I’m a huge fan of rom coms and this book definitely did not disappoint! It was a bit slow at first but the second half of the book was amazing! I love the found family in this book for Leah. When Leah realized she had people to count on, she decided to stay instead of fleeing town. I also loved all the rom com movies mentioned in the book! Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a light closed door (no spice) romance!
A cute, sweet read! I thought the romance was very well-developed, however the characters felt a little flat. The story itself felt a little lacking overall, but it still delivered the fluffy romance it promises.
I’m a fan of the friends-to-lovers trope and the found family trope, so I was really looking forward to reading The Rom-Come Agenda. While parts of this book were enjoyable to read, other parts fell flat for me. Let's talk about it.
We first meet Eli when he’s being dumped by his girlfriend because she thinks he’s moving too fast. After feeling really down about the breakup for several months, his friends decide to help him win his ex back and Leah gets recruited into Eli’s makeover.
What was disappointing to me about this book was just how long and how much Eli obsessed over his ex, even though Leah was obviously a better match for him. When Eli wasn’t obsessing over changing in order to get his ex back, he was a decent character who actually had a personality. I didn't like Eli going back and forth between thinking about getting his ex back and then saying all the sweet things to Leah. Also, the writing was just all right; certain jokes needed to be edited out and certain sub-plots felt undeveloped.
Leah was great. Sure she has some healing to do (who doesn't?), but she's a pretty secure character who has dreams and ambition. She also sees Eli for the great person he is and thinks this whole makeover plan is unnecessary.
I did like Leah and Eli together because they made sense and were good for each other; I wanted them to have their happily ever after even if I didn’t necessarily like how they got there.
Overall, this book was humorous and (mostly) enjoyable as a light read. The meddlesome, but well-meaning, side characters were a fun addition too. Personally, I liked the 80s and 90s romance movie references and the found family aspect in this book the most.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Was hard to put down. Loved the depth of the characters. I loved the ending. Something I wasn't excepting.
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin Press for this ARC.
Leah Keegan is ready to leave Willow Cove and never look back. Eli Masterson is determined to win back the love of his life, Victoria, who left for Rome after Eli proposed. Eli thinks that by turning into the ideal man, Victoria will come running back, and somehow Leah ends up helping him.
This includes watching classic rom-coms like Say Anything and Dirty Dancing, among others. As the two spend more and more time together, there’s no denying the spark they feel, but will they dismiss their feelings for each or fall head over heels?
Review: I didn’t hate it. But, I didn’t love it either. I loved the nostalgia of the movies Leah and Eli watched and their banter. I also really enjoyed the secondary characters and would love to read more about them. However, Eli spent far too much of the book being hung up on Victoria and I didn’t love Leah’s storyline of needing to leave Willow Cove. It was a quick, easy read, but not a must read.
This was a cute book with a super fun premise! Love the fact that what Eli needed was right in front of him all along!
The Rom-Com Agenda was a perfect mix of humor, grief, and romance. Our heroine, Leah, is struggling with the grief of the loss of her foster mother, but the grief is more complicated in that she was the sole caregiver of said foster mother when she got sick with cancer. This spoke to me personally, as I recently lost my partner to whom I was a caregiver. I connected with Leah on a different level than I expected to, and it made this novel all the more enjoyable, although difficult. Our hero, Eli, is dense but totally lovable. Naturally, I've dubbed him my newest book boyfriend. He's charming, humble, and funny. The family Leah finds in Eli's friends and family is just fantastic. Their dynamic was so fun and warm, and it made me want to join them and find my own family in them. I loved every single character and I wanted more of them! This is a very solid romance book, and I loved every second of it.
This is my first book by Jayne Denker and I typically love friends to lovers. I was intrigued by the male main character getting a make over. It was a slooow burn and with the mmc still pining over his ex made it a bit hard to stay into it. This book was a good dose of nostalgia for me with all the 80s/90s pop culture references. Overall, it was a decent read and I’d be interested in checking out another book by this author.
