This was a well thought out, clever and charming story. I loved the cast of characters and thought the plot was something a little bit different (in a good and exciting way!). The writing was warm and engaging and the pace never lagged for a second. Really charming, I loved this story.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this novel! One Night in Edinburgh was a sweet story, however, from the beginning I had trouble connecting with Steph. She took all the changes with Conner way too easily for someone who had been in a relationship over 10 years...it all felt a little too Hallmark and easy for me. However, it also did dive into some serious issues later on and was well written, I just wasn't able to connect with the characters enough to be able to say I really enjoyed it. That being said, I think many people will and I plan on recommending it to some friends I know that this will be right up their alley!.
This book wound up being a DNF for me. It was absolutely silly to be honest. The main character was unappealing and annoying. And her family was worse, which I’m not sure was possible.
DNF @ 40%
I cannot explain how much I loved this book! I really loved Steph and Jamie’s story and loved the setting of Edinburgh even more. Such a great romantic read!
One Night in Edinburgh was a cute and romantic story. I love Edinburgh and I was so happy to walk the streets of Edinburgh and to get to know it better through this book. The plot of ok and the characters some more loveable than others but it's still good book to read.
I was part of the book tour through @rararesources for this book and my review date has finally arrived! I finished this book earlier in the month and I just wanted to shout from the rooftops about it. I mean I felt like that whilst reading it also.
Why did I choose to review this book? It’s a book based in Edinburgh and I’m from Edinburgh and I love a romance book, why else?! When an author writes a book based in or around Edinburgh it can be hit or miss on the accuracy of places and if it feels like it transports you there but Nina has got this in the bag! I did some research (asked her on twitter!) and she is from Edinburgh as well as living there now, so she’s a true Scottish Edinburgh person!
When the book starts in the early days of Steph and Connor’s relationship in Craiglockhart High School, it started off well for me as straight away, I know exactly where the author is talking about. I loved reading the street names and places, having been there I was truly able to imagine myself in this book with Steph & Co! Even down to the entrances to get into the Hogmanay Street Party (Which if you haven’t been to, you had to go at lease once in your life!)
Anyway, we are here about the book. The life of Steph who has had her heart broken by Connor and puts on a brave face and still goes out with her friend on New Year’s Eve where she meets Mr tall, dark and handsome, Jamie.
The next morning, they wake up in her bed with her ex Connor ringing the doorbell, so in a panic, Jamie leaves the apartment and forgets to exchange numbers with Anna. Anna, having realised she is actually happier for her relationship having ended and feeling she may have lost out on something real and good with Jamie, sets it upon herself to find him and pops a message on his favourite beer in all the pubs and shops in his local town Leith but with hoax calls and e-mails, she truly starts to lose hope in finding the man that may have been the one!
At last, she finds him when he gets in contact and proves he isn’t some hoax and it’s actually him and they are re-united but something isn’t quite right. He will only see her on weekends, he evades personal questions, won’t let her go back to his place. So what is he hiding?!
When things started to not add up, my brain started whirling. Right, what is wrong with Jamie? Does he have another family. Is he not who he says he is? What is he hiding? I eventually started to put it together and at one point I did doubt my theory but in the end I was right. What I enjoyed about this story is that it’s not only a romance story, it’s one of hardships.
People go through things in life we would never expect to happen to us and we end up in situations we may be embarrassed about but this book shows that it can and it does happen and there is nothing to be ashamed of. It also shows that families are not perfect and it’s OK to stand up for what you believe in and to stand against those who bring toxicity into your life even if they are blood.
I was hooked with this story, the writing style flows, it’s easy to read and you can truly imagine yourself in this book, living this world which is what encouraged me to look into this author’s other books. She has two other books out at the moment that I will 100% be picking up and will be looking out for future books as I have to say it Nina Kaye may be an auto-buy author for me now!
