Thank you to the publisher and Netgally for providing me with an ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I LOVED THIS!! Both of the leads were super likeble and interesting and had a great dynamic, both together and apart. I enjoyed both of their POV"s. I also really loved the way the romance progressed. I don't want to spoil it but the obstacles in their way made sense- nothing felt unrealistic or like some silly miscommunication, I could totally understand how this could happen. I also really appreciate the way the characters handle the challenges they face.
I can't wait to read more from C.N. Holmberg and am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed the narration of the audiobook and would highly recommend the audiobook.
A cute, slow burn office romance between Blaine and Lysander. Super clean, no smut whatsoever, so it's perfect for those who aren't into spicy books. The story is about Blaine, an office girl who's had a crush for the past 2 years on Lysander, the geek who works in IT. Blaine didn't have the courage to tell Lysander how she felt about him. Lysander went back from his wellness Sabbatical and now he's transformed into a hottie and Blaine meets him again. Blaine then finally decides to tell Lysander how she truly feels.
The dual narration is great as it provides the POV of each main character.
Big thanks to RB Media and NetGalley for giving me access to the audiobook ARC of You're My IT by C.N. Holmberg in exchange for an honest review.
Kelsey Navarro and Tim Paige brilliantly narrate C.N. Holmberg’s You’re My IT, Nerds of Happy Valley #1, in first person dual-POV. I decided to listen purely based on the cover, nerdy protagonists, roller derby, and, of course, my weakness for friends-to-lovers and pining. I can never resist this duo, but add nerdy protagonists and roller derby? My curiosity was piqued. I was not disappointed. Once I started, I couldn’t stop listening to it at every chance. It’s that amazing! I loved You’re My IT from start to finish. Holmberg’s story is refreshingly original, funny, romantic, and resonates with authenticity and emotion. I love her complex, quirky, nerdy, likable, down-to-earth characters with their vulnerability and stunted romantic and emotional development. I can so relate. Holmberg’s vibrant description and lively, colorful dialogue, and narrative style give the novel fast pacing and a mostly lighthearted tone. I enjoyed every second I spent laughing, holding my heart because of the angst, and hating the reluctant need to kick Lysander’s butt for causing my girl Blaine pain by being an oblivious jerk and taking his issues out on her.
Roller-derby-blocker Blaine’s track record for confessing her feelings is a nightmare. From being dismissed to losing friends to becoming a viral sensation, Blaine has given up on romance until she falls for Lysander. He’s an IT guy at her new job with whom she becomes friends her very first day. But in the back of her mind, she still has doubts. So, Blaine spends the next two years pining for Lysander, trying to work up the courage to tell him how she feels. She believes they’d be great together with their rapport, shared love of superheroes, and matching senses of humor and sarcastic natures. Falling deeper for him every day, Blaine promises herself to finally tell him once he returns from his transfer to California. Aloof, funny, and shy, Lysander suffers from low self-esteem and struggles to figure out where he fits. After his father has a health scare, Lysander decides to improve his own and loses 50 pounds in the meantime. Now, the world views and treats him entirely differently, particularly women, while Lysander still feels like the same invisible person who doesn’t fit in anywhere. Even though he finds a potential girlfriend on his first try with online dating. When Lysander returns apparently attached, Blaine’s afraid she’s waited too long to tell him how she feels.
Narrators Kelsey Navarro and Tim Paige bring Holmberg’s delightful novel to life with voices that wonderfully fit Blaine, Lysander, and the secondary characters, even when switching to narration for the opposite genders. Although both superbly differentiate between the characters giving them distinct voices and capturing their personalities and moods for all scenes. I love Navarro’s narration for Blaine and Lysander the most. Her voice for Blaine makes her sound like one of the heroines from a classic movie and fits her self-deprecating, sarcastic, and low-key character to me. Navarro’s deeper timbre and softer inflection for Lysander differentiate his voice from Blaine. Paige’s narration for Lysander perfectly captures his character’s shy, sweet, gentle, guarded personality. While his voice for Blaine isn’t quite as weird-sounding as the female character’s voices tend to be when narrated by male narrators, I think Navarro’s narration suits her personality better.