This book has a really cute premise but fell flat for me.
The pacing and writing style did not work for me. Also there were too many side plots and side characters. It was just a rollercoaster. It seemed to be a slow burn and then shifted to insta-love within a few sentences.
Some will love this book. It just wasn’t the book for me.
I hate doing this, but I had to DNF. I just could not get into it. I think Eli's character was just excruciating.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for my review.
DNF - This sounded really intriguing with the ode to those culture classic rom-com films but, in the end I was really disengaged because of Eli's behavior. I could not understand acting as he did after a single digit amount of months.....proposing marriage, never listening to said partner when they were clearly uncomfortable with the conversation he kept pushing forward; it was all too much. His chapters felt excruciating because this is meant to be a grown man. Unfortunately, he was severely poorly-adjusted & that just wasn't a cute act to read about. Poor Leah honestly.
This book was fine. The characters were fine. Same for the setting and the plot. I waited for something surprising to happen, but that something never came. Decent comfort read.
This was a really cute idea for a romance! Leah and Eli had a slow burn romance, but I was rooting for them the whole way. I think my only issue with it is that Eli was caught up on his ex for too much of the book and that took away from the romance with Leah in my opinion.
Thanks to St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the e-ARC!
I’m a total sucker for this book, and I really didn’t think I would be. Finding yourself in a small town? Check. Slow burn romance? Check. Many many references to classic rom com movies? Check. Makeover where the character realizes they’re actually awesome (and super lovable) the way they are? CHECK.
I really cared about the characters, and they felt really true to life. I also loved how they both grew and changed through the course of the book, albeit in ways I bet Eli and Leah never would have expected. Definitely recommend this one!
This book is adorable!! The cutest romance I've read in a while!
While slightly predictable, it was a comforting and heartwarming story a girl who finds love and friendship just as she plans to leave town! Usually I don't love friends to lovers, but reading about Leah trying to help the guy she likes get his girl back - even tho his friends say he needs to move on - was just too good to put down!
Leah helps Eli work to get back with his ex - all while falling for him herself! And not just for Eli, but his friends and family too!
This was a wonderful book I would recommend to anyone who loves comfort reads, winter vibes and a good old fashioned love story!
I enjoyed this book. The plot was well paced and the characters were well developed. I would recommend this book to others.
This was a good contemporary romance. I enjoyed the cast of characters alongside the main characters that added interest and levity to the story. Overall, it was a good enough read for those who like a contemporary romance.
After Leah accidentally witnesses Eli's proposal-gone-wrong, she finds herself roped into a plan to make him over so he can attempt to win back his ex. She just so happens to work at the clothing store, the tailor, the hair salon... and pretty much everywhere else in town. But as she helps him improve himself in every way, she finds herself thinking he was just fine the way he was before, and wondering if Victoria, his ex, might just be the wrong woman for him.
I absolutely adored this book. It was really sweet, and the tension between Leah and Eli was great. I loved the whole cast of characters-- Eli's friends are wonderful and funny, and I absolutely want to read more about all of them. They were such a perfect foil to the solitary Leah, and the way they brought her into the fold was lovely.
This was my first Jayne Denker book, and I will absolutely be reading more as soon as possible.
This title moved very slowly. There was very little redeeming qualities in the male protagonist. He was just so dim and unaware. Very hard to root for anything good for him.
Thank you #Netgalley for the advanced copy!
In this typical rom com read, we follow Leah, a young woman working man jobs to save up money to be on her own. She came back into town to take care of her foster mother who was dying. Leah runs into a group of girls giving a brother, Eli, an makeover to win his ex back. Leah recognizes Eli from the summer before when she spied on him proposing to his then girl friend. Leah quickly becomes intrigued with the make over and finds herself getting involved and joining the friend group. Leah had never had a group of friends like this before and wasn't used to be invited or involved in things. Leah does her best to maintain her independence but in typical rom com fashion she falls for Eli, who does not realize what is in from of him....
