I like Shell’s character, but she seems to put herself in some impossible situations. After unwittingly placing herself in an uncomfortable position with her friends. She couldn’t ignore the pleas for help coming from the same friends. Shell had a challenging puzzler before her, and it would take every ounce of her curiosity sleuthing skills to get through this one. This was an entertaining and captivating read.
This story was really slow paced. It took to a third of the way in the book before the murder even happened. I loved the animal content but the story just moved too darn slowly.
This is a great story with a couple of interesting twists. I really like Shell and how she has changed her life. I have a feeling her mother could make for some interesting reading in the future. I must say though that I think Purrday is my favorite. I do wonder about that cat’s talents. I enjoyed the storyline and the folks of Fox Hollow. I can’t wait to catch up with them again. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own. This book released on 6-21-2020, but I did not receive it until 6-26-2020.
Shell McMillan and Gary Presser are planning the grand re-opening of Urban Tails Pet Shop. They've hired staff, ordered supplies and convinced their neighboring businesses to participate in the festive event. Unfortunately, the live singer backed out but they have a fortune-telling parrot.
The day before the event Johnny Draco returns to town. Five years ago Johnny had swindled most of the town in a bad investment deal, and then vanished without a trace. Now he says he's discovered something that will change the lives of all that were cheated, including his own.
There's no shortage of suspects when Shell finds Johnny's dead body on the day of tge festival. Unfortunately the police are looking at Shell's good friend as their main suspect, so she needs to identify the real killer.
This is the sophomore installment of the series. I read the first one when it was rebranded to this series title.
The mystery centers on the murder of a former resident, Johnny Draco. Draco is suspected and accused of swindling Fox Hollow residents out of significant sums of money and then simply disappearing when the investments failed. There are plenty of suspects and Shell is on it.
I liked the twists, turns and plot shifts as Shell tries to get to the bottom of the murder. A friend of hers becomes a suspect but Shell is sure she didn’t do it. The parrot and the cat actually help Shell out. One predicts the future and the other helps her out of scrapes.
I enjoyed my visit to Fox Hollow. It was good to see the recurring characters and discover how they have grown.
I look forward to the next issue. I received a copy of this book days before publication from Netgalley. I am not required to leave a positive review.
With the re-opening of her Urban Tails Pet Shop just days away ShellMcMillan has her hands full planning entertainment for the event including a fortune-telling parrot. Then rumors start of the return of Johnny Draco a former investment guru who swindled money from most of residents of Fox Hollow then vanished without a trace. When the parrot predicts a dire future for Draco and his dead body is found just hours later no one can say they’re surprised but no one knows who did it. There are many suspects but Shell’s good friend is the focus because of an argument she was seen having with Draco. So She’ll begins investigating his past his former employer and everyone who lost money to him. She’ll suddenly realizes she’s uncovered a secret someone would kill to keep hidden and the parrot could predict she has no future at all. A very enjoyable story with great characters.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Shell’s big grand opening of her pet shop is fast approaching. She is trying to juggle all sorts of things, including replacement of a musician who has a bad habit of cancelling gigs at the last moment. She is told of a very good singer who skipped town in the wake of a financial scandal so she is surprised when he shows up at her store. She is even more surprised when he ends of dead and her friend is the prime suspect for his murder.
She is going to need all the help she can get from her former co=star Gary and her very handsome and debonair kitty, Purrsday. The one eyed fellow is a heartbreaker and you are going to fall in love with him. He is also a pretty good sleuthing partner. Shell is almost as good a detective in real life as she was on her tv series. Now if she could find some way to contain her critical mother, things might run more smoothly.
It is a fun read and as usual, the felines are the stars of the show. I must confess. The parrots are pretty cool too. Five purrs and two paws up.