Through the eyes of her protagonists, Holmberg thoughtfully explores issues of self-esteem, self-acceptance, confidence, self-love, and adjusting one’s self-image after weight loss and changes in appearance with nuance and sensitivity. With humor and sarcasm, she also examines the soul-crushing awfulness of office culture when you work for a passive-aggressive, controlling supervisor.
A poignant, sweet, funny, charming, romantic love story with authentic, relatable characters, You’re My IT is highly recommended for audio listening. If you like nerdy heroines/heroes, friends-to-lovers, pining, crushes, office romances, roller derby, and a bit of painful angst, that’s 100% worth it—you should check this one out!
CW: Self-esteem issues, fat-shaming, parental illness
The love story in this was cute and fun. I was a little frustrated by the body-transformation time jump because I immediately knew what the issues were going to be for the couple. I enjoyed them a slightly chubby couple in the start and was looking forward to that story. I don't enjoy a story full of constant body-image self-doubt.
That said, the story was well-told up until the final chapters. Around the 93% mark I started flipping tables and swearing when the author introduced a totally unnecessary twist and then crammed together a wholly unsatisfying HEA in the last couple chapters. At 92% we already had a very satisfying HEA and all that was needed was a cute epilogue telling us about their current job situations and describing the cute roller skate themed bridal shower thrown by her derby team... instead we got nonsensical stress. This book should be a 4 star, but because of the bad ending I can't rate it higher than a 3.
Thank you to Net galley, C.N Holmberg and Tantor audio for my advanced listener copy. Here is my honest and voluntary review!
I am so glad I picked this one up! It was a quick listen. I listened to this in one day! I really enjoyed the narration. I love a good I like her, she likes him, but I don't think they like me back trope. This was a quick and fun office romance. I loved how spunky the main character; Blaine was. she was a fun loving, hardworking roller derby girl who falls for the new guy at her IT company, but she never has the nerve to tell him because of all the disasters that happened with other men she confessed her love to. I loved how Lysander and Blaine's relationship just exploded and took off once she told him how she felt. it was raw, and real. I loved how sweet they were. just found out there is a second book! can't wait to pick it up!
"Have you tried turning it off and on again?" If only love was that simple.
What a cute audiobook! Lysander is Blaine's IT Specialist, and as they form a friendship mostly through instant messaging, Blaine realizes her favorite parts of her day are when they chat. Blaine has been guarded with dating since she's been rejected before; Lysander is shy, nerdy, and not everyone's type. Blaine has cautiously dropped hints of her growing interest, but aloof Lysander is soon sent to California for a lengthy work transfer. In the meantime, Blaine is working up the courage to confess Lysander is "IT" for her, but her crush returns with a new physique and a girlfriend in tow. Lysander soon realizes that women who wouldn't have swiped right before are now showing interest, and assumes that Blaine's confession is an indication that she's as superficial as the rest. This was a quick and refreshing friends (to enemies) to lovers office romance, and I appreciate that the body image was explored through the male perspective/Lysander's journey. We see that the rejection (as shown through both of the main characters) chips away at our self-worth and worthiness/acceptance of love. Holmberg's story is so relatable. I especially enjoyed this as an audiobook with its dual narration/perspectives.
Thank you Netgalley and Tantor Audio for this advanced copy.
You’re my IT is book 1 of The Nerds of Happy Valley series by author CN Holmberg. It is a standalone, contemporary romance. Dual POV with a happy ending.
Tropes:
❤️ Slow burn
❤️ Workplace romance
❤️ Both main characters secretly crushing for years
My thoughts:
The romance between Blaine and Lysander was a particularly slow burn where both have liked each other, but because he had some body issues and was also a tad clueless, he never acknowledged Blaine’s subtle and not so advances.
