The first one was WAY better. This book was far too long. Could have been at least 75-100 pages shorter. I don't really care what the townspeople think about all of this, just show us what's happening with the tournament. But that's just my opinion.
Briony was still my least favorite and very annoying. Isobel got on my nerves at first, but I guess she was ok-ish towards the end, but eh. Alistair was my favorite and although he may not of had the exact perfect ending, I'm just glad he's alive. I'm neutral about the other characters honestly, I don't really care about them, that's what this book did to me.
I really debated on giving this book a 2 or a 3 star rating but decided on a 3 since they kept the majority of the people alive, and they didn't write a 3rd book.
I'm just.... not sure how much I enjoyed this as a whole? I only really cared about one relationship in this installment, and thankfully it was the one that mattered. Otherwise, very slow paced, very underwhelming, but not mad I made it to the end.
Oddly enough, it was hard to settle back into the world of these characters. While I found the original interesting, my attention wasn't as easily kept with this one. I also struggled to recall which characters were which from the first book.
I had the opportunity to read a digital advance reader copy (ARC) of "All of Our Demise" by Amanda Foody and C. L. Herman, thanks to NetGalley and Tor. Although I finished reading this book before its release date in 2022, I am only now getting around to reviewing it. I apologize for the delay in writing this review.
“All of Our Demise” is the conclusion to the "All of Us Villains" duology. Having read the first book, I eagerly awaited the publication of the second one. The characters in the story are quite intense, as they are portrayed as vicious psychopaths, or villains. I found that the authors did an excellent job with character development. My favorite character was Alistair, though I also enjoyed reading about Gavin, Briony, Hendry Lowe, and the other villains. The novel unfolds from multiple points of view and includes enemies who become lovers, as well as plenty of twists, turns, and magical competitions. The authors surprised me with the direction they chose for the ending of the novel. "All of Our Demise" was a fast-paced, wild ride filled with plenty of surprises, which made it an enjoyable read.
The concept of this series was interesting. I enjoyed the mystery and trying to find out what the characters were going to do.
**Many thanks to TOR Teen, and Edelweiss for an Advanced Reader's Copy (ARC) of this book**
I read the first book in this duology, All of Us Villains, and I was absolutely hooked. These seven people are TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE people (hence the word "Villains" to describe them), in their own separate ways. In this continuation, the dastardly deeds continue, but... Not quite in the same way.
BLOOD MOON RISING
1. Alistair interacting with... Pretty much everybody, especially Gavin and one other. Alistair is the character I kept coming back to every time. He is the absolute WORST character of them all, but his reasoning as to why he does what he does, and how his past impacts his personality now, I got to a point where I just wanted to hug the little psychopath. His interactions with others was the highlight of the book for me.
2. The results of trying to break the curse. Seven landmarks, seven items, seven different obstacles, each one unique. I loved seeing all of that unfold.
3. The romances. There are 3 in this book, and they have a certain order in my brain as to which one I preferred over the others. For me, there was a "good, bad, ugly" ranking. The "good" romance was adorable, sweet, and a long time coming for both the characters involved.
BLOOD VEIL FALLS
1. Isobel. For me, she was the biggest disappointment. I loved her character in the first book, but as time went on in the second, it felt like she grew colder and colder until she became unrecognizable. By the end, I felt like I didn't know her at all.
2. Everything going on outside of the tournament. I know, I know, that was inevitable. But, I could care less about the politics on the outside of the Blood Veil. I'm invested in my little band of misfits, and dang it, I just care about them! Plus, the political intrigue outside was a little hard to follow.
3. Coupled with the outside issues, I found the book moved a bit too slow in the middle. Explaining things dragged the story down to a crawl, and I found myself skimming pages to get to the end.
CONCLUSION
Overall, I liked the book, but I felt it was not as strong as All of Us Villains. It slowed down a bit too much for my liking, and the world was expanded too much. However, it was a good end to a good duology. If Amanda Foody and CL Herman want to revisit this world and its inhabitants, I would read it.
I really loved the first book but unfortunately the second one wasn’t connecting with me and I had to dnf it. I’m hoping to give it a try one day in the future!
Higher stakes, fierce battles and so many twists! All of Our Demise didn't disappoint as the conclusion to this duology! I couldnt believe how many alliances were tested, and all the trials the characters went through. This series is a must read! Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to access this thrilling conclusion.
I liked this book but I didn’t love it like I loved the first book. I think the competition setting of the first book gave it that edge and the plot of this one was weaker by comparison.
I loved the characters and loved the world building but this was missing something for me.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me free access to the digital advanced copy of this book.
The absolute perfect sequel! I kind of dropped off of the face of NetGalley but I'm going to catch up and review all of the books that I did actually read but just never reviewed. Thank you for gracing this copy to someone who was too incompetent to review it on time. Or write a good review. I reckon I should probably give up on NetGalley but it kills me to see my score this low.
I loved this series. Amanda Foody is of my favorite authors, and seeing her work with someone to create something like this fills me with joy! Writing with other people is hard so for them to do a whole duology?! Wild. I wouldn't make it haha. I loved the characters and how they executed the plot. Such a good book!