Killers of a Feather, book 2 in Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries, is an entertaining traditional cozy mystery with delightful characters. I am not sure what first draws Shel McMillan's intense interest in the mystery of Johnny Bravo; perhaps it was the success in a prior case or maybe it was the encouragement of her partner in crime (fighting that is) or could it be her experience as an actress in a crime series. Whatever first drew her into checking out the man hated by several people in her community, once a friend becomes a major suspect in a murder case, there is no way she and her fellow actor and current housemate would turn away from the friend's request to investigate the murder that has law enforcement eyes on her. There were several instances when I thought a character would devolve into a stereotypical roll but that didn't happen. Shel's mother came closest but even she managed to be her own person and stand above the expected, for the most part. She still managed to earn some laughs as the mother with very specific expectations and retired actress who expects to be admired. The cats are adorable and as unique as the two footed people in the delightful novel.
I requested an ARC of Killers of a Feather from Beyond the Page via NetGalley because the plot intrigued me, and I was glad I had done so. Now it is time to go back and catch the first book in the series.

This was an enjoyable cozy. The first I've read in this series but it won't be the last! Former actress Shell McMillan inherits her aunts pet shop and plans a grand reopening with the whole street of shop owners participating. For the event, Shell hires a parrot who tells fortunes. Johnny Draco, a former investment advisor who swindled money from many of the residents, unexpectedly returns to town and shows up at the grand opening and ends up murdered shortly after the parrot owner insists on his parrot reading his fortune. Shells good friend was one of Johnny's victims, and when she is seen arguing with him shortly before his murder, she becomes the main suspect. Shell butts heads with her boyfriend who is the detective assigned to the case, as she and her roommate Gary, her former co-star, put on their sleuthing hats to clear their friends name. This was a fun read with colorful characters, a good plot, and lots of red herrings. Thank you netgalley for the advance read.
I've been waiting this book for ages and I was very happy when I saw it was going to be out soon.
Ms LoTempio never disappoints and delivers another highly entertaining and solid mystery.
I loved to catch up with the characters and read the book as fast as I could as the solid mystery kept me guessing.
Can't wait to read the next one.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
With the grand re-opening of her Urban Tails Pet Shop just days away, Shell McMillan has her hands full planning entertainment for the event, including a fortune-telling parrot. But her mood is threatened by rumors of the return of Johnny Draco, a former investment guru who swindled money from most of the residents of Fox Hollow and then vanished without a trace. And when the parrot predicts a grim future for Draco and his dead body is found hours later, Shell realizes that people she has come to know are suspects. She investigates to find the truth behind the murder.
I liked the premise of this cozy mystery, and the characters were fun to read about. But I felt that there was something missing in the plot. There seemed to be inconsistencies with certain aspects of the main character’s investigation. I actually went back to read certain parts of the story, figuring that I might’ve missed something. Even though the story confused me at times, the ending was satisfactory. Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for the advanced reader’s copy of this book.
It seemed like it was sooo long since I got to visit with Shell and friends at her shop in Connecticut, but according to my reading record, it looks like it was around a year ago. I absolutely love Aunt Tillie's cat, Purrday that she left to Shell. It's almost like Purrday knows Aunt Tillie probably wanted him to keep that good eye of his on Shell and keep her safe. 'Cause he sure does a good job of that! Who's a good boy? Purrday's a good boy!
This was a super twisty mystery that kept me guessing the whole way. I love how Shell and Gary sleuth together. He cracks me up and reminds me of Castle from TV with his bouncy goofiness and enthusiasm for solving cases--and being ruggedly handsome helps him get info sometimes. I like that he's dating Olivia though. I'm not sure I'd want him and Shell as a couple, but there's definitely a different kind of chemistry with him from acting together than Shell has with Josh. She and Josh seem cute together although we don't get to really see as much of Josh interacting with Shell as we do Gary. It was so hilarious to read his reaction when Shell's mom came to stay for a while, but I think deep down he was loving the attention as much as her mom was!