A couple of years passed and Lysander lost weight while on an away job. When he comes back, Blaine flat out lets him know about her feelings towards him. Sadly, he believes she only noticed him romantically because of his body transformation. It takes them a bit more time to get on the same page but it’s close to the end which made the story feel rushed.
I enjoyed the performance by the narrators Kelsey Navarro and Tim Paige which made the characters come to life.
This was a cute, clean, contemporary, slow burn office romance. Both protagonists Lysander (I.T. nerd) and Blaine (roller derby girl) have issues--Lysander with his body and self image and Blaine with her horrible luck in finding love which has also led her to feel the prick of cancel culture (thanks to her ex-best friend)--and it was good to see that both refuse to let their issues define them even though it takes them some time to get to that point. I listened to the audiobook which was short and quick and was narrated well by both the narrators Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro.
My thanks to NetGalley, the audiobook publisher Tantor Audio and the author for the audio Arc of the book. It looks like this is the first book in the 'Nerds of Happy Valley' series.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐✨💫
This is an adorable romcom about two co-workers in the IT field.
Blaine has been pining for her friend and co-worker Lysander for years. During this time, Blaine worries that Lysander doesn't reciprocate her feelings while Lysander is on a health journey and until recently didn't believe he was what Blaine was looking for.
It's almost painful reading about these two continuing to circle around each other without any one just putting themselves out there, but the story is cute and the characters are really good. I enjoyed all the instant message conversations which gave a different writing style for a good part of the book.
I listened to the audio book of this one and the narration by both the male and female narrators was spot on. They were both great at showing emotion in their voice when appropriate and were a great fit for these characters.
This is the first book in the Nerds Of Happy Valley series and I will definitely be checking out the other books when they come out.
Thank you to Tantor Audio for the ALC in exchange for an honest review.
Apologies -- the netgalley app is glitching on my phone and won't let me listen so I am unable to listen and review. I am disappointed as I was looking forward to it.
This was cute lighthearted fast paced story. I enjoyed the chat avatars and challenges they faced. I felt the relationship was realistic.
4.5⭐️
I loved this and especially the ending❣️And can we pause for just a minute and just talk about how clueless (dumb) men are?! Ugh.. moving on.
FYI this is a clean romance and it was a fun and a well written novel. I haven’t read anything like this one before. It focused on “real” things going on now. Examples were , smart carbs, instant messenger, stigmas on body image and the realities of social media. Nothing to deep but realistic nonetheless. I really like the MC, they were adorable.
Will I listen to another audiobook by this author? Definitely❣️
This was narrated by Tim Paige and Kelsey Navarro and they were awesome. Listening time 6 Hours, 2 Minutes.
Thanks Tantor Audio via NetGalley.
I’ve left my review on FB, Instagram l, Amazon, B&N, BB and Kobo.
The character building and overall build-up of the storyline was perfect. The story was easy to jump into and I found myself not wanting to stop reading it. I have to admit that the ending felt rushed and left me feeling incomplete. So much of the book was spent building their friendship and connection, as well as hyping up the romance between the two. And just when things finally start happening, the story is told in month and season chunks and then it's over. I wish more time had been spent on their love story after they rekindled instead of rushing through the next months with little story behind it. Even if it meant the book was twice as big haha. I also wish we had more of Lysander's side of the story!
Overall, I would definitely recommend reading this novel. It was a lovely story full of real-life, everyday experiences and struggles with friendship, new love, careers and horrible bosses, weight-loss and body image, and misinterpreted feelings / moments.
The audiobook narrators, Kelsey Navarro and Tim Paige, were wonderful. Both voices seemed to match what I pictured Blaine and Lysander to be in my head, and both did a great job capturing the emotion behind every scene!
