Rachel Harrison is so good at writing books that balance women's fiction & horror -- and I mean that as an unqualified compliment! It's such a joy to read a book with the sort of deeply feminine perspectives and fleshed-out friendships that populate women's fiction AND blood-curdling, gag-worthy horror scenes that will populate my nightmares! I had such a fun time reading this novel -- Rory is a fun heroine, and I was compelled by her relationships with Scarlett and Ian (and by her newfound ... problems). I did find that the central metaphor got a bit wobbly at points--lycanthropy is already overdetermined and oversignified, so adding in a resonance with childhood sexual abuse didn't land quite as hard as it might have. Regardless, a fun & quick read for spooky season, one that my customers will surely love!
Firstly, I just need to gush about how much I loved this book. I am a huge Horror and Gothic fiction enthusiast, and your book gripped me from the get-go –- I almost missed my stop several times when reading on the way to work!
You have written this gorgeous, comedic, dark-fantasy tale of Werewolves and romance, and then layered within themes of identity, sisterhood, trauma, rage, vulnerability…. I thought the whole thing was fantastic!
Book Review…Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison
Rory Morris isn't thrilled to be moving back to her hometown, there are bad memories there. But her twin sister, Scarlett, is pregnant, estranged from the baby's father, and needs support. After a night out at a bar where she runs into an old flame, she hits a large animal with her car. And when she gets out to investigate, she's attacked. Rory survives, but life begins to look and feel different. She's unnaturally strong, with an aversion to silver and suddenly the moon has her in its thrall. But does that mean she's putting those close to her in danger or is embracing the wildness inside of her the key to acceptance?
A quick, fun, weird and disturbing story that would be great for the fall season! Rory has such a dark sense of humor but it fits perfectly to the book! She was a great character! You never knew what she was going to do next or who she was going to piss off! There's a little bit of romance which was ok. I do wish there was a little more to it but everything else about the book was good! Overall it's a fun and quick paranormal romance read with some mystery and plenty of humor! Thank you Let's Talk Books, Berkley Books and Rachel Harrison for sharing this book with me!
Imagine this: You are attacked by a werewolf-like creature on a dark road one night and feel like you might be changing. What would you do? This is precisely the situation that Rory is faced with in this entertaining book and I have to say that I would have made many of the same decisions that she did. On top of the physical changes, Rory is also dealing with quite a few other things. It is really a wonder that she remained sane through it all. I am so glad that I gave this book a try.
I was hooked by this book right away and it held my interest until the very end. I have read a lot of werewolf stories but I really liked the fact that this one was different. The sense of humor woven through the story was a very welcome addition to the story. I really liked Rory and could relate to her as she dealt with a loss of control. The romance in the story was well done and I also appreciated the relationship between Rory and her twin sister.
I would recommend this book to others. This was an incredibly entertaining story filled with great characters, plenty of action, a bit of romance, and some humor. I found this book to be next to impossible to set aside once I started reading and I cannot wait to read more of this talented author’s work.
I received a digital review copy of this book from Berkley Publishing Group.
There is something about Rachel Harrison's writing that makes me can't stop reading it. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors.
Rory leaves her big city life to come back home and help out her twin sister, who is pregnant and estranged from the father. As much as Rory loves her sister she is less than thrilled to be back home where she was more than happy to run away from. Soon after she's back she is attacked by an animal after hitting it with her car. From there life for Rory drastically changes and has her googling werewolves.
I loved this book! Harrison has a talent for writing books with witty female characters that are both cozy and horrific. She can really write a disgusting scene then turn around and make you want to roast marshmallows. And make you crave a good group of girlfriends. I could have easily read this in one sitting if I didn't need to sleep or work.
This is the classic story of werewolf with no new or earth shattering take but also made me think my best friend could come out to me about being a werewolf and I wouldn't bat an eye - well, after the initial shock. The parallels of Rory's transformation and her twin sister's pregnancy I thought was brilliant. The sprinkle of feminism throughout was chef's kiss. Rory is someone I'd like to be friends with. She's also written as a real person and not a fantasy version you sometimes run into with strong female characters. The side characters were also wonderful and so fun to read. They perfectly complimented the story.
