I’m not typically a character driven novel fan, but it almost felt like this book needed that eye. The transition between major events in the plot were too simplistic and moved quickly with little detail and elaboration. I couldn’t really root for any of the characters.
Fairly predictable and yet different story, easy to read and a nice setting for it. Didn’t love it but didn’t hate it.
This was humorous and emotional in parts. Should Steph give love another chance, or was one night in Edinburgh all she and Jamie were meant to have? The book cover caught my attention straight away and once I had read the book description I knew I had to read it. It did not disappoint!
I’m not 100% sure how I feel about this book. There were a lot of things I enjoyed and some things I didn’t enjoy. The MC kind of annoyed me at times when it came to her love interest as well as some things that dealt with her ex. I did like that there were things I did not see coming and towards the end I needed to know what was going to happen with her. This is definitely a quick and easy read. The flow of it is very good as well.
Thank you Netgalley for this arc in exchange of an honest review.
I really wanted to like this book! The plot seemed fun, cute, and like the perfect material for a good romcom. Unfortunately this was a miss for me. The most important part of rom coms for me is the chemistry the main couple has, and it was sorely lacking in this book. With their one magical night that is supposed to kickstart their whole relationship it just did not give me enough between their relationship for me to be interested or invested later on. The writing felt choppy and a bit messy. I will say that the relationship between the main character and her ex boyfriend helped me feel some attachment to the story.
Nothing in this book stood out as terrible however it was a very forgettable experience.
A lovely romance that begins on a New Year's Eve in Edinburgh. Jamie and Steph meet after Steph has experienced a particular breakup! I was pleasantly surprised by the end that I did not see coming. Jamie is full of secrets and I was looking for him everywhere except where it was. It was a beautiful little love story. Love is always where we don't expect it.
A lot of feelings from the characters but I the reader felt the were unfounded. I didnt feel the feelings and sometimes it reads as a bit ridiculous.
The writing is relaxed and good for a holiday ready whilst drinking cocktails (don't need much concentration).
The concept is great but it needed padded our a little more for me! The main character comes across as a bit of a psycho tbh!
I appreciate what Nina Kaye was doing with this book - introducing complex social issues into a romance. It got me thinking about a lot of things but also felt too extreme. The characters seemed to have these big sweeping conflicts/revelations that the main character immediately got over meanwhile the family characters were so ridiculously awful and she couldn't get over anything they said or did for a while. It just seemed a little too much of everything and I had a hard time believing the love story.
wow a beautiful love story ...definitely a 5 star for me ..the way she fought and never gave up on their love.An unexpected suprising relationship the way they met thank you to the author and her team .I learnt not to give up and have hope..personal favorite
A really cute love story and I really love the setting. The cover is beautiful too. I will be reading more from this author.
As someone who lives in the US, I always thoroughly enjoy reading books that are centered around sweet European romance. This book definitely had that, along with some other good life lessons. Steph is left reeling when her high school sweetheart breaks up with her unexpectedly, until she meets the mysterious and handsome Jamie the very same night her relationship ended. Things ramp up with Jamie very quickly, but he’s hiding something and Steph isn’t able to let that go. Honestly, this book made me fall in love with the supporting characters rather than the main character. Steph chose to ignore some massive red flags, and then found herself shocked when things blew up in her face. She tends to act on emotion rather than logic, and while that is not always a bad thing, it is definitely problematic when that’s all you do. Steph’s best friends, Anna and Connor, reminded me SO much of myself in that they just kept speaking their peace about their concerns, but we’re still there for Steph when it all came crashing down around her. Ultimately, I loved the life lessons this book taught me. You never know the full story of what someone is going through, and when you do know the truth it’s important to approach it with grace and compassion.
3.5/5 Stars. Steph meets Jamie right after her 9-year romance implodes. She spends the night with him, and everything clicks. Steph feels something is a little “off” about Jamie, he seems perfect but after several dates she really knows nothing about him. The romance is there but it was the mystery that kept me reading.
I did enjoy this story and the novel plot line. Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.#OneNightinEdinburgh #NetGalley
Rounding up from 3.5 stars. There was so much to love in this book. Edinburgh is easily one of my favorite cities, and reading this transported me right back there — to the Christmas Market and to weekend trips to South Queensferry most vividly.
