Wow this is a really dark and twisted tale about a woman who has met and fallen in love with the perfect man and when he asks her to marry him she doesn’t have to think twice about it but after she meets her in laws she starts to think that maybe they aren’t as happy about the news and they pretend to be and ask she is struggling to breath during her wedding reception has she been right all along about her mother in law. This is a great read which I couldn’t put down and it kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page.
This was a quick book to read! It was one of those books that gives you deja vu. I swear I read a book with a near identical premise a month ago. I think this book could have been better if there were more characters. As fiancé Sam repeatedly points out, the only people in the house are him, his parents and occasionally a friend and the cleaning lady. We really don’t get a good feel for anyone in the book except, oddly, the cleaning lady.
I don’t know if the intent was to make it iffy if these events were actually happening to our main character but I felt like it was pretty clear they were which left so few suspects.
I don’t think the fiancé was catch either! He never believed her, took her side or told her anything about himself. Why did she like him?
I picked this book for the cover and description, having never read this author before. It was a fun, easy read, with a great twist! Recommended! Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
I thought this was going to be the typical issue of the over protected and smothering in law not accepting her son's choice of a wife.
It lived up to the title but with some unexpected twists that were truly surprising. The son had Mama issues as well as anger issues that were not dealt with. The bride to be came across as naive and a people pleaser which caused her to turn a blind eye to many things that occurred. I actually finished this book in about 3 hours, because I was intrigued if the marriage would happen and if his mother was gonna ease up on her neediness.
Well, without giving up the ending, there was a reason his Mother did not want him to leave home and I definitely didn't see that coming.
This was a quick, read that kept my interest, especially on a rainy day when I was stuck inside.
I’m always down to read a psychological thriller, and this one didn’t disappoint! Dana and Sam fell madly in love with each other from the moment they met. A few months into dating they decide to get married and buy a house together. However, when the sale on their house falls through Dana has to move in with Sam who currently lives with his parents. Leading up to the wedding Dana gets involved in too many accidents and starts to wonder if Sam’s mom is trying to get rid of her.
Some may guess the ending, but I had no idea what would happen! As gripping as this book was, there were a few things that I disliked about it. We don’t really get to understand the depth of Sam and Dana’s relationship. There were so many times that I cringed because Dana was letting herself be walked on by Sam and his family. Since we don’t really have much depth with Sam and Dana’s relationship it’s hard to imagine someone actually putting up with the all the drama Sam’s family brought. Towards the end of the book I wasn’t even rooting for Dana anymore because it just seemed ridiculous for her to even stay with Sam after everything that happened.
That being said, it was a quick read and the last half of the book I couldn’t put it down!

WOW!!! WHAT A THRILLER. What did I just finished? A MODERN version of THE OTHER WOMAN by SANDIE JONES?
Dana didn't expect to meet her knight in shining armour in her wildest dreams but her fate had other plans for her. During an interview for a new job and with a chance encounter she met Sam, the true love of her life and soon the romance begins between them like a film story. Everything was going good until Tamara, Sam's childhood friend and Evelyn, his mom entered. Tamara visits now and again but Dana wanted to ask her to go away. She couldn't forget that once they were lovers.
On the other hand, Evelyn has a secret of hers that could destroy everything. Dana heard something terrible between Evelyn and her husband. Soon strange things start to happen. Expensive jwellery is stolen and then found in Dana's possessions. She merely escaped of being electrocuted.
Soon, she knew one thing that Evelyn wanted her to go away from Sam's life.
Evelyn and Dana were very strong characters that forced me to read it.
Wasi it like THE OTHER WOMAN? Yes and no. It has scenes that make you think of that book but the last twist.. well... I'm not going to reveal it here so go and grab your copy.. i guarantee you won't regret.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advance copy.
A real cracker of a novel, twisty and full of turns that mean you never quite know what to suspect! Loved it!
Oh, the tension! I was practically clenching my jaws and holding my breath from start to finish. This slow burn psychological thriller is enticing and captured me, utterly and completely, from the first page to the last. I hungrily read the novel in one sitting, ignoring everyone and everything else.
Everyone said to assume nothing. They are right. You will think you know what’s going on, but things are not always as they seem. The mother in law is a great book. Thanks for allowing me the pleasure of reviewing this book.
Wow, what a guessing game this book was. I read it in a day, because I had to know the answers to the twists and turns. It kept me guessing right until the end. I will be looking for more from Ms. King. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this. It did not disappoint.
Cracking read. Loved this book, it’s easy to read, addictive. A real page turner. It kept me guessing.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC of The Mother-in-law by Karen King.
Dana never expected to meet the love of her life, Sam, on the way from interviewing for a new job. She never expected to be swept into a whirlwind romance and engagement. And she definitely never expected to end up having to have to move in with her future mother-in-law, who may possibly be on a mission to end the engagement at any and all costs.
This was definitely a page turner that I devoured in record time. I can't count the number of times I wanted to tell at Dana for being so naive and just plain ignorant. But I still loved this one. It seemed so blatantly obvious to me that I was thrown off course in the end. This is definitely for readers looking for a quick, fun, but thrilling read.
