette’s job is on the line.

Who is the killer? Is it one of the offenders or someone who was against the place opening up? Who has a reason to kill Danny?

This is such a great standalone thriller from the author. It was interesting to learn how the system does work for life in hostels while the previous offenders wait to be allowed back into the community.

I didn’t know who the killer was, even though I did work out why but the twists kept having me guessing wrongly about the killer! A well thought out plot that will keep you on your toes.

One house, eight killers, no witnesses. Have a go at working this one out - it’s not as easy as you think!

I usually love this author's work but her latest 6Ripley Avenue just did not grab me. A stand alone so no Maggie but it was so slow. A good premise but for me this book could of been so much more. Saying that I am sure other readers will enjoy it more just not for me.

I loved the Maggie Jamieson series so was interested to see what this standalone book would be like. Although a different murder mystery to her usual style I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Plenty of twists and tension to keep me reading and took until the end to find out who the murderer was. I would recommend this book if you like a slightly different to normal murder mystery.

This was an enjoyable read that had a unique premise, I don't think I have ever read a book where a murder takes place in a setting like in this one, so it was a really unique read. I found the pacing really slow, sometimes too slow in places, I think slow burning books are ok sometimes but this was like no burn for the majority of the book and so that part didnt really work for me but I really enjoyed the storyline aspect of the book.

I was looking forward to this one because the story sounded a little different then the standard murder mystery, It's an interesting setting and things start off well, but sadly not much really comes of it. As other reviewers have mentioned, the pacing here is awful - this book plods along so slowly that 20 or 30 pages can go by without anything meaningful occurring. The actual murder at the core of the story occurs in the first few pages, but is largely ignored after that. There's no procedural aspect here, so if you're looking for that you'll be disappointed. Police show up, question a few people, then leave. They pop back in every few chapters to chat with the main characters then disappear. Most of the book is centered around rather unlikeable Sloane, an investigative journalist, trying to write her story on Ripley House clashing with Jeanette, the property manager.

I slogged through to the end just to see if my 20% in prediction for the killer was correct (it was - another disappointment). It's a shame, because this author knows what they are doing: it's a good concept, the writing is solid, and there's no editing problems. I think if this book was 100 pages shorter, I'd have enjoyed much more.

What a gripping breath-taking novel! Based in a hostel for released dangerous criminals ( an Approved Premises), the local community is shocked when one of the residents is found murdered in the hostel. There is a lot of antagonism between the neighbours and the probation officers and suddenly things get a whole lot worse when there is another suspicious death. Full of corruption and dark personalities, the book raises the question as to whether rehabilitation is really ever possible. Fantastic book.

I was keen to read this book - the unique plot really grabbed me; a murder committed in a probation hostel - wow. The story mainly focusses on three characters: Sloane, Jeanette, and Helen. Sloane is a freelance investigative journalist - a lively character with an interesting back story. Jeanette manages the hostel - I felt for Jeanette, she certainly has a lot to deal with. And Helen who is the local busybody and typical nosy neighbour - I didn’t warm to her at all! The book is well written, but I did find my attention dwindling a little towards the middle as the plot unfolds slowly. It does pick up and to be honest, I felt the ending was a little rushed.

I have to say it was interesting to get an authentic insight into what life is like for offenders once released from prison. The author writes from personal knowledge - her background is working in the probation services and this knowledge shines throughout.

All in all, a good read, which gets a solid 4 stars from me.

I’ve read and enjoyed this authors previous books so I was delighted to see that there was a standalone novel on the way! For me this was a case of right book, wrong time I think. I’ve been struggling to connect with books lately. That being said, 6 Ripley Avenue is perfect for crime thriller fans, with plenty to keep the reader turning those pages well into the dark hours. Noelle Holten is definitely a name to keep in mind when you want a gripping crime read!

I really enjoyed the premise of this novel as it was fresh and new. A whodunit mystery that takes place at a sort of halfway house where criminals serve out the rest of their time. When a very unlikeable criminal is violently killed, there are a lot of suspects!
The book progresses quite slowly and the nosy neighbor, Helen, is a character I didn’t enjoy. I found while it has a unique plot, I enjoy books that are more fast paced and I struggled to finish. I would definitely give this author another shot though.

This is a new stand-alone mystery thriller by Noelle Holten and it’s one that I liked very much. The story is set mainly at 6 Ripley Avenue (the title of the book) which is a probation hostel and starts will the murder of one of the brutal offenders residing there. So there we have 8 killers and members of staff but no witnesses as to who may have committed the crime and from then on in it's a race to the end to discover who may be the culprit!
So first I have to say this was a really well written story and one that kept me guessing, the characters were all believable and not all likeable and for me that’s what kept my interest throughout. But I have to admit at times I felt my attention waning and around the middle of the book the story seemed to drag a little, it did pick up towards the end but then seemed a bit rushed however overall I did enjoy it and the 3 + stars reflect that.

I just reviewed 6 Ripley Avenue by Noelle Holten. #NetGalley

I enjoyed this addition to the locked room mystery genre. I liked seeing the killer’s perspective and how we saw them gradually lose control of the situation as the story went on. I didn’t particularly like Helen or Sloane, but found that they moved the story along. We also don’t get to see much of the investigation - this story focuses on the reactions of Helen, Sloane & Jeanette so it is understandable to see their reactions to the investigation, but I felt that without seeing how the police investigation was going, the story lacked a little punch. I still enjoyed the story, but it did feel that it was missing something.

I’ve read mixed reviews on here about this book, and I respect everyone has their own opinions but I have to say, for me, it’s one of the best books I’ve read this year.
Set in a rehabilitation hostel for serious offenders, written by an author that worked in that environment for years, it can’t help but be realistic.
The characters are stunning, and the crime realistic.
A great standalone thriller, or the start of a new series, either way I highly recommend it