Thank you NetGalley, Tantor Audio, and C.N. Holmberg for this advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
4 stars for a nerdy, techy, IT-related romcom~
The book itself: This was a fun and quirky IT office romcom. The characters are especially different and refreshing with some fun personality traits and hobbies. Blaine loves to roller derby and has been humiliated online via a "viral" incident. Lysander is a nonchalant IT guy with a hidden sense of humor that ends up going through a great deal, changing who he is entirely. Blaine wants to profess her love but runs into some challenges along the way.
The narration: I really enjoyed it, I liked how there were multiple characters involved in the narration and it was also quite lively.
As always a thanks to NetGalley and Tantor Audio for the audiobook copy!
This book was so freaking cute. I didn't want to stop listening to it!
Narration: A+
Story/plot: Adorable
Main Characters: Bad Ass!
Love Story: 100% enjoyed!
This was a fun read. I definitely recommend it!
I loved this book. It was definitely not like other books where the MC pines away and gets guy in only a couple chapters. This character put in WORK for this relationship and I was here for it. I liked that the MC had an interesting hobby and that she wasn’t this perfectly put together person but rather someone trying to keep her life together and looking for love. Lysander was a sweet character and I liked how timing played a huge role in this story. Overall, a great listen that I couldn’t stop listening to. I’d definitely recommend others check this story out.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the ARC.
I've not read any of C.N .Holmberg before so I was happy when I got this arc , as I'm a sucker for a good romcom , but this was fantastic .
So Blaine has a bit of a bad luck when it comes to dating if you ask me all three was total pigs. We all had that ex !
SO Blaine hopes for fourth time to be a charm with Lysander ., and may I say that Lysander is the hottest nerd on the block if you as me . but the part that means the most to me is that Blaine loved Lysander before he lost 50lbs I think that a great message , so when Lysander comes back from California where he been working , Blaine takes her chance to tell him how she has felt about him for a long time but fate comes between them and he story goes from there I don't want to give anything away . .
I loved how you hear the story for both sides also very faced paced, such a great feel good romcom really heart warming ,easy read , and will have the butterfly's flying round your tummy , always routing for both characters .I think your in a book slump this will drag you out of it . I look forward to more from this author.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced audiobook of ‘You’re My IT’ by CN Holmberg. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’ve liked books by this author in the past and was eager to pick up this contemporary romance. The story was quick to read. But I’ll admit I’m not a great fan of books with a lot of texting and emails and messenger exchanges which were abundant in this story. There were even descriptions of the GIFs being used.
The timeline threw me a bit as well. We see the main character and the love interest meet and then kind of fast forward to where she’s already secretly in love with him. I felt as a reader I kind of lost the opportunity to root for their relationship as much. The miscommunications keeping the couple apart made a lot of sense and there were so many almost moments where the couple just missed getting on the same page which I thought was done well and didn’t feel forced in the story.
There’s a lot of talk of fat shaming in the book. The male love interest is initially heavy and takes control of his health and loses weight. It’s not something I’ve read much of in contemporaries so that was a nice change. I’m not sure how well it was utilized as it doesn’t come across very fat positive. The book does show the male main character struggling with the person he was before he lost weight and the attention he gets afterwards.
There’s also some medical drama that was kind of shoved in at the end of the book to force the couple apart. I would have preferred it to be happen a little earlier in the story. The ending all felt really rushed although it was a change of pace for the third act pulling the couple apart.
I felt like this book created an interesting world and believable characters so I will be picking up the next book in this series when it comes out. The narrators did a great job too.
3/5 stars
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read You’re my I.T. By C.N. Holmberg in exchange for my honest feedback.
Blaine has had a crush on Lysander for two years and when she finally has the courage to say something to him he shrugs her off thinking it’s due to his new makeover. Very cute office rom-com.
**please note due to low rating I will not be leaving a public review for this book as I have not paid for it.**
Loved the cover. Very eye catching
Disliked both narrators. There voices were not pleasant to my ears
Also disliked both main characters so overall this book wasn't for me.
First time trying this author and even though I didn't like this book I would absolutely try the author again.