No I am a mother in law and also have a mother in law. If this woman was my mother in law I would be on the next bus out of town. I hope my daughter in law doesn’t think of me in this way. Family is great but staying with them is like dead fish - after three days it stinks. Great book though!

Dana and Sam meet and very quickly fall in love. He is 35 and still lives at home, and Dana moves in just before the wedding.
She feels very out of place when Tamara, Sam's childhood friend keeps turning up to the house, and Dana cannot rid herself of the notion that Tamara and Sam were in love at some stage.
Evelyn, Sam's mother does not give Dana and Sam any privacy at all, and makes it clear behind Sam's back that she does not think that the relationship will work, or that Dana is good enough for her son.
Soon, things start happening, expensive jewellery belonging to Evelyn disappears and is found in Dana's jacket pocket, Dana has a near miss with being electrocuted... she definitely feels that Evelyn is trying to get rid of her.
And then, there is the quiet cleaner that behaves suspiciously.
All in all, a very good story and every chapter keeps you reading "just one more". I did feel that Dana was a pushover, but can understand this, because I lived with my in-laws and didn't want to rock the boat.
There is a twist at the end that I suspected, but didn't really expect if you know what I mean. I had just had a thought while trying to sort through the incidents "what if"...... But you really do need to read this book, I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Mother-in-law is a chilling book and I couldn’t wait to finish reading it. The book reads like a traditional thriller but there’s an sinister element to it. I absolutely cannot wait to find out what happened!
Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC. I don't know how many times I yelled "red flag" to Dana. She is a better woman than I am because I would have left Sam and not put up with everything that Dana did. It was so obvious that Sam's mother didn't want him to marry her, but she still stuck it out. I'm all for love, but when a accidents start to happen, it should have pushed her out the door. I couldn't put this book down and the ending, wow!
The Mother In Law by Karen King was a 'tear through the pages, don't interrupt me' kind of read, and I simply devoured it. Ms King is an author who has now been added to my must read list, and I cannot wait to see what delightful twistedness she comes out with next.
Dana has met the love of her life in Sam and cannot wait to become his wife. Having no family of her own, Dana is anxious to become a part of Sam's closely knit family, his mother Evelyn and father Harold. But as the couple move into the family home in the weeks before the wedding, a series of events begin to put Dana in danger, and her paranoia mounts as she becomes more convinced that these unfortunate incidents are not accidents at all. Someone wants to prevent her marriage to Sam, and will not be satisfied until Dana is dead.
It has been far too long since I have enjoyed a read so much, and I would happily recommend this one.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
As my own relationship with my mother-in-law is not the best it could be, the summary for “The Mother-in-Law” by Karen King drew me in. Also, the cake on the cover - so attractive. Anyway, this is an instalove meeting (groan) but fortunately while that plays a part in this book, it’s not the main focus. Sam is the beloved son of his parents and Dana is his soon-to-be bride. Through some twists and turns, Dana and Sam end up living together - in Sam’s parents’ house … where strange things begin happening, putting Dana’s life in danger. Is Dana’s future MIL behind these events? Is it Tamara, the family friend? Is it Dana just being extremely unlucky? You’ll need to read the book to find out. I cannot say that there was much depth to anyone except Dana - and she seemed a bit of a “damsel in distress” for most of the book. I rather wished that Dana’s friend would have been a bit more involved - if nothing else, she was a good voice of reason. I found this book a quick read that held my interest, although I did find myself mentally telling Dana “get out of there, spend the money to be safe! If you trust Sam, take him along.” Overall, an enjoyable quick read with a twist I didn’t see coming for a very long time. A 3.5 rating overall.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. This book was ok. Very similar to other books/movies where mothers are trying to stop their sons from getting married. Very serious boundary issues. There is a huge shock at the end though! I ended up skimming through some in the middle to get to the end.
You are a girl struggling to make ends meet. He is a rich boy. You fall for him, but you cannot believe he feels the same way too. He assures you his parents will love you. You are not so sure about that. You can imagine they had a different type of girl in mind for their son. But it seems you were wrong and he was right, right?
Mother-in-law, often known as monster-in-law too. 😊 I cannot say I did connect with mine. I am a rather shy girl and I always felt a bit overwhelmed by them (yes, them, because I had 2 😉 ). I am pro honesty, but there are ways to express things and I found them often a bit blunt, not really taking in consideration the other person’s feelings. But I did not have to move in with them (phieeuw 😊 ) and they did not treat me the way Dana was treated. Thank God for that.
Parents want to protect their children, even if those children have become adults already, but you have to let them go at one point and let them live their lives. Sometimes though there are often, more sinister reasons why people act the way they do
The author did a very good job in messing with my head. I really did not know who to trust anymore or maybe that’s because nobody could be trusted?
Is Dana going through an episode of paranoia or is it all very, very real?
A very enjoyable read. 5 stars
Thank you
I really really enjoyed this book. It hooked me from the very beginning and kept me hooked the entire time.