There were some tense moments in the showdown, but thanks to a certain adorable one-eyed Persian, Shell lived to see another day. I was laughing at the very ending and now I can't wait to see what kind of hilarity takes places in the next book! Just wish we didn't have to wait a year!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
Killers of a Feather is the second in the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries by T. C. LoTempio and is set in the fictitious small CT town of Fox Hollow. The story unfolds with Shell preparing for the grand re-opening of her shop with the entire block filled with daylong events. Then a man stops in at her shop looking for her aunt. It turns out he is Johnny Draco, a man accused of swindling most of the town out of large sums of money. It’s no surprise when he ends up murdered but narrowing down the suspect list will certainly be a challenge.
This book will engage cozy readers, who love small towns and cats, with its variety of suspects and pages of clues. The characters are three dimensional with a number who can only be considered “quirky”. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.) The mystery was solidly crafted and has me looking forward to the next in this series.
This was a great cozy mystery it was well written and not cutsie or cheesy like some cozies tend to be i loved all the different animals throughout the book as well!!!! The mystery itself was great I never even figured it out when I usually can the characters are well written and very likable I highly recommend this cozy mystery to all cozy lovers its fantastic!!!!!
Killers of a Feather is the 2nd book in TC LoTempio's Urban Tails Pet Shop cozy mystery series. It is enjoyable and the characters are great. Crishell (Shell) was an actress but retired and now owns a pet store. She has 2 cats Purrday and Kahlua. Her friend Gary moved to town and Olivia, Ron and Rita are neighboring store owners. Shell is dating Detective Josh Bloodgood. In this book, Shell's mother is coming to visit and she is a diva who is high maintenance. Johnny Draco returns to town. He swindled a lot of people out of money and fled town years ago. No one is happy to have him back. He ends up dead and there is quite a list of suspects including one of Shell's friends. The ending was really good with more going on than expected! #NetGalley #KillersOfAFeather
Shell inherited her pet shop from her aunt and now she's getting ready for a grand re-opening. She has come up with the idea of having a fortune telling parrot as part of the entertainment. That sure doesn't go as planned. Johnny Draco hears his fortune and is soon found murdered. The list of suspects is pretty lengthy because when he left town a few years back, he left a trail of angry townsfolk. Talk was that he had swindled them out of large amounts of their money. As in wiped out of their life savings. Did one of them get revenge? As the police focus on one of Shell's friends as the killer, Shell and her former tv co-star and now current housemate, Gary, set about to find the real killer. With input from her mother (what a character SHE is) and the fact that the investigating detective is her boyfriend, Shell has to hope that her sleuthing catches the killer rather than having the killer catch her.
The mystery is well-plotted with some red herrings to throw the reader off the trail and a couple of great cats - Purrday and Kahlua. The setting of Fox Hollow is well drawn and sounds like a place I'd like to visit. I'm looking forward to future books in this series. My thanks to the publisher Beyond the Page and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second book in the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries series. It was fantastic and I finished it within a day. Shell McMillan is planning an all day festival to celebrate the re-opening of Urban Tails Pet Shop that her aunt had left her. It was a whirl wind especially since her mother was coming into town, hiring new employees, and all while trying to solve a murder. This was such a great read!

This is the second book in the delightful new cozy series "Urban Tails Pet Shop" by cozy author T.C. LoTempio. I enjoyed the first in series very much and appreciate the opportunity for review from NetGalley and the publisher. The author is a favorite cozy author of mine as she writes wonderful pet centered mysteries that are always a fun read. Pets Honey Belle the parrot and cats Purrday and Kahlua's are stars of this fun series.
This next in series finds our protagnist Shell having a grand reopening of her pet shop when her Mother arrives. Added to the excitement is the murder of a nefarious type whose murder leaves many upset over investments with the victim. Shel and her detective boyfriend investigate and Shel is drawn to find out what happened to the victim. I loved this mystery with red herrings, suspects abound and a surprise ending. The animals, birds are a part of the series and truly fun to enjoy reading about. The charcters all add to the story. A fun read to conclusion. I highly recommend this book for all who love pet centered mysteries.
