‘Fortress of Snow’ by Melanie Dickerson was absolutely the sweetest love story. This was s delight to read. Definitely recommend!
Mazy is the apple of her father’s eye but after his unexpected death is thrust into a plethora of unknowns. She is not betrothed and her eldest brother has little care for her. Her other brother, a knight, has limited connections. Mazy is forced to take her life into her own hands in a era where women have little control. Thankfully there is a gentleman out there who has her best interests in mind.
Fortress of Snow is a part of the Dericott Tales, however I read as a stand-alone novel and enjoyed it! A feel good romance where you know they will live happily ever after. Classic and comfortable. 4 stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Review is based on a digital uncorrected proof provided by Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley. Thank you!
Melanie Dickerson is one of my favorites, and I always look forward to getting to pick up new stories by her. I've loved all three of the previous titles in The Dericott Tales, and I couldn't wait to dive right into the fourth. This one actually ended up being my favorite of the series so far, and I read the majority of it in one sitting. The plot was perfectly paced, the mystery kept me guessing, I enjoyed both of the main characters, and I was definitely rooting for their happily ever after.
As keeping with tradition for this author, this title is a loosely based retelling, this one being of the Snow Queen. I'm not super familiar with that particular tale, so I can't speak for how close it stays to the original, but I can say it was a wonderful story that was well crafted and well plotted, and kept me engaged right throughout.
With castles and knights, dastardly villains, nefarious family members, and a hero and heroine who are determined to stand for truth, Fortress of Snow was truly Melanie Dickerson at her best, and I never wanted to see this story end.
I think Berenger is my favorite yet of the heroes from this series, and Mazy was definitely not your typical damsel in distress. I enjoyed how refreshing both characters were, and I think the mystery featured in this one was my also my favorite yet of the series. Many factors were at play, and I loved that it kept me guessing.
Also, I can't conclude my review without gushing over the beautiful cover! I've pretty much loved every one of Melanie's covers, but this one definitely takes the cake!
Final Rating: 5/5.
I'd highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys clean, young adult fantasy, and I appreciated that you'd be able to read this one without being too lost if you haven't read the previous three books beforehand!
Thanks so much to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for allowing me to advance read and review this one!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advance reader copy of this novel from the publisher (Thomas Nelson) via NetGalley. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I've enjoyed anything I've read by Melanie Dickerson, and although this one feels a bit different than her other re-tellings, I still enjoyed it. Mazy is a great character who is easy to connect with. And it's easy to fall for Sir Berenger. ;) Thank you to Netgalley for my complimentary copy.
Mazy’s father’s death sends her on the run from her older brother who wants to marry her off to someone at least as old as her father. She heads to where her younger older brother is working as a knight……the castle of Geoffrey and Delia. There she meets one of Delia’s brother’s Berenger. John, her brother, is a broody, angry young man. He and Mazy wind up in London when he goes to work for the King’s Guard. Berenger sees her there a couple years later as he returns from war to see how the King wants to reward him. The story continues on from there with the two main characters as well as Ro, Ro’s father, Martin, Lady Bristow, Giles and Juliana. The story draws you in fairly quickly and has enough going on to want to find out what happens with Berenger and Mazy.
A complimentary copy was provided by Thomas Nelson via NetGalley. A review was not required and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I only recently found Melanie Dickerson’s fairy tale stories retold, I have definitely been missing out. These stories are delightful with Fortress of Snow being no exception. I loved the main character Mazy, what a beautiful, strong woman. And then there is our hero Berenger. What is not to love about such a good man who happens to be a chivalrous knight. The story moves along at a really nice pace holding my interest on every page. It is a good mix of historical detail, suspense, faith, friendship and a sweet romance. Within the first few pages I didn’t want to put it down.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the opportunity to read for my honest review.
The fourth instalment of the Dericott series by Melanie Dickerson. i enjoy Melanie Dickerson, especially her Hagenheim series and the Medieval Fairytales series. Those two series are great for Christian teen girls. This series falls a little flat for me. The characters aren't as fleshed out. Also, there are some awkward situations where sleeping together is offered (the main characters maintain their purity) but I wish these scenarios where not in the books. I would love a sweet, innocent story line. I purchase books for my church library and the targeted audience of these books is in dire need of acceptable reading material. I wish more authors would direct there talents to this area. I do enjoy the medieval time piece, as I find this fits a lot of young women desire to still live in fantasy about what life could be. It's just plain fun. I just wish there was less reference to the bedroom . I did REALLY enjoy that these characters knew each other for years and their live grew out of respect for each others character and not just a lustful, appearance driven love (as is often the case in Christian romance). So all in all, it's a good storyline, it just could have been great.
I was excited for this book because I have enjoyed Dickerson’s past books but unfortunately I was not able to get into this one. Fortress of Snow is the fourth book in Melanie Dickerson’s The Dericott Tales and it is a retelling of the Snow Queen
I just couldn't get into this book. I read up to 25% but I ended up DNFing it. However I know that there are many who enjoy this book, it just wasn’t my style. So while I will not be reading it, I will say that it does not make it a bad book. I just had a harder time connecting with the story and characters, however I have read some reviews of this book and there are those who loved it.
This is the fourth book in the Dericott series by Melanie Dickerson. Each book is based off a different fairytale, this one is the snow queen. I liked that Mazy had strengths like loyalty and courage plus she can throw knives!