This is a perfect October read. Highly recommend.
This was paranormal romance mixed together with horror in the best way possible. It was just the right book to read for the season & I enjoyed the complexity of the characters but also their relatability. We all struggle with the hard parts of being an adult. Bringing new life into this world, trusting someone enough to fully open our hearts to them, dealing with childhood trauma. Now add becoming a werewolf, a thing of legend to the massive stress of adulthood & navigating life. I was thoroughly hooked and enjoyed every minute of this book. A huge fan of this author!
The cover & title are definitely eye-catching and I was drawn in by both as well the synopsis.
4-5 stars, Rachel Harrison's best yet imo. This isn't heavy on the horror, though there are definitely some gross scenes and some bloody scenes (sometimes combined!). You can feel all the things the author is saying about bodies and changing and autonomy and relationships, but it's done so subtly that it doesn't feel like a fairy tale legend but instead incisive commentary.
Thank you Rachel Harrison and Berkley Books for the Advanced Audio Copy!
Rory Morris moves back to her hometown to help her pregnant twin sister, who is estranged from the baby's father. Despite not being happy about coming back due to her past memories, she knows her sister needs her. Upon her return, she ends up hitting an animal after leaving a bar - except this isn't just a normal animal. When she gets out of her car to see what she hit, the animal attacks her and Rory ends up never being the same.
I really enjoyed this!! It was the perfect spooky season read and I definitely recommend it if you're looking for a kinda scary, borderline love story with an edge!
Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison is a standalone novel. Rory Morris, our heroine, is not happy to return to her hometown, but her twin sister, Scarlett is pregnant and estranged from the baby’s father; and Rory needs to be there for her sister. She has bad memories, and has been distant with her mother, who is out of town. When meeting friends at the local bar, she leaves early to drive back to the house, only to accidently hit an animal with her car; when she checks to see what she hit, Rory is attacked.
Rory survives, and is treated at the hospital, with scratches (why have her deep bruises disappeared?), not to mention she suddenly has extra strength, craves meat, angry and feels so very different. After reading up, she begins to realize that she was bitten by a werewolf, and now she is changing into one. Rory tries to learn more about werewolves, and how to lock herself up during a full moon.
While Rory deals with her transformation, she meets an old flame, Ian, who still professes his love for Rory. Rory must also deal with her mother, whom she resents, since she had a bad childhood experience with a former boyfriend of the mother. Rory can’t forgive.
Most of the characters were flawed, which included Rory and Scarlett. Rory was a great heroine, doing everything she can to help her sister, and still deal with the change in her life being what she calls “a monster”. Despite that, Rory was cool, charismatic, sassy and quirky; Scarlett was even more unpredictable. The relationship between Rory and Ian was nice, but what happens when Ian finds out about Rory?
Such Sharp Teeth was a wild ride of a book, that kept me entertained, as well as tense at time. I did like most of the secondary characters. The closer we got to the end, was very exciting, with a satisfying finale. Such Sharp Teeth was very well written by Rachel Harrison.
Thank you Shelf Awareness, Berkley, PRH Audio, and NetGalley for advanced copies in exchange for my honest review.
This was the perfect book to start spooky season! It was my first book by Harrison, and I really love her writing style. The dark humor mixed with horror and a little romance was great for someone who doesn’t love a gory horror novel.
Rory was a great character. She was flawed, but I loved her sarcastic snarky attitude, and the learning to love yourself in whatever body you’re in (even if it’s a werewolf’s body) mentality. Her romance with Ian was realistic and not over the top which I really enjoyed. Her sister, Scarlett and friend, Ash, were great support characters.
I read along on my Kindle while listening to the audiobook, and I thought the narrator, Kristen Sieh was great for this book. She really brought Rory’s story to life.
I look forward to reading more of Harrison’s books.