I also have to add a special mention to the salt and sauce. On the fish and chips scene and she just had vinegar on her chips, I was like hang on a minute, us east coasters love a bit of brown sauce on our chips! It was very quickly rectified when even Jamie mentions this to her! For those not familiar with Edinburgh’s fish and chips, we have a brown sauce that is sort of liquified down with vinegar and tastes exquisite. I live in England now and buy tubs of it when I go back home! It’s the small things in life.
Another mention to the friendship of Steph and Connor. I adored the path that Connor went on and it shows that not all relationships have to end badly. I loved their continued friendship and we all need a bad ass, straight talking friend like Anna in our life. They three of them as a team, I loved!
Anyway, the moral of my review is…. this book is mega and you need to read it! Lucky for you it got released yesterday so you can go buy on kindle or physical!
3.5 stars.
What I enjoyed about the book was the originality of the story. It has some developments I certainly didn't see coming and I really liked that. The ending was good too, all the loose ends were tied up, and it certainly wasn't a standard ending.
What I didn't enjoy about the story was the timeline. It got me confused at times, I found it hard to follow and it sometimes felt the story was going too fast in the timeline and that didn't make sense for me. I also felt Steph was a bit naive which annoyed me at times, especially in the beginning.
Overall a good read though, the orginal story definitely made up for the annoying bits!
This one is a real standout! I thought it was sweet yet different than a lot of romances I’ve read.
I liked Steph and Jamie (after awhile- cause that’s be honest he could be frustrating at first), and really rooted for them. The miscommunication trope is not a fave of mine, but this one was different enough that it didn’t bother me.
One Night in Edinburgh by Nina Kaye is the story of Steph and Jamie who meet one day on New Year‘s Eve in Edinburgh as the title of the book already suggests.
Sometimes you just need people you can’t forget and that is what happens to Steph and Jamie, but they have no way of contacting the other. Therefore they have to get creative and that was amazing.
Steph is a person who had some bad relationship experiences in the past and is always wary of new ones, but there were more than some sparks with Jamie. However, after only one night you don’t know a person very well and especially Jamie has some baggage.
I enjoyed this story, but still felt like I didn’t fully get to know the characters and especially in the middle the plot dragged on a little.
Overall, One Night in Edinburgh is a fun and romantic story with a fabulous setting. 3 stars.

I am in LOVE!
Such a sweet romance. An absolute must for everyone who appreciates this genre as much as I do!!
I really enjoyed this book. Being from Scotland myself, I loved the Edinburgh setting. Will read more by this author.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
Steph, is so upset and heartbroken as her relationship with her high school sweetheart has ended after he dropped a bombshell.
So that she can try to forget about it, she goes out with Anna, her friend for New Years. She meets Jamie, but he’s being a bit secretive, which makes Steph have doubts over her relationship.
The story had twists and turns throughout, it was a well written story that had enough intensity to make you think.
I recommend this book.
I was a bit concerned that I wouldn’t like this book after seeing the ratings, but I’m so glad I gave it a chance!
Steph and Jamie’s story is complicated but beautiful. He came into her life after a breakup devastated her, but he brought his own set of issues along. I suppose some will say that Steph was naïve and jumped in too fast, but I think all of that is integral to the story, including her annoyingly privileged family.
I don’t write spoilers so I can’t go much further. The book was well written, very fast moving and heart-breaking. I will definitely look for more by this author.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Thanks for the chance to review this book, One Night in Edinburgh. It was the first I’ve read from the author, but was keen to give it a go because I’m from Scotland and have lived in the capital, Edinburgh. I loved that it was set in the city and so many scenes within the book could be so vividly be pictured.
It was a story full of hope, hoping that each of the characters find their happy end and full of mystery around one of the characters. The main character was different to any I’ve read recently, and loved that she was so caring, compassionate and non-judgemental to the people around her.
