This novel from Kylie Scott is rather different to others I have read by her. Whilst true to form I adore the characters, there are elements of the storyline which weren’t for me. That doesn’t mean I don’t recommend End of Story to you to read – far from it. I know I am a fussy reader and don’t like something repeated excessively. There were times when I found myself wanting to move past a certain part of the plot (even though it is an important part) which in the end spoiled my overall enjoyment of the narrative. I also felt it was left unexplained and whether Ms Scott wants her readers to come to their own conclusions (which I am certain many will be happy to do), I’m not completely convinced that this has been the correct decision.
What I absolutely love about this story is Lars and Susie. Two wonderful people who come together under strange circumstances. I enjoyed all of their interactions immensely. Their family and friends add so much to the storyline too. In my opinion, every character plays their role very well.
The epilogue closes the story perfectly, so much so that I wish the book had ended there. Whilst I do love to know the finer details of events that happen in narratives, I am not sure that the additional chapters were necessary. I may have my grumbles, but overall I did enjoy Lars and Susie’s story.
3.5-4 stars.
I have to admit that this one took longer than I expected to finish. Normally I devour Kylie Scott's books like my life depends on it. This one, however, I was almost scared to finish. I didn't want to see two characters that I enjoyed so much meet an unhappy end, which the divorce certificate found in the wall suggests. I'm happy to say that I (finally) finished the book and my love of romance novels is still intact. I wish the mysterious divorce certificate had been more fully explained or omitted altogether, but other than that it was another FABULOUS book by one of my favorite authors.
I have read several of Kylie Scott's books, and I can say that this one is very different from what I've read in the past. It took me a bit to get into the book, but I'm glad I stuck with it, because I was pleasantly surprised. This has a different premise where two people, who wouldn't normally interact with each other because of past history, are suddenly face with an impossible mystery. The mystery is of course the finding of the divorce certificate to a marriage that hasn't even happened yet. I liked that the main character stood up for herself, especially after the treatment from her horrible ex, and I also liked the building of the friendship between the two main characters Susie and Lars. The paranormal part of this story was very small and felt a little off. I was expecting more of the story to touch on the "magic" around the divorce certificate throughout the story, but didn't really get. This was a fun quick read and I'm glad I picked it up. Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this ARC.
I would give it a 3.5 ⭐️. I enjoyed the dynamics between Susie and Lars, former acquaintances through her now ex boyfriend. The little mystery that follows them and fuels them is very interesting.
It’s a quick read and I would recommend it to someone for light reading.
This was a really funny and entertaining read! I enjoy how the author created a strong and hilarious female character who stands up for herself and continues to grow throughout the story. The romance was also very sweet and, at times, pretty steamy, which I also loved. If you want a quick and light-hearted read with ample amounts of romance, then this is the book for you!
"The friend of my ex is not my friend!"
This was a fun, romantic, quirky story with an interesting mystery element to it that I really enjoyed. A plus sized friendly story with a character that truly knows her worth and an ex that deserves a kick in the shin.
A really interesting premise where you (think you) know the end before it happens. I found the story interesting enough but something was missing for me. Not my favorite from Kylie Scott but diverting enough for an afternoon.
Whenever Kylie Scott publishes a new book, I know that I'll be up late reading! She doesn't disappoint in this love story where the main couple- Susie and Lars, seem destined for divorce! Susie's relationship with Lars' friend Aaron had ended abruptly six months before. In the interim Susie had inherited a house from her Aunt which needed lots of renovation. Enter Lars who is conveniently a handyman who is there to check out the house and see what needs to get done. Here's where the fun begins. As Lars is checking behind some drywall, he finds a piece of paper which is a final divorce order for the two of them dated ten years in the future. Can two people who find themselves attracted to each other find love even if it has an end date? Great banter and just the right amount of humor. Enjoy!
Great romance with a bit of a fantasy twist. I like how the story developed since the relationship was genuwin. Excellent steamy moments and a good amount of heart.
Ok so I'll start with what is what I've come to love from Kylie - we have a heroine who isn't stick thin and who loves herself as she is. In this book, her ex announces in spectacular fashion that their relationship isn't what she thought it was, but because she knows her worth, she ends things then and there. Moving on in time, she's inherited her beloved Aunt's house and the person doing the reno is her ex's best friend.
Now here's the part that deviates massively from the usual - we have an unexplained event that could be supernatural, could not be - but this event sets the scene for the rest of the story and how the evolution of the relationship from kinda friends to friends to more is steered along by this event. Did I want it to be explained, kinda. At the very end of the book we go back in time and witness several events including the colassal dump from above of her ex at his leaving party, and yet I'm still left questioning who/what was responsible. I thought the purpose to look back was to know but apart from a vary vague hint to the other at the end, I found that bit really didn't add anything to the story.
