Thank you Tantor Audio and Netgalley for this advance audiobook copy for A Game of Retribution by Scarlett St Clair (book 2 in the Hades Saga Series). Recommend reading this series in order.
I been interested in reading more Hades and Persephone retelling. So was glad to get this. First I will say it took me awhile to get into the narrator of this. I thought he did great when in other characters but when Hades was not interacting with others or description of the book it took me a while to get used to his style. I felt like he shined more as other characters. When he was Hades he came a live for me when he was with the Persephone character and when the angry part of Hades came out. As Hades it took me 30 %of the book to really get into the narrative.
As far as the book I enjoy what we got from Hades and Persephone as a couple. They where the highlight for me. Even with the slow start for me I enjoyed the book and can’t wait to read Scarlett St Clair more.
Giving it a 3.75 star rating (upgraded to 4 stars on this rating system).
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I read this as an audiobook and I’m conflicted on whether or not I would’ve enjoyed it more had I read an e-book or physical copy. The narrator did a wonderful job, don’t get me wrong, but it did feel one-dimensional for a lot of his reading. I did rather enjoy his take on Hermes though!
In terms of the story, I did find at times I was very invested, and then within the span of a minute I could easily lose track of what was going on. I enjoyed it all for the most part, but I’ve read quite a few Hades and Persephone retellings and I fear that they are all starting to mesh together at this point… perhaps that has impacted my view? I will say however, there is a very nice amount of spice in this read! However, I don’t know if that alone would entice me to read further into the series.
If you enjoy a good Hades and Persephone spicy read, definitely consider picking this up!
The second book of Hades Saga - is a retelling of Hades & Persephone.
Needless to say it's always a good time to read Greek mythology.
The good part was the story had elements of various Greek gods, limelighting their habits of leisure, to what extent will they go for the sake of fulfilling their own wishes & the entanglement of fates giving you all you want... but just not the way you may like .
However more than half of the book was simply filled with erotic romance and to me that's just not what the main content of a book should be...
I would have been happy to see more details in storyline, a buildup of character relationships justifying why they are the way they are.
Overal a ☦️☦️☦️/5
This book was a lot of fun. I loved it as much as the first one and can't wait to get my own copy for my own library.
I typically do not read fantasy books, but I fell in love with Scarlett’s Hades and Persephone series so I have continued to read their story in Hades’ POV as well. I love any Hades and Persephone retelling so I will read any release about them.
In Game of Retribution, we see Hades’ POV of a Touch of Ruin. It has a lot more detail of what went on behind the scenes during this point in Hades and Persephone’s relationship.
Hades point of view on his relationship, as well as his role as a God, is extremely intriguing. We see how deeply he loves her and is quite literally willing to fight to the death to keep her in his life. The couple has countless roadblocks to their relationship, many that Persephone isn’t even aware of. Hades works to get rid of every single one and I loved learning all these things that we didn’t in TOR. It makes you love Hades even more.
Both Hades and Persephone keep busy in their personal lives, so much of this book is actually more about Hades than the couple together. There are still plenty of scenes with them and the whole focus is on them, but we see Hades privately in his role as a God. Whether it’s dealing with things in his realm, coming to Persephone’s rescue, completing grueling tasks for their relationship, or discovering a potential for war, Hades is extremely busy.
Scarlett is very knowledgeable in Greek mythology and it is super interesting to learn about throughout her stories. Obviously this series is a modern retelling so there are many present day aspects, but to it’s core it’s based on the original plot. She provides a ton of details and makes it exciting to read, especially from Hades’ POV being God of the underworld.
I listened to the audiobook performed by Tyler Donne and it was my first book I listened to narrated by him. I always imagine Hades as a certain way with a certain voice and I feel like he emulated the idea of him in my head. I really enjoyed his narration and he voiced the other character’s well too.
A Game Of Retribution (Hades Saga #2) is perfect timing to help fill part of the void waiting on the next ATOD book release.
I can’t get enough of Hades and Persephone together. I love Scarlett St. Clair’s spin on the Greek gods.
She does such a great job paralleling the events in A Touch of Ruin. I never realized how much is left out when a story is from only one point of you. I love being able to hear Hades point of view and what was going through his head during all the major events.
You get more drama, more enemies to lovers vibes, and just more HADES!
Loved it and can’t wait for more!
Thank you so much #NetGalley for letting me review this ARC!
Thank you to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for the opportunity to review this story and audiobook.
A Game of Retribution by Scarlett St. Clair is book #2 in the Hades & Persephone saga that is from Hades point of view. They pair well with A Touch of Darkness, A Touch of Ruin and A Touch of Malice by the same author. I'm definitely looking forward to book #3 from Hades point of view.
In A Game of Retribution, Hera, Goddess of Women asks Hades to help her overthrow Zeus. Daddy Hades is having none of that though, so Hera puts Hades through a series of labors that increase in impossibility with every new task.
There is something endearing about Hades, that leaves you rooting for him every step of the way. And the spicy-ness from his point of view? Pure perfection!
Will Hades make it through these labors while still keeping the love alive between him and Persephone? You do not want to miss out on this! Grab your copy on 5/31.
As a side note, I listened to both audio books for this series and was not a fan of Tyler Donne's narration. For me, his voice seemed robotic and I usually am entranced by narrators that seem to "become" the characters they are narrating.
