"Walking on Sunshine" kept playing after the phone hit the wall and landed somewhere in the dark, ... I was in hell."

Lynn Painter's writing is unmatched and I will dying on this hill. From Mr. Wrong Number to Better than the Movies, her email novels and this book, SHE IS AMAZING.

When I first saw the announcement for this book I squealed because groundhog day tropes are one of my favourite. Something about the mystery of being suck on the same day and trying to figure out how, why, and what MC needs to change to make the days continue. I am forever grateful for the eARC from Simon and Schuster and NetGalley.

This book includes so many references that all the bookish girlies love - Taylor Swift, Gilmore Girls, bookish FMCs, coffee obsessions, and references to other books and authors. Each chapter is titled Confession #1-21 and it's a confession that Emilie has written about her life "In case she dies young and doesn't want everyone to think she was a goody-two shoes the whole time." I really love interesting chapter headings instead of just "chapter 1,2,3... etc" and although Mr. Wrong Number was just little text bubbles with numbers (they fit the books theme so I give it a pass), Better than the Movies' chapters were headered with Liz's favourite rom-com quotes.

Again if you loved any of the "bookish references" I mentioned above, groundhog day trope, were team Jess in Gilmore Girls, love a good girl's big "fck it" moment where she finally allows herself to be herself (+ a little extra crazy.), and want a great YA romance with a good rounded plot besides just the romance this book! right! here!

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers Simon and Schuster Canada for the digital eARC in exchange for my honest opinion and reviews. Released November 15th 2022!

Okay I have to be honest, I found this book a little hard to get into at first. I was not sure I was going to enjoy the repetition of Emilie reliving Valentine’s Day over and over for a whole book. However, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I was hooked after Emilie decided to shake the day up. I’m in love with her chemistry with Nick, and loved learning new things about him every time Emilie’s Valentine’s Day repeated. I really felt like the book portrayed that everything truly does happen for a reason and things can in fact find a way to work themselves out, even if everything seems like a total nightmare of a day.
I also genuinely love Lynn Painter’s writing style and story telling abilities.

The time-loop trend is here to stay! And this is a great take on it. A fantastic rom-com for girls who place too much of their value on their "performance" as opposed to their happiness. Highly recommend!

This one was a super quick read. very entertaining. It was such an adorable and humorous contemporary read. This book can definitely cure someone from a reading slump. This made me laugh and swoon. The idea of the storyline was very unique and entertaining. It was filled with coincidences and twists and turns, which isn’t the most realistic thing ever. But I just couldn’t help but get hooked.

Emilie (the goodie goodie, the studious and the planner) and Nick (the quiet, shy and mysterious boy) were both very solid characters. I just love how unique they are. I enjoyed seeing their struggles and seeing how they deal with the hardships of life. It just made them that much more real. Emilie was the one I truly connected with. I love how passionate and “quirky” she is. She is just such a fun character. I loved seeing her growth, but mostly I loved seeing her become more confident.

The relationship between Emilie and Nick was one of the best parts of this novel.
Their dynamic was so well written. The romance was really well integrated. It wasn't rushed. It flowed well. I thought their banter and teasing were just so cute. Their history was amusing. I loved how they just constantly butted heads. They were both really different characters with different personalities and I thought it was great seeing them face the challenges together in their own way!
I loved the moment both characters had the “talk”(that moment when they have a deep conversation that allows them to understand one another on a deeper level).

Can we talk about the first song on this book's playlist being the Shawn Mendes remix of lover??? Why would you ever make this creative decision??? (this is lighthearted I just don't like this remix compared to the original)

Ok so my feelings about this book are very all over the place.

Like Painter's first novel it is an insanely quick read, i finished it in like two hours, but again like her first novel, i'm not sure if i really enjoyed it?

Ok so the first thing that didn't work for me is lowkey my fault but I hated the repeating day concept, it made the first chapters incredibly repetitive and I just wanted it to end. But then once it did I didn't like it much better??

Nothing wraps up till the very last chapter which just annoyed me.

I did however love Painter's writing once again, she writes quick and witty, and includes a bunch of Taylor Swift references which i love. So I guess for me its the plots that have been lacking?

For the romance, I definitely liked Liz+Wes better but Nick and Emilie weren't that bad, they were cute but once again the plot set up just aggravated me so their storyline wasn't the greatest for me.

LYNN. PAINTER. After reading Painter's Better than the Movies, I knew I had to get my hands on The Do-Over as soon as possible and I was not disappointed. After reading my first Groundhog Day-esque novel earlier this year and not knowing what to make of it, I was willing to give The Do-Over the fairest of shots. This YA novel follows Emilie as she has to relieve a disastrous Valentine's Day over and over again and Nick, our resident brooding bad boy who has a soft spot for books (and our heroine). The banter was giggly-worthy, the attitude just teenagery enough and of course, so much pining and romance. SO worth the read.

Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

“The last thing I want is the girl I’m obsessed with to tell me she’s proud of me for going to therapy. I’ve got a mother for that, thank you.”

Nick Stark you will always be famous 🫶🏾<3

4.5 stars: As a Lynn Painter enthusiast and BTTM-obsessed individual, this book was definitely one of my most anticipated reads of 2022… and it did NOT disappoint! The book follows Emilie “I’m just a girl who is incandescently happy at the moment” Hornby who ends up in a time loop where she keeps reliving the same horrific Valentine’s Day over and over again. This girl was going THROUGH it, I don’t want to give too much away but her life was really going up in flames.

And of course, there’s the fun stuff like Emilie and Nick’s banter, their fun city-wide escapade, and the fact that Emilie got Taylor Swift lyrics tattooed on her?? If there’s anything I know about a Lynn Painter book, there’s a 99.9% chance of me giggling and becoming way too invested in the relationship… and this book definitely wasn’t an exception.