I wasn't as attached the the hero due to his inability to see what was right in front of him but I was always rooting for their HEA. I enjoyed the pace of the book and read it very quickly as a result. It's a nice clean read and is suitable for teens as well as those a little older.
I receive complimentary books for various sources including, Netgalley, Authors, and other such sources. I am not required to write a positive review and have not received compensation. I look forward to reading future books in the series.
Ich hatte nicht gesehen, dass es bereits die vierte Novelle aus der Serie ist. Ich werde erst die anderen drei Bände lesen und dann ein ordentliches Feedback geben.
I have always loved Melanie Dickerson’s retelling of fairy tales. A delight to read, they are such wonderful stories with good characters.
My thanks to Thomas Nelson Publishing for a copy of this book via Net Galley.
I have enjoyed reading this series so much! Fortress of Snow is a delightful addition to the Dericott Tales. If I had a teenage daughter, I would be sharing these books with her. Mazy is a strong female character, placed in difficult circumstances, who manages to face them with bravery and grit while remaining kind. I loved the slow building romance between her and Sir Berenger. This story has real life trials, adventure, intrigue, and the sweetest love story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for access to this arc.
Another enjoyable tale. Mazy learns to be independent and take care of herself when life keeps throwing obstacles in he path. It has adventures, intrigues, and romance (starting off as friends and eventually falling in love). It's an enjoyable and quick read.
I received and ARC copy from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Poor Mazy! My goodness. That girl had it rough once her father died. I loved the fact she knew how to use a bow and throw knives. It always adds a special piece to a woman’s character when she holds her own against others.
Sir Berenger was a gentle soul and one I respected from the beginning. Seeing the difference between him and the “other” knights, it sure puts Sir Berenger in a good light and makes you realize how special it is once you’ve found someone kind.
The adventure was a fun one and I liked how through it all, Mazy followed her heart and continued to be herself amidst the trials she faced.

When her father dies and her brother, Warin, abandons her, Mazy is forced to seek help from her beloved older brother Sir John, who is training knights at the great estate of Strachleigh. While there, she becomes friends with the kind and loyal Sir Berenger. Circumstances then force them apart: Berenger goes to Prague, while Mazy and her brother move to London. There, Mazy puts her knife-throwing skills to excellent use as she defends herself, and she learns to make breads to sell in the market to earn money. Her business is expanding when Berenger returns to London and they are reunited.
Romance is just beginning to bloom when the king offers Berenger a new mission that also serves as a chance for a title: Berenger is to marry the recently widowed Lady Bristow and take over her estate. To Mazy’s dismay, Berenger agrees to go to Bristow Castle to visit her and make his decision.
But Bristow Castle is hiding secrets, and the only person who might be able to save the knight in distress is the damsel Mazy herself.
A fun read! I don't read these stories often, but I enjoy them occasionally between other genre and I really loved the setting in this one, and felt the characters were fun! I loved seeing the friendships and seeing what would happen next. A fun weekend read!
Fortress of Snow by Melanie Dickerson returns to the Dericott universe and family. This time around, readers are introduced to Sir Berenger and his story. There is not much backstory to verify his story, just little snippets of the family Dericott’s story. Readers are introduced to Mazy and her unfortunate story. As the plot moves along, readers receive a deeper glimpse into understanding what makes up Mazy’s sweet personality. She is a caring lady that wants to be loved and cared for, something she did not have after her father passed away. The plot moves forward at a nice pace, keeping me glued to the action occurring on the pages of the story. The romance builds just like the climactic plot. A little sweet at times. Of course, the story does have the happily-ever-after moment near the end of the story. Overall, Fortress of Snow by Melanie Dickerson was an enjoyable story filled with memorable characters and a nice plot. I recommend this novel.
I received a complimentary copy of Fortress of Snow by Melanie Dickerson from Thomas Nelson Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
Fortress of Snow is the fourth book in the Dericott Series. It follows Sir Berenger and Mazy of Wexcombe. It was a cute friends to lovers story. It took a while for Mazy and Sir Berenger to admit their feeling for eachother. Sir Berenger was sent to Bristow Castle by the King in hopes he'd marry the widow Lady Bristow. While there he found things are not as they seemed and he planned to leave. Meanwhile, while Sir Berenger was gone, Mazy learned of somethings about Lady Bristow that could harm Sir Berenger. So she set off to warn him. Sir Berenger had come to the same conclusions as Mazy by the time she made it to Bristow. They both raced to London to warn the King of Lady Bristow. After the Kings decision, Sir Berenger and Mazy were able to live happily ever after.
Melanie always does a great job of putting faith elements in her stories that aren't to over powering.
Thank you to Melanie Dickerson and NetGalley for my review copy of Fortress of Snow.
Loved this book! A delicious new installment in Melanie Dickerson's Dericott Tales series, this book has a wintry theme as did it's predecessor, "Veil Of Winter". I love how Mrs. Dickerson makes her characters realistic and true to life with faults and fears they have to overcome with the help of a friend or confidante. I definitely prefer my books to be this way. Can't wait to read her next book!
Thank you to Netgalley for a e-copy of this book. A positive review was not required, and the thoughts above are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc.
I'm pretty disappointed in this book. Normally I love Dickerson's stories but this one lacked the same feelings as her previous. Most of the plot time was spent in the exposition and the main two characters feel like carbon copies of previous ones she'd written. Despite being physically and mentally capable, Mazy is still treated as weak which really bugged me. The resolution felt super rushed because there wasn't much time spent building up to a resolution.