Continuing the #SpookySeasonReads with this new book! Such Sharp Teeth has a little bit of something for everyone! I am loving the dark humor, sarcasm, drama, romance and werewolves all in one. Though, I wouldn’t classify it as horror. Maybe cozy horror? Is that a thing? 😂 definitely should be. Such a great read. I switched between the ebook version and the audiobook version, I was able to binge over the weekend. Kristen Sieh was the perfect person for this audiobook! She was able to deliver on the dark humor and rage and really brought the book to life!
Sunrises are so beautiful! They are especially welcomed by the main character in this fun book.
⠀
By the same author who brought us spiders and witches and Cackle last year, Rachel Harrison gives us dark woods, twin sisters, and something sinister in those woods this year. Such Sharp Teeth is absolutely perfect for spooky season.
⠀
With quirky flawed characters, a small town romance, family drama, past trauma, and definite life changing events happening, this book was an easy binge read.
⠀
I’d you are attacked by something and thought you were dead, wake up to an oozing wound, and all you can think of it the bacon you smell, where do you go for answers? Google? That really made me laugh. Several things did.
⠀
Just like the spiders in Cackle, there were some gory parts with all the teeth gnashing that were a little tough to read, but they sure make the story.
⠀
I received a gifted galley of SUCH SHARP TEETH by Rachel Harrison for an honest review. Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group, PRH Audio and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review!
SUCH SHARP TEETH follows Rory, a young woman moving back to her hometown, not entirely because it is what she wants. Rory’s sister is pregnant and in need of some extra support, so she is stepping up. After a night out Rory hits something with her car – a large animal she thinks. She gets out to investigate and is attacked and that is where things start to get weird.
Rory is craving meat, silver hurts, and her temper is a bit out of control. While she’s trying to figure out what is going on with her, she’s also trying to figure out what is going on with her sister’s marriage, her own relationship status, and what she needs to do to get her life under control.
After reading and really enjoying CACKLE last year, I was really excited to pick this one up. Holding off to read it until October was tough! I am pleased to say that I really enjoyed this one too (and not only because it was the perfect book to pair with Werewolf Kylee). This mixes some dark humor, romance, and horror. It has some creepy moments, but overall I wouldn’t say this would be too much for the horror adverse. It definitely has some gory scenes and body horror.
I really enjoy Rachel Harrison’s writing and humor and this is a perfect read for this time of year! This book also looks at a lot of themes of belonging, difference, and acceptance. I thought that the mental health and reactions to trauma were well done. The relationships that Rory develops with those around her are well portrayed too.
On the surface, this is the story about a girl named Rory, who upon returning to her small hometown to help her pregnant twin sister, gets bitten by and turned into a Werewolf. It is a story about a Manhattan socialite trying to hide her new signature scent of wet dog, her new ravenous appetite and hankering for hot dogs and rotisserie chickens, and this pesky little monthly transformation problem all while throwing baby showers, building cribs, and rekindling a high school romance.
However, like with all good horror, something sinister lurks beneath the surface. This is also a story about trauma and the many shapes it takes.
Harrison does an excellent job of capturing the complexities of trauma; how it's rarely yours alone to hold, and how no matter how far you run, no matter the distance or time, how it it will find you.
This is an incredibly cheeky, grisly and yet still tender horror novel that left me literally sobbing as I finished it. Anyone who has experienced any kind of traumatic event will see themselves on these pages, but not necessarily in a bad or triggering way, because as Rory says:
"It isn't fair that I have to live with this, but I have to live.
I'm resilient.
My strength doesn’t come from the bad things that have happened to me. It defies those things. It’ll be all right. No matter what, I’ll be all right."
Thank you, Rachel Harrison, for this absolutely beautiful book. You are everything I love about this genre.
And thank you to the publisher, Berkeley Publishing, for an advanced reading copy that allowed me to do this review.
Looking for a fun Halloween story that is more quirky than scary? Then you definitely need to check out Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison.