I love getting to hear Hades POV of this series and all the things that are going on that you have no idea about reading persephone's. Lived up to expectations from the rest of the series and looking forward to the next one.
I received this and ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!
I have followed this entire series so I was so excited when I got an advanced copy of this book!
I wanted so bad to love Persephone more but seeing it from Hades’ point of view just makes me more irritated with her choices. Plus the fact that Hecate sides with her is just something I don’t understand…even when she’s clearly in the wrong.
It’s a great story and I absolutely love from Hades’ point of view better than Persephones.
I will continue to read the series and anything Scarlett does because she’s an amazing author.
A Game of Retribution is the second book from the POV of Hades and compliments A Touch of Ruin (Persephone’s POV) while building out its own plot and expanding on the world.
After refusing to aid Hera in her plot to overthrow Zeus, the Goddess retaliates by tasking Hades with a series of trials to prove his love for Persephone in return for Hera’s blessing for them to marry. As the trials draw him away from Persephone, Hades will have to face the weight of his actions to maintain balance between his duty as God of the Dead and his future with Persephone.
I adore Greek mythology retellings, and Scarlett’s A Touch of Darkness and A Game of Fate books are undeniably addictive. While there is the necessary crossover between the two POVs, the Hades Saga adds another layer and depth not only to the story but also to Hades’s arc. While both POVs are special, Persephone’s POV is a great way into the universe and Hades’s POV provides a balance that bridges their two worlds together. Plus, there’s more Hermes and Hecate!
As for the audiobook, the narrator was great and did the story justice.
Overall, 4.5/5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for this audiobook arc in exchange for an honest review.
Let me start by saying Scarlett st. Clair is an auto read author for me so I was thankful to receive this arc!
This story was just as amazing as the rest of hers, I’m a sucker for retellings and spice so I love that it has both. I truly enjoyed the characters and world building while modernizing it.
The reason I’m giving 4 instead of 5 is that god awful audio. I can’t with that guys voice… just not a successful narration.
“I would’ve chosen you a thousand times over, the Fates be damned.”
yes, i absolutely love books that have dual povs! in the main books we get Persephone's pov & in these series we get Hades's pov. I love book that have greek mythology characters in there. And this series by Scarlett St. Clair gives a modern twist to the books.
i received this arc from NG & this is my honest voluntary review. I love the audiobook, and i will be purchasing a physical copy of this book as well.
Received a copy for review.
I really loved the beginning if this story. Getting Hades perspective is a bonus. Each character has a different view and that shapes the story in a different way.
I liked this addition to the original story and look forward to where it will go next.
I mean, I have nothing else to say except wow!
The narrator does a fantastic job with voicing the characters, especially Hades. I have loved the Hades x Persephone series so far and really enjoy getting Hades’ POV.
Game of Retribution has the storyline previously told from Persephone’s POV, but also adds some behind the scenes stuff with Hades. This way we still get a new story and it’s not just a rehash of a previous book.
Pacing, writing and characters are great!
Can’t wait to read the next one!
Thank you NetGalley for sending me a copy of A Game of Retribution by Scarlett St. Clair
I am beyond impressed with Scarlett St. Clair's abilities' to weave the A Touch of Darkness series and the Hades saga together . This book is from Hades POV during the events of A Touch Of Ruin, but it still feels like its own book. The series together have enough moments of Hades and Persephone being together that its still a romance, but allows those moments apart for the characters to go on there own journeys .I read A Touch of Ruin when it first came out so my memory of it is a little foggy , but it was fun to go through Hades POV and have those moments of " Oh right! I forgot!"
I read this book via audiobook and I do not have anything negative to say about the narrator. That said I do not have anything positive to say ether. It was just a generic audiobook.
I can not wait to read more by Scarlett St. Clair and see where Hades and Persephone's story goes.
This audiobook was really good. I like the narrator and the story. I am so happy I can say that I liked this one a bit more than the first Hades book.
I wasn’t sure about this series but omg I’m in LOVE! I’ve been obsessed with the mythology retelling and this one is very similar. Highly recommend if you like spice
I always love reading the Hades POV counterparts to the A Touch of Darkness series. But unfortunately, I just did not like this story for Hades and Persephone. I feel like they mainly just argued and misunderstood each other for the entire book.
I love the side characters in this like Hecate and Hermes.
A Game of Retribution by Scarlett St Clair. I wanna thank you for giving me an audio book . Ok let's five into it frankly speaking it was a repetition of A touch of ruin the only thing that kept me going was Hades. Just love him. I wanted to know what he was thinking when lexa met with an accident and also when Persephone goes mad in the garden of despair wanted to know at that point what Hades was thinking and also when Persephone saves lexa soul that made my day. You are truly a gifted writer Ms Scarlett love from India. I can't wait for the next part and hope i am given an opportunity to review your next book as well❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This book was entertaining but at times it felt like fan service (which I guess many books telling the same story with another POV feel that way). To me it felt like the author tried to fix plots fans May not have enjoyed (I know I personally didn’t) in this one even if they didn’t make complete sense. I’m personally a little over how toxic hades and Persephone are but this book did make me extremely excited for the next one so that’s a great thing. Also I wish we got stories of so many other gods!
