I was interested to read this as we hear so much of Alan Turing and Dilly Knox in conection with Bletchley Park but little is known about others who played a big part in breaking codes that helped to end the war earlier than if these clever people had not done the work they did.
I was hoping to learn a lot about Brigadier John Tltman and also Tommy Flowers, but sadly there was more concerning code breaking which I found interesting but little of the man himself. This maybe is due to little information available as staff were sworn to secrecy and at the end of the war records were destroyed due to the Cold War.
Interesting book well researched and well written but wanted to learn more about the Brigadier.
Thank you to NetGalley for sending me a copy.
The Forgotten Giant of Bletchley Park by Harold Liberty is the story of John Tilman. The book is very well researched and very well put together. While it was a bit dense to get through the story was very interesting and the real life dramas were very intriguing.
I had heard of the Forgotten Giant of Bletchley Park from reading other biographies and fictional stories around Bletchley Park during the war years, but it was fascinating to dig deeper into this guys life and learn more about what made him tick.
My criticism is that large swathes of the book were more about how codes are developed and broken and the war work done at Bletchley Park and the War office and less about the man himself. While all very interesting, I did find this slightly disappointing as there's already a plethora of works discussing the code breaking work.
If you want to learn more about the work at BP and code-beeaking than this is definitely a worthwhile book to read.