Steph has just been left by her long-term boyfriend Connor, who has come to the realization that he's gay. As if that wasn't bad enough, it happens on Hogmanay of all days, which Steph has so been looking forward to. She goes out to celebrate with her friend Anna nonetheless to get her mind off of what happened.
This is where she meets Jamie, who she is immediately drawn to. They spend the night together but unfortunately forget to swap numbers. When she finally manages to track Jamie down again, she thinks she's found her happily ever after. But has she?
Going into this story, I thought it was gonna be a light-hearted love story. But it actually goes a lot deeper than that. The author deals with topics that aren't usually discussed in romance novels, which I enjoyed.
I especially liked the relationship between Steph and her friend Anna, as well as Connor, who quickly becomes her new best friend even though he is no longer her boyfriend. The two have no problem telling Steph that Jamie is behaving weirdly, which makes for a great honest friendship.
The depiction of Steph's family was also important, as it shows us that not everybody has supportive families.
All in all, I enjoyed "One Night in Edinburgh" quite a bit and would recommend it!
Great Read, loved reading something set in my own city too!
Steph has just come crashing out of a relationship with her high school sweetheart after he finally admits to himself he is gay.
To take her mind off her relationship she still goes out with her best friend Anna for New Years and meets her perfect partner Jamie however the more they date the more her friends and family fill her with doubts about her new relationship.
I love the many twists and turns along the way in this book. The story is very similar to most books but a fresh context gives it a new vibe. The use of online dating and how it has changed is also well reflected in the story.
The dynamic between Steph and Connor who is still ultimately her best friend is beautiful and I love the way they remain true to each other throughout the story.
A great feel good story and also has enough depth to make you think. Overall a fab read.
This was a sweet romcom filled so with so many chances & encounters at love. Steph & Jamie meet & loose touch then again reunite but there's too much holding them back so they break up. They meet again but poof! Only for Jamie to dissappear again.
I really liked the hard hitting topics covered & it was tackled. And don't get me started on Steph's family. This was too insta-love & cheesy for my liking.
Thank you Netgalley & Publisher for the ARC, in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved Steph and Jamie, I thought that they were both interesting and well rounded characters that worked really well together and I really enjoyed seeing their story play out. I also loved Connor and Anna as well, they were a great addition to the book. I felt like I figured out what was going on with Jamie pretty early on, possibly because of how it linked to Steph’s job, however that didn’t take away of the enjoyment of the story. I was really invested in their love story and was rooting for them the whole way!
If you’re looking for a cute, second-chance romance with some serious topics woven in this book is for you.
Steph is heartbroken over the break-up with her longtime boyfriend on the night of Hogmanay and bumps into Jamie. They share the perfect night. But, he leaves in a hurry and they don't share contact information. After a lot of effort on her part, they are reunited. Jamie, however, is secretive about his life and this causes them to part. Was that one night in Edinburgh worth it?
This book gives you so many feels! Connor seems like the perfect boyfriend, until he isn't. But, he is such a great friend! I cannot express how much I love Jamie! Even as he is being secretive, you cross your fingers and hope that he has a good reason. Nina Kaye definitely will wow you. You just have to hold on to see if Steph and Jamie can make it work. Steph's family will have you feeling a lot of feelings, most of them not happy ones.
I have read a lot of books lately where the main character has found "the one" and then lost them, only to spend a long period looking for them. There is usually some revelation about whether or not that person is really the one and/or that person finds someone else. This book is the best that I have read out of all of those books.
Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for my advanced copy! I have voluntarily read and reviewed this copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was fortunate enough to start reading Steph and Jamie’s story whilst waiting for a flight to Edinburgh. All the sights came to life as I explored the city and I made the effort to run to Leith one morning to see The Shore area. I enjoyed Kaye’s depiction of a couple’s blossoming relationship but also her portrayal of Steph’s anxiety as more and more alarm bells starting ringing about her new relationship. I didn’t predict the twist but the outcome was suitably happy.
