What a perfect read for #SpookySeason! The Hex Appeal was fun, entertaining and while I was surprised by the depth it went into with world building and the witch history plot, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s easy to follow, and packs a lot of adventure for a 300ish page book. Plus, the Bedlam House gives major Encanto vibes.
Highly recommend if you’re looking for a fast paced, magical adventure.
Thank you HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for the digital book in exchange for an honest review.

Hex appeal is the perfect light and fun spooky season read. At first the story felt a bit flat, but as the action ramps up and the characters find themselves travelling back in time, I found myself more and more invested in the plot. I struggled with the actual romance part of the book, but really enjoyed the historical themes and the witchy plot. Overall, a cute read that is perfect for fall!

Great read for spooky season! Fun characters and some parts were laugh out loud funny. Definitely recommend!

I think the description for this was spot on. Encanto and Hocus Pocus vibes are super prevalent and I thoroughly enjoyed that type of mixup. I really enjoyed the mix of characters and the different uses of magic each one of them did. I thought it brought a lot of vibrancy and a lot of fun to the story. I also really like the romance I think it wasn't too cheesy and it felt well developed.
I would definitely recommend this for someone looking for a nice witchy or Halloween read. Very fun and entertaining.

Thank you for this advance copy of The Hex Appeal. The fact this book is about Witches is perfect for me. Its my sort of vibe and I always find comfort in reading a book containing magic.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters, I loved the family dynamics, the fact the book is inclusive for gender neutral roles. It was fab but one thing I will say, this book is CHAOTIC! It's the only reason i rated this book 4 stars instead of 5. There were parts of the story/dialouge where I felt a bit lost and it was hard to keep concentrating on the flow of the text. I had to reread a few parts of the book to make sure i understood what was happening. The author writes in a style where I feel she leaves some happenings up to the imagination, kind of like, she thinks we would or should know the characters thought process or what is happening. Hence where i had to reread certain parts as I was certain i'd missed parts.

I still really enjoyed the storty in spite of this and I liked that it didn't go in the direction I thought it was going to. If anthing, I felt this book had three parts as there semmed to be three little stories going on that linked together by a certain evil charcter. He shall not be named.

Perfect book for spooky season!

Essie Winterscale is a witch who resents being a witch, especially her affinity for bringing things to a subzero temperature. Josh Henderson a lawyer in Seattle with a toxic girlfriend, up until the point where his dad left him a house in a tiny village in Essex that would change his life. Josh discovers Essie, the world of witchcraft, and dark family secrets upon arriving in Essex as the landlord of half the town, including Essies house. I’ve never read anything by Kate Johnson before so I’m not sure how this measures against her other books but I really did love her writing style here. This book is super fun and cute for when you’re in the mood for something witchy but don’t want full on “A discovery of witches” vibes. The whole coven of Beldam House is very charming and if this were made into a series about each of the witches I would absolutely devour it.

Thank you to the publisher and author for the advanced reading copy of Hex Appeal, receipt of which did not impact my review.

Hex Appeal follows Josh Henderson and Essie, after Josh moves to town from the US after he inherits a house in England. Unbeknownst to Josh, Essie and her family are witches and he’s going to forget ever meeting them — but for some reason, Josh is immune to some of their charms and spells. Their attraction to each other grows as the book goes on, but is there something amiss that could tear them apart?

I enjoyed Hex Appeal and think that others would if they liked books like The Ex Hex and The Kiss Curse. I did feel the plot at the beginning and the intro to all the various characters was a bit slow, but it picked up the pace around 50%.

This is a fun witchy romance from UK and you don’t want to miss it.

✨ Strangers to lovers
✨ An enchanted house
✨ Time travel
✨ A family curse
✨ Magical animals, plants and people
✨ Found family

This book captured me from the first few chapters & wouldn’t let go. What I thought was just going to be a fun romance with witchy elements turned into a time traveling magical mysterious adventure and I couldn’t turn pages fast enough. Essie & Josh are the witchy pair to beat all witchy pairs this spooky season.

Thank you to One More Chapter & Harper Collins UK for the ARC.

Brilliant. Second book I've read by Kate Johnson, fantastic descriptions that build a world within your mind which you can clearly imagine and immerse yourself in. The story was gripping and pulled you in from the beginning, I couldn't put it down.

