I've tried to finish this again and again, especially since I'm really interested in the subject matter, but it's so patronizing and repetitive I had a hard time even opening the book and ended up dnf-ing it. It needs some serious work by an editor, and I'll give the publisher the benefit of the doubt and won't post this on Goodreads on the hopes it gets some extra treatment.
How do you find out what classical music is? Music in schools is not taught in schools. (I am not talking about learning to play an instrument in the school band or orchestra). The author has written a book that is a layperson’s guide to common musical terms, instruments, the “styles” form and structure of this music. He includes selected composers and influential works. He includes a brief history of the different periods of music that make up the evolution of classical music. Interesting facts about composers and their works are included. At the end of his book, he discusses ways to create interest in young persons for classical music. I loved revisiting the different eras of classical music and his recommendations for the different eras and composers. It’s a good book to use to discover what classical music is all about. Anyone can read this book who has a curiosity about classical music.
In the introduction to this title, the author asks questions about why many “young people” don’t listen to classical music now. Several answers are proposed. Past masters of engagement including Britten and Bernstein are noted. The author also points out that for this music to continue to be available, new audiences will need to be brought into the fold.
The author states that he is not attempting to create converts. He does, however, want to explain in a simple and engaging way some of what makes classical music interesting and intriguing.
This book does exactly what it sets out to do. Within these pages is a fine introduction to classical (western) music. There are section on everything from Classical Music Periods to, the Symphony, the Concerto, the Opera, The Instruments and more. There is also a section on Classical Music Jargon. One aspect of this book that I especially liked were the many recommended listening sections.
Although this book is addressed to “young” people, anyone who wants to better understand this musical tradition might well enjoy this title. I know that I did.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Middle Passage Press for this title. All opinions are my own.
