Absolutely loved the audiobook. I listened every chance I had. Definitely top tier in my opinion. This is the first book by this author I’ve had a chance to read and it definitely won’t be the last.
This is the story of a girl who was different and didnt know why. Suddenly one night everything comes flooding back and Ivy realizes she is in a fight for her life and those that she loves. The story rotates between present and the past. Melissa Albert weaves a seamless story about being different, friendship, anger, greed and betrayal.
I wasnt sure what to expect but OMG this audio book was amazing!!!!!! Both narrators brought the words on the page to life. I couldnt stop listening. These narrators and author are now on my automatic buy list
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* would reread this for sure! 4.5, really liked this. it took me a bit to get into it but now i wish it was a series!
This was not the book for me, I couldn't relate to any of the characters and the writing was not clicking well for me either. I've liked this author in the past but this did not do it.
Loved this one. Very whimsical and dark but does take a lot of world building, and time to get into. I think narration with fantasy can be really challenging though and I think this was very well done considering it’s trope and topic!

OUR CROOKED HEARTS by @melissaalbertauthor
The suburbs, right now . . .
Seventeen-year-old Ivy’s summer break kicks off with an accident, a punishment, and a mystery: a stranger whose appearance in the middle of the road, in the middle of the night, heralds a string of increasingly unsettling events. As the days pass, Ivy grapples with eerie offerings, corroded memories, and a secret she’s always known—that there's more to her mother than meets the eye.
The city, back then . . .
Dana has always been perceptive. And the summer she turns sixteen, with the help of her best friend and an ambitious older girl, her gifts bloom into a heady fling with the supernatural. As the trio’s aspirations darken, they find themselves speeding toward a violent breaking point.
Years after it began, Ivy and Dana's shared story will come down to a reckoning among a daughter, a mother, and the dark forces they never should’ve messed with.

This book presents a creepy atmosphere fraught with foreshadowing - you know something bad is coming but it takes a bit for the story to unravel.
The story begs to answer the age old question, "Is it right to keep your kids from making mistakes and sheild them from experiencing heartbreak if you feel like you are keeping them "safe"?" The problem of course is that secrets have a way of finding their way out...
It is a story rooted in supernatural power and revenge and I was intrigued by the impending collision. I liked the storytelling, the dual timeline, the dark magical atmosphere and the witchy vibes. I wanted more background on the 70s timeline and had no problem deciphering what was going to occur in the story, but I still enjoyed the journey getting there.