The romance here was such a fairytale, too. You could feel the magic of Steph and Jamie’s New Year’s Eve meeting. I do think we could have gotten more development of their relationship after that initial connection, however. While I understood why Steph was so committed to finding Jamie again, more time could have been spent justifying the intensity of her infatuation once they began dating—especially given his suspicious behavior. Her friends did a good job playing devil’s advocate on that, though.
I struggled a bit with Steph’s family as well. Now, mind you, I realize I was supposed to. They’re awful. But their awfulness was almost cartoonish (the sister in particular), to the point that I couldn’t understand why Steph had any relationship with them. This might have worked if she had cut ties with them, but I felt as though I was supposed to care whether they mended their relationship in the end.
All that said, this novel’s ending was otherwise fantastic. I was genuinely surprised by the twist and really appreciated the attention and thoughtfulness that Nina Kaye showed to this topic. Really well done.
Overall, I’d definitely recommend this romance to fans of Edinburgh and love at (almost) first sight. Thank you to Canelo and NetGalley for the early copy!
This was a fun, light-hearted read set in the beautiful Scottish city of Edinburgh. We meet Steph who finds herself unexpectedly single just before New Year. Whilst out drowning her sorrows on New Years Eve, she meets Jamie and falls head over heels for him! When he leaves the next morning leaving no contact details, Steph makes it her mission to find him again!
I liked Steph’s character, although I have to admit I’m not sure I would be so forgiving so quickly with her ex-boyfriend, Connor! I do like how their relationship progressed over the rest of the book though and enjoyed their storyline together. Steph and Jamie worked well together, but I could just feel something niggling at me throughout that pointed to all not being as simple as it seemed with the otherwise perfect Jamie! Jamie is a lovely character though and I really warmed to him from the beginning. Whilst most of the characters were very likeable, Steph’s family were the exception to the rule! They seemed a complete nightmare and I rooted for Steph to put them in their place several times throughout the book!
This was a lovely read, which I enjoyed right from the beginning. It did feel a little unseasonal at the beginning reading about New Year in May, but it got me into the New Year spirit nice and early! The location was perfect, the characters were interesting (including Steph’s family), and the storyline had me wondering ‘will-they, won’t they’ throughout! Heart-warming and easy to read with equal amounts of romance and laughter scattered through it! Would recommend!
The title of this novel is very misleading. Right from the bat this novel comes across as stalker-ish not romantic. I found the other characters to be on point and Jamie had every right to not be as direct. He met a nice girl however that nice girl was very obsessive from one evening with someone, in terms of the extreme she was going to. Unless you are the term: bunny boiler then you most definitely would not do something like that in real life unless you are crazy.
Not my usual type of book, but I love Edinburgh so much, so was keen to read. I'm giving two stars for the beautiful well written descriptions of the city. The storyline wasn't for me, not the authors fault. I didn't find all the dialogue convincing.
I must confess to having some of Nina Kaye's previous releases on my Kindle, but I haven't got round to reading them. However, now I have finished One Night in Edinburgh, I am sure I won't be waiting long before I do read them!
Steph is reeling from the break-up of a long term relationship and ends up spending a magical night with a certain someone on New Year's Eve.
She feels the connection, and is sure he did, too, but the situation is such that he leaves without leaving any contact details.
Cue some creative ways to contact the elusive, but lovely, Jamie, which reap benefits, but uncover other discrepancies in his lifestyle and personality.
Things do work out in the end, but not without a whole lot of kerfuffle, especially from her pretentious family, and concerns from her own close friend Anna and ex-boyfriend, turned bestie, Connor.
It was a fun, easy to read book, which would be perfect as a beach read, or any time read, to be honest!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a charming book with some surprising elements to it. I did get a little weary of Steph’s static character that was - at times - edging her closer and closer to being a rich girl stereotype, rather than a character who is supposed to be endearing and relatable. (Of *course* her family is wealthy and they dine at Michelin starred restaurants. Where was her desire to help the down trodden then?)
But Jamie? Ohhhhhh Jamie. The author hit the jackpot with Jamie’s character - he was likeable, loveable, and the guy you couldn’t help but to root for. Please tell me that Ms Kaye is planning on a series revolving around Jamie’s new brewery!
After a chance meeting Steph is determined to find Jamie. He is perfect the one probably she knows nothing about him and forgot to get his number. Using her knowledge of his favorite beer she makes a trek across the city determined to find him. This book was fun and exciting with an emotional twist. It was such a good read and a great romance. I recommend it to all romance readers!