Unfortunately I started this and realized that I was missing something- this is the second book in a duology. That happening I decided to wait til I could read book one (which was wonderful). This was a good conclusion but ultimately I was a bit underwhelmed. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep you entertained but it lacked something in the plot. I was thoroughly engaged with the characters in book 1 but kinda didn’t care in book 2 which was surprising for me. Will say the writing is wonderful.
All Of Our Demise starts out with the group split and the barrier falling; an unfortunate circumstance since now not only do the residents of Ilvernath know what’s happening within the tournament but also, now so does the rest of the world. With the competitors split and Reid MacTavish dropping that MASSIVE twist about him being the author of the book while also effectively taking a hostage, Demise had some big shoes to fill. Which it did, kind of.
First off, I want to say that while I don’t wish I had my time back, I felt like this would go very differently. There’s till murder, intrigue, absolute psychopaths and an ending that made me happy to have received this early, there was something missing that I cant quite put my finger on. The overarching story was well written but (there’s always a but) once again, Demise suffered from the pacing issues of its predecessor – the story should have come tearing out of the gate but instead kind of stalled after the first couple of chapters. I don’t know if this is a *thing* with the authors when they write separately but lets hope their next joint venture is not the same.
Pacing issues aside, each of the characters seem to have some significant growth within this one. Once sides have been taken, everyone starts working through their issues with each other and realising teaming up to destroy the tournament is not actually a bad idea. The ‘villain’ of the piece is less a single person in this one and more the tournament itself – I love places taking on a character of their own and honestly the tournament actively trying to kill everyone is a perfect example of traits of humanity being imprinted onto inanimate objects.
While I’m trying to keep this one short because its now almost a month later and details are now fuzzy, I do want to say that All of Our Demise is a worthy successor to Villains but maybe not as earth shattering as it could have possibly been. This one is less vengeance and murder, more unrequited love and teamwork. Still good, just different. Just be prepared for it to make you mad in the final chapters.
An absolutely epic ending to this duology. I loved the first one and the second did not disappoint. Amazing character development, magical competition, enemies to lovers, and multiple POVs !!!! Thank you so much to the publisher and to NetGalley for the opportunity to read in exchange for a review!
WHAT A STUNNING CONCLUSION!
I enjoyed every page of this journey. Sometimes duologies struggle because so much story is condensed, but this set just stuns and amazes.
I adored the villains and the ship I was most hoping for absolutely happened.
The magic was dark, the motives and plots darker, the actual villains darkest. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoyed HP and Hunger Games.
Let me start by saying thank you for the I received For an honest review .
This title was one of my most anticipated reads of the year , like I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one . When I say I screamed for joy , I screamed !!!
Alistair Lowe everyone . That is all , that’s my review … only kidding ! But he is the reason I wanted more from these books . Alistair has such a great character and the darkness shines throughout these books .
Supporting character Gavin , Isobel , Briony & Hendry Lowe make this story complete . I love being able to separate the characters with their chapters , you feel like you are seeing things from their perspective .
The magic was fantastic in the second book , with all these twist and turns . I was kept on the edge of my seat and taken to unexpected places , I really loved so much .
Usually second books don’t live up to the hype , but I can say this one did . This duology is rated as a top favorite read of mine & can see myself returning for me dark magic 🪄
Thank you 😊
Thanks to NetGalley & Tor Teen for the copy in exchange for an honest review.
The sequel that picks up right where "All Of Us Villains" left off--this intense magic murder trials comes to an end. But will everyone make it out alive?
I actually struggled a bit in the middle of the book, the pacing slowed down to a snail's pace--then it picked up again and got really good! I'm still a bit confused at how the tournament rules operate, though I still greatly enjoyed both books. Highly recommend for any looking for a fast-paced magical Hunger Games kind of book. I will say the romance got on my nerves, similar to HG, but if you pushed past it like I did I still enjoyed the series.
All of our demise is full of twists and turns. Some are ones I saw coming and others are ones that were a complete surprise. This book kept me up all night and is a fast paced book.
This book was as if the Hunger Games spilled out into the public — high intensity, stressful, and I was always at the edge of my seat. There's some great character development in this story, and the dark atmosphere will keep me returning to this series to recommend it.
“Destroy the tournament — before it destroyed them all.”
All of us Villains was one of my top reads for 2021, and All of our Demise followed it up as the perfect conclusion to the story.
The story follows immediately after the ending of book one, and we continue to switch POVs between 4 of the participants. Watching the way that all four have struggled with what has already happened, and seeing their growth was such an emotional experience. I enjoyed all six of the participants, and really connected with them all — even the ones I disliked in book one.
While I loved the ending, I do wish there had been a bit more detail. It felt like a blink and you miss the action, but when you are following a group of characters that have split up, that can tend to happen. But even with the ending feeling a bit rushed, I enjoyed every moment of it. 4.75, rounded up to 5.
I cannot wait to read more from this author duo.