Our Crooked Hearts by Melissa Albert was narrated by Chloe Cannon and Emma Galvin. I chose to listen to this book on audio and I love Emma Galvin’s voice. She’s awesome in this! I highly recommend listening to this one.
The story opens with a mysterious girl and will untangle what’s happening by a now and then POV.
It’s well done and interesting. And I only one question. Will there be a book 2???
You could totally do it and maybe have more romance for me. Please.
Thanks Macmillan Audio via NetGalley.
I listened to the audiobook of this book, great narration.
This is a story about Dana, the mom and Ivy, the daughter, our two main points of view. It’s filled with witchy vibes, creepy at times, family drama and a big mystery to solve.
I think the best way to experience this read is to go in blind, don’t read the blurb, it spoils too much.
If you love witchy things you will enjoy this book. Very well written.
The Suburbs, Right Now- Ivy seems like a typical 17 year old. She has (well had) a boyfriend, sneaks out and goes to parties, and is trying to discover just who she is. A strange encounter with a naked girl in the middle of the road and the discovery of a dead rabbit, however, leads Ivy down a path towards a series of events and revelations, helping her to unearth the truth, but this truth may come with a hefty price.
The City, Back Then- Dana, along with her best friend Fee, works at the family business, where she meets an older girl named Marion. As the trio begin a friendship, Marion draws the girls into a new world full of magic and the supernatural, but Marion’s desire for power soon leads the girls to dabble in some darker magic, magic that they may be unequipped to handle.
Our Crooked Hearts is a gripping story full of magic, the supernatural, betrayals, friendships, loss, love and strength. Ivy and Dana’s stories are told along two timelines–right now (Ivy) and back then (Dana)--and Albert brings these timelines together perfectly, creating a suspenseful page-turner. I enjoyed experiencing the events of the novel from both Ivy and Dana’s perspectives; each character is well developed and has a unique voice within their unique experiences. Our Crooked Hearts is a wonderful tale that shows the costs that the longing for power brings, as well as the power of love.
The audiobook was an enjoyable listen. I really liked Ivy’s chapters; the tone, inflection and sarcasm was spot on and it really felt like I was listening to a coming-of-age teen experiencing and surrounded by some unique events.
This one was really cool! It gave all the fall witchy vibes I would 100% recommend adding it to your fall TBR!
Okay so the thing I liked the best was the alternating POV chapters between Ivy (the suburbs. right now.) and her mom, Dana (the city. back then.) This is a story about a Mother’s dark secrets and a confused daughter trying to unravel the mystery. The story lines weave together so seamlessly and collide in the present for a huge reckoning for both mother and daughter. The magic plays a key role throughout the story. Ivy never felt like a dumb teenager just inserting herself into situations she had no business messing with. She was genuinely concerned about what was happening and trying to find her mom which required uncovering some secrets. Dana’s storyline from the past was perfect along side the present, giving context for what happened back then and the secrets she was hiding.
But yeah… this book was great and I want to see it all over Booksta come October and spooky season 👻🪄🪞🔮🐇
On the night 17-year-old Ivy breaks up with her boyfriend, she sees something she can't unsee... And things only get more and more strange from there. From her mother's "migraines" and bizarre behavior to not remembering parts of her childhood, Ivy knows something is up. But is she ready to get sucked into a whole new world and unlock the secrets of her family's past?
4/5 spooky stars! The writing was superb, and I was hooked from the first chapter! If you love witchy revenge YA, this is for you. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️.💫/5 (3.5 Stars)
Narration: Really well done! Great job at doing the dual narration of past and present in the book
No Spoiler Review 👇🏻👇🏻
This was an enjoyable paranormal YA fiction read! It was dark and mysterious! I’m going to give a minimal description as it’s better to go in not knowing much.
This is a paranormal fiction ya book. It follows ivy, one night she sees someone rising from the water. It’s weird and even weirder stuff starts following her. Ivy soon finds out her mom is a witch. This story goes back and forth between present day Ivy solving a mystery of what’s happening and the past and how her mother got started practicing magic. It’s dark, spooky, full of mystery, witches, and the occult.
Overall it was a good read! Some of the middle was a little slow, and I wish more of the magic was more developed, hence the 3.5 stars, but it was enjoyable.
Thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
CW: Gore, animal violence
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this audiobook arc.
I listen to a lot of audiobooks so I adore one is engaging and well done. This one was really mediocre to me. I did not care for the narrators at all. I was way more interested in the mother Dana’s story than her daughter Ivy’s but the narrator was so monotone! She talked so low and in the same pitch. I didn’t care for Ivy’s narrator either so narrators can make it break your book. I thought the whole production fell flat.
The story follows split timelines and POVs which I don’t mind, but I wasn’t particularly interested overall. It was very slow paced and I didn’t find it to be that dark. There are some dead bunnies. I thought it had a lot of promise but was just a book that wasn’t for me. I’m sure there will be plenty who will love it.
I think this book was well written but just wasn’t for me. I don’t remember parts of the plot because I was bored but I think it had a good story line and if you like magic this is the book for you
I really enjoyed the audiobook of Our Crooked Hearts. I liked the MC and a lot of the banter. I liked most of the magical aspects. And I also liked the setting. I would recommend this read.

THE CITY, BACK THEN . . .
Dana has always been perceptive. As the trio’s aspirations darken, they find themselves speeding toward a violent breaking point.
Years after it began, Ivy and Dana’s shared story will come down to a reckoning among a daughter, a mother, and the dark forces they never should’ve messed with.
A witchy mystery with duel timelines between Ivy and her mother. It gives a lot of The Craft vibes and even mentions that in the text itself. It can be a little predictable and the pacing slows down a lot in the middle. Ivy's timeline feels a little lackluster compared to the events taking place in the past. Also, I have seen some people call this dark academia, but it takes place in the summer, so there is no academia.
Yay!!! I really liked this book. Send me all the crafty witch books. I especially loved the dual timelines and going back to the past. I think the past was my favorite. This definitely is on the edge of YA. I definitely would recommend to a friend.

Genre: YA Contemporary Fantasy
Read if you Like:
- Dark Witchy YA Novels
Thoughts:
- This was a great dark ‘witchy’ YA novel. Things moved quickly, and you’re drawn into the story and the characters - there are definite thriller/mystery vibes.
- We get two alternating timelines and alternating POV’s - pushing beyond the typical mother-daughter drama stories we’re used to.
- The atmosphere is set as moody and dark, a perfect background setting for this story.
- The Thrillerish/Mystery vibes are interwoven extremely well with the Fantasy aspects, and you're constantly itching to discover more, uncover more secrets, and figure out what happened.
i LOVE me a good witchy book! This kept me HOOKED from the first page. I loved this way more than I was expecting to especially since it is a YA book! If you are a fan of family drama to the extreme and a good twist, I would recommend!
I wasn't sure if this was going to be horror or a thriller based on the cover, but was pleasantly surprised. It also didn't seem like solely a young adult or an adult novel to me. Everything about this book was weird, from the girl, to her mother, to her brother, to the smushed rabbit. I enjoyed the split alternating POV timelines that helped give complexity to the story. Note: If you don't want your child reading about magic, this book isn't about you.