In Hex Appeal we follow witch Essie, who lives in a small Essex village with her coven in Beldam House, a house with a mind of its own. Everything is fine until Josh turns up, an American who has just inherited a house and is now landlord to half the properties in the village, including Beldam House, and they haven't paid rent for over 300 years.

This book was such a fun and light-hearted read, a perfect spooky season witchy romance that I couldn't put down.

Thank you to Harper Collins and Net Galley for the chance to read Hex Appeal.

This book was the perfect read for "spooky" season. I was immediately drawn in from the get-go. I could not put this book down until I finished it. I would venture to say that this is a must read for anyone who is looking for the ideal autumn/Halloween read.

I liked this book a lot. It sucked me in immediately and I couldn't put it down. The characters were developed so well and were so easy to like. The plot was steady with little to no plot holes.

If frozen crossed over from Disney to hallmark it would be this book! And I’m not even mad about it.

There was A LOT going on in this book. For the short page count I felt like there was so much content. I found the main story arc to be utterly fascinating, all of the origin stories to the curse and the missing house, I unfortunately found the story got overshadowed by the typical romance archetype through out the second half of the book.

Overall I loved all of the history of witches in the uk and wished there was more of that less romance! But perfect october witchy read! Honestly if hallmark picked up books like this I might be tempted to watch a movie or two..

I can't even explain how much I absolutely LOVED this witchy book by a new to me author!!! Hex Appeal is full of found family, magic, menace, a delightfully cast of quirky characters and is the most perfect #SpookySeason read of the year!

I was pulled in by the wonderfully purple cover but Kate Johnson's writing had me caring about these characters so deeply! Josh and Essie are flawed but still optimistic about love and life even though they've been through some traumatic experiences. I loved them together and was fighting for them to get their HEA right to the very end.

HIGHLY recommended for fans of Practical magic, The ex hex or The fix-it witches series. Bonus content for me was the author's note at the end with a brief history of witchcraft and the witch trials in Europe/North America. I really can't recommend this book enough especially if you're looking for your next totally engaging, big-hearted, swoony Witchy romance! Much thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!!

Hex Appeal is one of the most charming and steamy witchy rom-coms I've ever read! I could not put this book down! It was witty, heart-warming, steamy and fun. It starts off with Josh Henderson moving from Seattle to Essex when he inherits a house, Brook Manor Farm, after his biological father's death. When going through documents, he notices he owns half of Good Winter's property. One rental, Bedlam House, has not paid rent in 300 years. Josh goes on a walk to find Bedlam House, no one in town seems to know where it is. On his walk, he runs into Essie Winterscale, a witch who lives in Bedlam House. She thinks he is a window repair man, not their landlord coming to claim 300 years worth of rent. The magic sparks between them almost instantly.

It could have used more steam, but I enjoyed the romance scenes. My only complaint is the word dungarees was used a hundred times, which I learned is overalls. Don't mind me, I'm just super American and learning more and more British slang with every read by a UK author.

If this is not a series, I will be very disappointed. I enjoyed this so much! Perfect read for October, just grab a cozy sweater, hot cup of tea, and curl up under a big blanket. 4.5 star read! Will post on Amazon and Goodreads as well.

Thank you #KateJohnson , #NetGalley & #HarperCollinsUK #OneMoreChapter for this eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

It’s’ the season for witchy romcoms!

Josh needs a new start so he moves to Good Winter, a small town where he’s inherited a number of properties. When he arrives he’s surprised to learn that rent on one of the properties hasn’t been paid since the 1700’s. When Josh begins to investigate, he meets Essie, a witch who is living at the property.

Hex Appeal was a fun seasonal read! I enjoyed the characters. I think the magic aspects could have used a bit more explanation and the plot got a bit off track at times, but, overall, I enjoyed the book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC!

When Josh moves to a rundown house in Winterscale to hide from his ex, he doesn’t expect that his life is about to turn upside down, but a search for a mysterious house that owes him thousands in back rent puts him right in the middle of a witchy saga.

For Essie, life is as ordinary as it can get for a witch until she discovers Josh seems immune to a memory spell on their house. But things get even more complicated when it’s revealed her winter ritual is no longer keeping an evil force at bay and it may be related to Josh.

This story is unique and definitely worth a read.

I've been loving the influx of 'witchy' romances atm, but this one just didn't hit the mark for me. I struggled to connect with the characters in any way, and didn't like the insta romance style arc the author put in. I ended up DNF'ing at around 30%.
