Great voice. Did a fantastic job with all the characters
Story 3 stars
First time trying this author.
Her writing is fun, with light hearted characters and an engaging story.
Would definitely try Meredith Schorr again.
As Seen On Tv by Meredith Schorr was everything I hoped for in this small town romance read. Think Gilmore Girls in the fall and that is what I envisioned while reading about Pleasant Hollow as the novel takes place in the autumn. I found the characters to be interesting and well developed with great banter. Its an adorably charming yet relatable read with several humorous moments and added pop culture mixed in.
Hallmark-loving NYC native Adina Gellar is tired of the city life—she’s living with her mom in an apartment they’re about to be unable to afford, she’s done with city dating and is struggling to find her next story to pitch to help her achieve her dream of being a journalist. So she goes to Pleasant Hollow where a developer is going to build up and she’s convinced it’s right out of a made-for-TV movie… only it’s anything but and the on it person she’s drawn to is the project manager of the development: Finn. This book is light and fun, filled with Gilmore Girl, The Bold Type, Hallmark and Sex and the City references that really made me smile. And I loved this small town was anything but welcoming, but the characters were still so enjoyable and fun. The town is so quirky and I loved watching Adina’s quest for her story as she kept finding the people of Pleasant Hollow were ready for the development. I do feel like Adina was a little selfish and immature at times, and that did get frustrating in bits, but I enjoyed this book. And I loved her best friend Kate and her mom and Finn. Finn was so genuine and charming and I loved he felt like a Hallmark hero but was in the big city guy role. It was a fun twist with a quirky adventure, and it was just a fun read to get lost in. And I really liked the banter and dialogue and the writing overall. Pleasant Hollow may not have been Stars Hollow but the town shined in this book in its mediocrity and I liked the uniqueness of the side characters and I loved Adina’s growth and story!
3.5/5⭐️
I've had AS SEEN ON TV on my tbr since September 2020 -- you could say I was eagerly awaiting this one!
A woman journalist, frustration with dating in NYC, a small-town setting... it checked so many boxes for me! Adi is trying to get her career off the ground, hustling for freelance gigs, when she pitches a story about a real estate magnate targeting a tiny town and threatening the locals' way of life.
The narration is good. Emily Lawrence is a professional who's narrated 450+ audiobooks (recently, Atomic Anna and A Brush With Love).
But the storyline just isn't quite working for me. Adi keeps acting in a way that I think is supposed to portray a rather green reporter, but comes off as an indication that journalism is not a good fit for her, so the questions of whether she'll get this story and land a full-time staff position lose steam.. A third of the way in, there have been some scenes between the two love interests, but nothing that's gotten me hopeful or excited about the prospect of them ending up together. The idea of a city girl being a fish out of water in a small town, when her preconceived notions are dashed, has a lot of promise but the execution so far isn't for me. DNF at 33%.
Of course, YMMV -- I think this book will work best for readers who are avid Hallmark movie viewers (there are several references throughout) and into the slow burn. I'd also recommend it to those who enjoy coming of age/growing up storylines, as I think 25-year-old Adi reads fairly young.
Who doesn't love a good Hallmark movie? The towns, characters and romance are the stuff of dreams. But, when you're from a big city, like Adina, the small town fantasy portrayed on Hallmark and in romantic comedies seems to correlate with small towns. So, Adina sets off to capture a Hallmark-esque story of her own in a small town, only to quickly realize not all small towns are as portrayed in the movies.
"As Seen On TV" was a love story to rom coms and Hallmark all at once. Taking on the financial, romantic, economic, and housing struggle stereotypical of big city living while shattering Adi's romanticized feelings towards small towns. With heavy themes playing out, including some intense family dramas, this read keeps it light hearted but real. With steam and passion, heartbreak, and headaches, this read was everything.
Having grown up in a Hallmark-esque small town, author Meredith Schorr captured the NYC stereotypes and small town stereotypes so perfectly it was comical. Adi and Finn were the perfect lead characters and the supporting cast was absolutely hysterical!
Loved it! My Hallmark/Gilmore-loving heart is so happy right now. I loved all of the references to the films and actors, and wasn't surprised by how many I knew.
The audiobook was perfect and made me want to call-in sick to cuddle up with cocoa, a blanket, and my favorite Hallmark movie!
I adore Adi and her Romcom-loving bestie, and I'm sure we'd be friends in real life. Follow along on her adventure in a small town, that ends up being the opposite of what she expects.
Finn will steal your heart and make you glad this book isn't a sweet as the movies, lol. This is the perfect addition to your summer reading list, especially if you're looking for an escape.