Rory is living her best life in NYC but drops everything to return to her small home town to support her pregnant twin Scarlet, who has just been abandoned by the baby’s father. One night after Rory reconnects with Ian, her old friend and possible new crush, she hits something with her car. When inspecting the animal, she is attacked and then bit… but was it an animal? Now Rory craves meat constantly, has to trim her nails daily, her hair has never been fuller, and her blood oozes out pewter… but it can’t be… there is no way she is actually turning into a werewolf- right?!
I never thought I would say this but here we are, I loved this bonkers story about werewolves. The dark humor was executed so well and the pacing of the novel made this a quick read. I switched between the audiobook and the ebook and both formats worked so well. Kristen Sieh narrates the audio and is absolute perfection. Her dry delivery and the hidden layer of bubbling rage brought Rory to life. The love story between Rory and Ian felt so authentic and showed a more vulnerable side to Rory which seems hilarious to type as she is now a WEREWOLF.
At the end of the day, Such Sharp Teeth worked from start to finish. This is my first book by Rachel Harrison and now I want to read her entire backlist as I adore her writing style.
I believe I would categorize this novel as a paranormal romance, but honestly I am not sure as it could be horror. Its graphic nature in turning into a werewolf, the devouring of random animals and the fleshy telling of what they ate just had me cringing at the story. I didn't like the vaping and smoking either, unnecessary to the story. I honestly felt this read as a YA book not adult fiction.
While I did laugh out loud a few time, and enjoyed Rory's take No shit attitude, this read was just OK for me.
Thank you Berkley for the gifted copy to read and review.
Such Sharp Teeth

What a great start to spooky reading. This reminded me a little of the Sookie Stackhouse series minus the vampires. It is a little campy, a lot of fun, a little romance and some spooky. I really am a fan of dark comedy and this one does that well.
Honestly is unlike your average horror or even paranormal romance. We have Rory (I kept thinking Gilmore Girls) who is attacked and becomes a werewolf as she temporarily moved home to help her pregnant sister. She must figure out how to adapt and who she can trust with her secret. The cast of characters are flawed and that makes them relatable. The pace moved along and kept me wanting more.
As I switched back and forth from the audio to the book, I can’t decide which I liked better. Kristin Sieh is becoming one of my favorite narrators. She seems to be narrating everything I’m listening to lately.
It was the uniqueness blended with the dark comedy that kept me reading. This should be on your fall reading list if you like werewolves and dark humor.
I was excited to read Such Sharp Teeth after I read and enjoyed Cackle. While the stories are very different, there are lovely similarities in the focus on friendships and growth.
Such Sharp Teeth is by turns a fun and exciting book. I will definitely recommend it to our shoppers.
Short synopsis: Rory is attacked by a creature she thinks is a bear, until the full moon comes and she realizes what she has actually become…. A werewolf!
My thoughts: I haven’t read about werewolves since the Twilight series, and this is definite not your Jacob Black werewolf story.
Fun and witty atmospheric read with a hint of horror and gore mixed it. Great read to add to your October reading list.
This one made me a little squeamish, with the details about flesh and tendons being ripped apart, I visibly cringed multiple times!
That being said, there was also a lot of romance and finding oneself/character growth that happened during the course of the story.
I enjoyed Rory’s character and her no-nonsense attitude, and her twin sister Scarlett that couldn’t be more different from her if she tried.
Read if you love:
* Hints or horror mixed with romance
* Werewolf stories
* Wolfsbane and silver
* Dark humor
Book Review:
Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison
I'm obsessed with this book! I loved it so much. I felt like it was a different take on the werewolf story but still really familiar.
I also loved the push and pull between
Rory and her twin sister Scarlett who is currently pregnant. While their situations couldn't be more different, they are also similar in so many ways.
In the middle of dealing with a potential werewolf crisis, Rory also manages to find an adorable connection with her high school friend Ian.
Make sure you read Such Sharp Teeth this spooky season after it releases in Oct 4th, just not during a full moon 😉
Thanks @netgalley and @berkleypub for this advanced reader!