If you're looking for a fun and heartwarming YA rom-com to read then look no further <3

“Yes, Emilie Hornby, I’m here to tell you that I’m a little obsessed with you. With this.” He raised his hands and cupped my face. “With us.”

“I fell in love with you on Valentine’s Day, Emilie, but I need more than just seven minutes.”

Just have to start with - why is a book about Valentine's Day coming out in November?? LOL

Otherwise, Lynn Painter is a fantastic writer and I have yet to be disappointed by Lynn's YA or NA books. The Swiftie and Gilmore Girls (Nick is basically Jess Mariano) references really had my heart. You can't always put in pop culture references and have them work but these work. Really sweet YA rom-com from start to finish.

Thank you to Simon and Schuster Canada on NetGalley for this eARC. An honest review was provided!

The Do-Over by @lynnpainterkirkle

Thank you @netgalley and @simonandschuster for the ARC

#lynnpainter is quickly becoming one of my favourite rom-com authors. The many #taylorswift references and the not so subtle nod to #gilmoregirls had me instantly hooked. (#teamjess forever) 😉

I went into this blind because I loved #betterthanthemovies so much and instantly I was reminded of #rachellynnsolomon ‘s new book (loved that one too). The thing with time loop plots is that obviously the plot isn’t driving it forward so you have to rely solely on the characters which can be tricky and not always pay off. It wasn’t an issue here at all! I fell in love with these characters instantly and had so much fun diving into all the aspects revealed with each interaction. This is how the trope should be done!

This is a must read for sure!

“a teen girl has the worst Valentine’s Day ever—only to relive it over and over again.”

If this blurb doesn’t make you want to read it…just know I read this novel in ONE SITTING (8 hours to be exact). I just could not put this book down. I just wanted to know what would happen next.

THANK YOU to the publishing company, Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for providing me with an e-arc copy of The Do-Over by Lynn Painter!

(I am internally kicking myself as to why I haven’t read the rest of Lynn Painter’s novel! This was my first Lynn Painter book and I’m happy to say this won’t be my last.)

I won’t deny I requested this book for the sole purpose of the cover…because the cover art is just BEAUTIFUL. But wow did the storyline for this surprise me.
This book is a definite recommend. Thank you to the author for this cute and funny read. And just thank you to the author for shining light on the importance of communication in any relationship

For people who like this kind of book, this is the kind of book they like.

Disclaimer: The Do-Over is a high-school romance novel. My personal ideal storybook romance is closer to Mako Mori and Raleigh Becket than anything that ever appeared in a John Hughes film. So The Do-Over was always going to be a hard sell for me.

That said, what does Lynn Painter have to offer us in place of Mako and Raleigh fighting each other with sticks? Well, we have moments like this,

"I’d always thought winking was cheesy until that day. Uri’s winks made me warm and melty."

If that makes you squeal with glee, then The Do-Over is the book for you. (By the way, there is no character in the book named Uri. I'm using that name -- Unnamed Romantic Interest for Emilie's potential romantic partners in this review to avoid spoiling.) The book is full of moments in which Emilie Hornby, our heroine and first-person narrator, has *Feelings* as a result of her interactions with the Uris. If hot-guy-wink-induced deliquescence is what floats your boat, then you will like this book. (I personally am more partial to the Jane Austen model, in which a heroine experiences hot-guy-induced physical symptoms at most two or three times in a novel. The Do-Over feels to me more like Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho, in which Emily -- same name, even -- responds to every single thing thing that happens by swooning.)

So, this is a book that does what it is supposed to do -- narrates hot-guy-induced *Feelings*. Three stars for that.

Thanks to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Canada for an advance reviewer's copy in exchange for a candid review.

I just finished this book and I’m sitting here with tears in my eyes. This is a book that I will cherish.

Lynn Painter really knocked one out of the park with this one. If you loved her previous YA release, Better Than the Movies, you’ll absolutely devour and adore The Do-Over.

Painter knows how to hold your heart in the pages of books. From start to finish, everything about this story was perfect.

I’ll admit to giggling and falling even more in love with this book whenever I would spot a Taylor Swift reference. Honestly, there is nothing better in life than finding people who have the same level of love you have for something. The happiness that happens when you get to share that love is a beautiful feeling.

Thank you Lynn for writing such a gorgeous story.

You guys!! To say I loved this book is an understatement. To say I read it in a day and a half because I couldn't put it down is the truth. Why have I not read more of Lynn Painter's books before now?

This YA romance is so sweet and I loved every word of it. It follows Emilie as she wakes up on Valentine's morning, which quickly turns to a wreck of a day, only for her to re-live over and over. Each day a slightly different experience until she decides to make the most of it taking Nick (who is basically Jess Mariano incarnate so we love him) along with her, knowing tomorrow she will wake up and restart the day without any of the consequences. Lynn Painter creates such an amazing dynamic between these two seemingly opposite characters. Emilie, the planner, academic achiever, and good girl and Nick, the quiet, broody, Metallica loving bad-boy (who also knows a lot about books - like I said Jess Mariano). This book takes the already amazing 'groundhog day' plot and turns it into the best Valentine's Day love story. From balcony sneaking, to sharing family trauma, to having a marvelous time ruining everything, Emilie and Nick's story fills your heart with so much warmth. The only question left, is what happens next?

For anyone who wants a sweet romance you HAVE to pick this book up when it come out! It's an amazing read (the banter! the kisses! the idgaf attitude! we love it all!) and I am absolutely getting my hands on this when it's released (do I really have to wait??).

Huge thank-you to Simon & Schuster Canada & Netgally for providing me an Advanced Reader Copy of The Do-Over!