I actually loved Susie and Lars stumbling around after each other, first massively in denial and doing anything then could to deny things but then the glimpses as they each consider what if about the other until they finally get together. I love Lars having his eyes opened to his friends/extended families less than stellar ways and how he chose Susie when so many others had failed to do so. Kylie does write battereed but not broken characters well.
To me the potential paranormal bit just didn't really fit - I was waiting for a real life explanation and if we weren't getting one, I wanted to see more of the 'other' to help me believe in that. I recommend removing the end (before) scenes that didn't really work and leaving it at it's natural end.
Lars and Susie’s story was very unconventional, completely original, and well written. You get sucked in just like they did upon the appearance of the divorce certificate. What better way to prove this mystery wrong by diving headfirst into a relationship. They did everything right, they got to know each other, and they trusted each other. It was so refreshing!. The incident at Lars’ parent’s anniversary proved how much Lars respected her and trusted her and it was a lovely show of support. The ex/bestie was a total dud and I’m glad Lars learned of his true colors. Susie and Lars were utter perfection once they became invested. You become invested as well, going down this rabbit hole to figure out how the divorce certificate came about. I love how Lars and Susie decided to defy the odds of the certificate. This was a nice refreshing read and you will absolutely love Susie’s personality. The epilogue was really good as well and wrapped the story up in a neat little bow! I felt like we really didn’t need the beginning of the end part, but either way it was a great read!!
Unfortunately, the ARC was a pdf file which I cannot read properly on my e-reader. So I have been unable to read this book and I can't review it.
Enjoyed this cute read and will definitely be checking out other books from this author. Thank you for giving me a chance to read this advance readers copy!
I haven't read Kylie Scott before, but after reading this book, I will keep a look out for more of her books. The premise of the divorce certificate was a little out there, but I really enjoyed the characters in this book.
Kylie Scott has written a lot of my favorite romances and she’s really good at capturing the relationship between the main characters the feelings there. I had expected this book to be the same, but I found that it was difficult to connect to these characters. Personally, I don’t understand the point of the divorce certificate, because you could just as easily fabricate a relationship between them simply because he’s working on her house. I also did not understand the reasoning behind the scenes at the end of the book that feel similar to bonus scenes that you get on a DVD, it was all information that we could extrapolate while reading. For me, this book didn’t work.
This story is one that reels you in. Be prepared to be up all night reading, you won't want to put this one down. A romantic comedy with a quirky hook. The laughs keep coming, but there is more to this story that gives it a well deserved great rating.
I want to start by saying, if you haven't read Kylie Scott, go do that now. I was introduced to her one rainy Saturday afternoon while i was working my job at the public library. The year was 2015. On the cover of the book returned was a sexy tattooed man. That's all it took. After that, I read her back collection and every book since then. I LOVE HER. I even have a drop in character named after me in "Almost famous in a small town" We aren't best friends yet, but i wish. Anywho.
In End of Story, Susie inherits a fixer-upper house from her favorite aunt. She hires a local company but is surprised when her ex's BFF showed up to do the work.
Lars is a bit uncomfortable, but is agreeable to staying on the job. When he begins pulling off portions of the wall, he finds a divorce certificate with him and Susie as the defendants, getting divorced 10 years in the future. At first they both accuse each other, then Susie gets to work on trying to find out what's up with it. After an authenticator acknowledges its technical correctness, he wants nothing more to do with the document. She takes it to a psychic, and a few other wacky places to try to figure out if its real.
In the meantime her and Lars are getting to be closer friends. Lars is very worried about the bro code, and is a serial monogamous dater. Susie on the other hand, never wants to be married, and thinks her ex deserves every bad thing that happens to him (HE DOES)
At first I didn't know if Lars was going to be redeemable. I loved and felt protective of Susie and he was kind of a butthead. Kylie never lets me down though, and it all worked out. The romance was steamy, the banter was fun and witty and i thoroughly enjoyed the side characters. My biggest sadness is im finished the book and have to wait even longer for the next one.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC
Great read. Kylie Scott is a master at witty repartee. Lars and Susie have it in spades, also Susie and her bestie, Cleo are good at the back and forth banter. I like it that the main characters are allowed to show their strength and also their vulnerability. The plot is a little whimsical at times, but all in all, a great read, some parts even LOL funny.
4.5 stars
Another great story from one of my favorite authors Kylie Scott. End Of Story is one of those books that hooks you from the start and you can't stop reading. With charming characters and a well-written story, this one will be a hit with romance lovers who enjoy a little twist!!!
I received an early copy from Netgalley.
I really enjoyed End Of Story! I loved how there was a twist of mystery in the story and it kept me guessing the entire way through. Loved Lars and Susie and Susies Aunts quirky cottage. The story pulled me in straight away and I’ve barely put the book down until I’d finished.
Great romantic feel good read that I highly recommend! Five stars!
