Could have been a better read probably if it let go of the details long enough to let us enjoy a scene as it is.
While I enjoyed this book, I think what I missed some formative information set up in book 1 (The Anatalian Soldier). When picking this up, I did not know that it was the middle of a trilogy. There was plenty of entertainment, but it took me longer to understand the connection between the two main characters that was set up in book 1. I intend to pick up and read both books 1 and 3 to see how this all wraps up! I think I would have rated it higher if I had that extra information set up in The Anatalian Soldier
It could've been great, but it wasn't.
Lack of editing, lack of logical sequence, lack of meaningful reactions, lack of finished.
Scenes that could be incredible felt unfinished... like when you devote all your attention to a specific point and leave the rest of the frame pixelated; that's how i felt And I swear I tried to ignore it, but how do you make sense of a half-finished work?
In the same way, unnecessary details are highlighted, while describing fundamental aspects is avoided. This book was a dream came true: a succession of perfectly intertwined incoherent situations; that if you focus on the present your goals are clear, but when you look at the path you have walked, it makes no sense how you got to where you are.
Still, I feel like the author did a good job of defining her characters, highlighting her personality, and better yet: her interactions.
Anyway, I would like to read more of her soon.
The Anatalian Countess felt like too many good ideas, hurried through too little editing. There were subplots and story lines that got dropped or forgotten halfway through, poorly established and often random feeling tangential plots that distracted from any sense of momentum or building action, and what felt like an entirely gratuitous sexual assault scene, handled poorly and too quickly. A personal pet peeve of mine is naming inconsistency; there are names that feel very high fantasy, and then names pulled straight from the lords and ladies of 17th century England -- while incongruous naming conventions don't always reflect a slapdash or under-researched piece, in this book the names felt as much like afterthoughts as everything else. I wanted to believe in the romantic, or even platonic chemistry between the two main characters, but they felt like Hallmark movie highlights reels, and it was very hard to understand their motivations or their direction.