I did not finish this audiobook. The narrator’s happy, peppy voice for some of these characters is over the top and drove me bonkers. People don’t talk like that! I couldn’t listen anymore and switched to the ebook. I made it a little further, but I really just didn't like the story. I love Hallmark movies. I love them so much that I have a sizable DVD collection of my favorite ones. I track the ones I’ve watched or want to watch in the Hallmark app, just like I track my books here. This book? It’s a cliche Hallmark movie ad, and I can’t stand it. The heroine travels to a small town to write all about how it’s just like the movies. She’s hoping to find people that fit into those Hallmark movie character molds. She’s disappointed when she discovers that Pleasant Hollow is nothing like a Hallmark movie. And you know what? Duh. A woman her age should know that Hallmark movies are not real life. The hot single handyman in town does not go caroling in his spare time. The B&B innkeeper is working a thankless job in hospitality. She’s not going to bubble over with happiness that you’ve come to her inn, hoping she’s a caricature. Hallmark movies are charming and happy and wonderful because they’re not real life. They’re an escape. If real life were like them, nobody would want to watch them. Lol. It bugged me so much that Adina kept being surprised and disappointed that Pleasant Hollow and its people are not baking pies, hosting fall festivals and tree lightings, and are serving store bought pastries for breakfast. “Does anyone bake in this town?”, she asks. She’s just so ridiculous. Lol. She’s also a crummy journalist, continually making rookie mistakes. I’d rather watch the movies this book is referencing than read this book. I’d rather watch the Hallmark actors on TV than read about what Adina thinks of them in this book. Unfortunately, As Seen On TV did not work for me personally in any way, but I will recommend it to people who enjoy small town romcoms.
Adina is an aspiring journalist who is over the NYC dating scene and wants her own small-town romance like she sees in the movies. When she hears about a real-life Hallmark scenario about a small town called Pleasant Hollow, where a big-city real estate company has gone in with plans to build, Adina sees this has her opportunity for a big break and a chance to get out of the city for a few weeks. But when she gets there, it isn’t what she expects. Finn, the man in charge of the project isn’t the greedy man she expected, Pleasant Hollow is nothing like the small towns she sees in the movies, and they are happy for the real estate to be coming in. She sticks around looking for a story, but also starts to fall for Finn in the process.
This was truly a Hallmark movie in book form and I loved every second of it. I loved how Adi so deeply believed in Hallmark style romances and was looking for her own. At some points it felt a bit naive but was also so relatable - who hasn’t had that moment of being over the dating scene and wanting someone to sweep you off your feet? I enjoyed all of the pop culture references and most importantly I loved all of the side characters in Pleasant Hollow. They were the comedic relief every good rom com needs. I thought the romance was sweet and I was rooting for Adi and Finn both as individuals and as a couple from the beginning.
I switched between audio and physical copy and both were fantastic. The audio was narrated by Emily Lawrence who did a great job!
Thank you to Forever Publishing, Hachette Audio, and NetGalley for the advanced copies.
As Seen On TV - very aptly named. If you haven’t watched a ton of made-for-TV movies, especially Hallmark ones, you will be completely lost with all of the references and actor’s names the author includes in the book. (I thought it quite comical that the end still included the “all references to names of people are fictional and made up for the book…” when every single Hallmark actor named was, in fact, NOT made up or fictional and directly references a real person, for the purpose of the plot, ie. Andrew Walker, my favorite, and Trevor Donovan, when trying to compare the looks of the men or who could play them)
Movie title after movie title, actor name after actor name are thrown in. I have personally watched hundreds of Hallmark movies and I did catch and understand all of the references, and knew every movie and everyone the author was naming; however I know for certain, from other reviews, and from a friend who attempted but didn’t finish the book, that many other people did not, and actually did not enjoy that aspect. I believe using significantly less references to specific titles, and more about the general tropes, would have gone over far, far better for those folks. I always use those actors to try and picture book characters in my mind, but all of the name dropping, even though the plot was comparing this “real life” situation to a Hallmark movie, was just a lot.
The plot, otherwise, was decent - it could have had quite a bit removed from it and flowed a lot faster and smoother, and been perhaps more enjoyable. The way it came out ended up being about a 3.5 star overall, when it had so much promise with the premise! With loving Hallmark movies as much as I do, I really and truly had such high hopes, but went in hesitantly with the feedback I had initially. It was better than they all lead me to believe, but I had higher hopes from my initial blurb read. Adina and Finn did still manage to have the ups and downs one would expect from a romance such as this, and the hard-fought HEA.
If you love Hallmark movies as much as I do, you might enjoy this book - but know going in that there are a ton of movie title and actor name references, so if you aren’t familiar, you will just have to breeze past, or be pulling up IMDb to check out what the actor looks like, or what plot that movie had!
I enjoyed Emily Lawrence as a narrator - she did a very good job! I believe this was the first book I have listened to by her.
I received an advance listen copy of this book from NetGalley, Hachette Audio and Forever, and this is my honest feedback.
Thank you to Hachette Audi, Forever and NetGalley for the ALC in return for my honest review.
I was looking for an easy listen for my commute, but this wasn’t it.
The description got me because of the references to Hallmark movies and Gilmore Girls, but this was neither one of those. There were references to them, but that was it. The FMC was too naive, and more YA than what I think she should be. And the MMC was okay. I think, I had to do with the narrator. She overdramatized and her Finn voice wasn’t good. She made everyone sound s annoying. But, as always, don’t take my word for it. There are positive reviews out there. .
Once again, the audio quality from the netgalley app is trash, but that isn't the authors' fault! But it did make this book hard to get through. I couldn't finish it bc the audio had a grainy sound and made it difficult to listen to. I'll give this book another shot once it comes out. I'll give it 4 stars because what I did read was good.
A Jewish journalist/spin instructor heroine in a Stars Hollow esque setting?! Was this book written specifically for me? In Meredith Schorr's traditionally published debut, Adina Geller is nothing but relatable to this NYC single girl., complete with a Rosh Hashanah dinner scene! Don't even get me started on Finn - the Chris Hemsworth hero who steals Adina's heart.
I have read some of Meredith's prior novels as well and have loved all of them, I certainly look forward to more from her in the future.
Thank you to Forever for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
This story had such promise but did not deliver on the description. Adina is not likeable; she's annoying, immature, and bratty. I could not get through this because her need to change everything to her liking was saddening. What is it with New Yorkers leaving NYC and expecting to find the exact same thing everywhere else? If you love it so much, why leave? I get it. NYC is pretty fantastic but there is a whole big world out there with different experiences and maybe instead of expecting to find the same thing, try something new! I couldn't get through this book and can't recommend it.
This was an entertaining spin on your traditional Hallmark small town romances and I loved how Schorr wasn’t scared to add some steam to what are typically pretty tame stories!
It was light, charming and fun and I liked witty banter and pop culture references and all the plays on Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls and this one being set in Pleasant Hollow.
It also felt pretty realistic so that was a very nice bonus as some romcoms tend to feel quite impractical! While I was hoping for a little more out of this one, it was still a cute and enjoyable read!
Adina finds herself in Pleasant Hollow after pitching a story that could potentially make her journalism career. Finding more that she bargained for in this little town we are taken on a journey of hope, tears and love.
This story brings us quality writing at a good pace with loads of fun topics. A plot to keep you rooting for love and characters filled with emotional baggage but you still learn to love them. A great romcom with loads of laughter and a satisfying ending.
This book brings so much to the table and once you start you're slightly addicted. Loved it!
Thank you Netgalley and Hachette Audio for this ARC.
It always snows on Christmas, Main Street is always decorated with twinkle lights, there’s always an ice skating rink and then BAM a city outsider comes in inherits the house next door he/she didn’t want, inherits the doctors office he/she doesn’t want to run or wants to gentrify a part of town. And then there is always the local sweetheart that melts the city slicker ice cold heart.
Ahhh the hallmark channel…
Journalist and city girl Adina, leaves Manhattan to go and live out her Hallmark movie fantasy and write all about it. She has romanticized the idea of small town living, until she realizes it’s really not like the movies and Pleasant Hollow isn’t exactly “pleasant” and doesn’t even have pie.
This is a light, fun and sweet rom-com. As an avid Hallmark movie watcher, I made all the connections! I freakin loved it, I thought it was so hilarious and the premise of this book is genius! I love how Schorr literally debunks all the classic hallmark tropes. And last but not least I am always happy to see more Jewish characters in mainstream books!!
Cute, if not a bit sickly sweet and formulaic. The perfect book for when you want to turn your brain off
I am a fan of Hallmark movies so this had peaked my interest. As I was reading this it turned into a giant no. I wanted to DNF but stuck through it thinking it might get better (It Didn’t). The romance felt forced. Like they would have been better off as friends. The FMC (Aldina) was immature and annoying. And with the narration, I felt even more annoyed with her. Finn was ok and his character development has grown throughout the book unlike Aldina. Sadly, I didn't enjoy this one.
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for this audiobook for an honest review.
This story really surprised me and in the best way!! I absolutely adored it! It did give me some Gilmore Girls vibes and Adina was a great main character that I found utterly relatable. Finn was hot and the steamy scenes were a lot of fun haha! I didn't expect all that steaminess but it was fire.
I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed all of this story. I honestly have nothing to complain about!! I could see myself in Adina in many occassions and I loved seeing her grow and find her path with her career, her relationship with Finn, with her friend Kate, her mom. I also really welcomed the jewish rep and was so happy to see Rosh Hashana being refered to!
A super fun read that I'd recommend to anyone!!
Thank you to Netgalley, Meredith Schorr, and Hatchette Audio for an Advance listening copy in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed this cute book that follows an aspiring writer who travels to a small town in hopes of finding a hallmark type story there. Pleasant Hollow turned out to be not so great for Adina and we follow her as she meets many supporting characters who shes hoping to connect with in hopes of finding a story. This one has love, friendship, family, and hallmark type moments- it was very cute! This one will be available on June 7th, and would be a great beach read for all you romance lovers out there.
