Rachel Harrison has written yet another darkly funny supernatural adventure with propulsive writing, engaging characters, and cleverly nuanced messaging. I had a blast following Rory's attempts to navigate her dysfunctional family, as well as the odd changes she has experienced since that night she was attacked. Rory is exactly the type of "hot mess with a big personality" character I love, and she is written with enough nuance to demonstrate that her blustery aggression covers for some deep seated vulnerabilities. This book has lots to say about trauma, pregnancy, and explosive emotions, and it does so while providing an absolutely rollicking rollercoaster ride of a story.
Such Sharp Teeth is the third book I’ve read by Rachel Harrison and I had a fun time reading this one. The story revolves around Rory who goes back to stay in her old hometown for a while to be with her pregnant twin sister, Scarlett. After coming back from a bar one night, Rory gets attacked by an animal that looks a lot like a werewolf, and…well…werewolf chaos ensues.
I love Harrison’s writing. There’s something about the way she tells a story that makes me easily picture what’s happening and her stories just seem to flow so easily. I love the way she combines everyday life with horror and the supernatural. Harrison’s books just have a unique feel to them.
The only thing that made me remove a star from my rating was the reveal at the end. I guessed something early on in the story and it made the ending a little lackluster for me.
Such Sharp Teeth is my second favorite book from Harrison (my favorite of hers is Cackle, probably because I love witches more than werewolves!), but I definitely recommend this book and I think it would be the perfect read for the fall/spooky season. Harrison is becoming one of my favorite horror authors and I look forward to her next book.
Such Sharp teeth was a joy to read. Rachel Harrison has a gift when it comes to somehow making body horror lovely. 5 stars, would give more if I could!
I was lucky enough to win a digital ARC of SUCH SHARP TEETH by Rachel Harrison from a Shelf Awareness giveaway. Have a safe and happy summer, and thanks for the early look!
Rachel Harrison's horror novels have been super quick reads and fun on top of that! Give it a shot and you'll be happy.
I loved the way Harrison tied the werewolf mythos into the unruliness of women's bodies, especially with regard to pregnancy, childhood trauma, and rage. This was a fun read with a lot to chew on.
Werewolves! Ahhh! Werewolves! I love wolves, especially of the Were kind. Werewolves don't really get the love they all deserve and I'm glad someone has written a gripping and warm novel about the beast within.
We all know how I feel about the animal that comes out during a full moon. My excitement for this was very high because the last werewolf book I read was not a good one. I am proud to say that not only did this really hold my interest but it was really good.
This was a decent read. It just wasn't as bloodthirsty as I thought it was going to be. I did love that the author brought the human side of werewolves to life. Wolves have feelings too and they are all human deep down inside. We usually don't see the other side of things and it was a joy to read that.
Let me tell you, Rory was something else. Her character was all over the place and it was fun to read what she was up to and who she was pissing off. She really had me cracking up at points because she was a mess. I really do love a messy character with a lot of personality.
Such Sharp Teeth was a wild ride of a book. Rachel has this way of capturing your attention while slowly giving away all her secrets. It was a delightful read. Who doesn't like a little blood with their romance?
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this novel. I am rating this book based the stars due to lack of time to leave a full review. #NetGalley #SuchSharpTeeth
Rory and Scarlett are identical twins. Rory takes a leave of absence from her job in NYC to be with her pregnant sister in their hometown. On her way home, she is apparently bitten by a werewolf. An interesting premise—identical twins, one of whom is now a werewolf. Should Rory tell anyone? Will anyone believe her? Unfortunately, I didn’t like Rory. Or Scarlett. Or Mom. Or Mia. And not connecting with the characters is a fiction deal breaker for me. I felt kind of sorry for Ian, and was skeptical that he could carry a torch since high school for Rory. I loved Harrison’s last book, Cackle, so I’m very disappointed that this one didn’t work for me. I received an advance copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
When Rory moves back to her hometown to help out her pregnant twin sister, Scarlett, she starts counting the days that she can go back to her real life. Dealing with her sister's moods, her frustrating mother, and the guy who liked her in high school, she just wants to escape. When she's attacked by an animal one night, everything changes.
I really enjoyed this book. I've always loved the female werewolf trope and I wish more books had it. Rory is closed off emotionally and a bit angry about some things in her life (rightly so), and I think that becoming a werewolf was great for helping her let off some steam. She was struggling with it a lot, which I imagine anyone would, and it was pretty sad that her family was so crappy and unsupportive. I didn't like her mother or sister, but Ian was a great love interest.
As a character Rory was great. She was quick-witted, a good sister and friend, and a little messy, which was fun to read about. The one thing I would've liked to see was a showdown with her sister. *Spoilers about this below the review* There really wasn't a resolution to that storyline, but overall this was a great book. The body horror was gory and gross, and I loved it! Rachel Harrison is great at writing a captivating horror/thriller. I highly recommend!

Scarlett never revealed why she lied about Matty and why she lied to get Rory to come stay with her. She didn't believe Rory about CSA when they were younger, and she barely believed her about being a werewolf despite the proof. There really wasn't a resolution to that storyline and I disliked Scarlett very much!
THis book was excellent. I wrote a Library Journal review of it and that will come out soon. I want it to be a starred review as Harrison is such a spectacular writer and really outdoes herself with this book.
Not all werewolf fiction has to be erotic. This story has plenty of love, sure. But it also has authentic characters, witty dialogue and enough twists and turns to keep the book in your hands well past bedtime. I loved the narrative voice in this story. Rory, our main character, felt like someone I knew. I was happy to follow her through her present-tense thrill ride that included trauma, the woes of returning home, and a heartfelt look at how relationships develop. This book is perfect for fans of Grady Hendrix looking for another fun and horrifying read. While it is about werewolves, I’m not sure this story could’ve felt any more human.
When I saw Rachel Harrison had a new novel I knew I had to read as I could not put her previous novels down and this one was no exception .
. Rory Morris reluctantly returns home from her glamorous life in New York to temporarily help out her twin sister who is pregnant. After a night out she is in accident and hits a large animal and is bitten. After this her life is changed forever . Horror , romance , suspense and edgy humor this is another brilliant book from this terrific writer
What an intense, wild, and amazing ride! This was so so good I’m not even sure how to put it into words. I honestly couldn’t stop reading and finished it way too fast! Rachel Harrison is a fabulous author, I recently read her book Cackle and loved it btw (wink wink: read this one as well). But omg Such Sharp Teeth is even more mind-blowing goodness, with a dash of spectacular. I have never read a werewolf book this well written. It explored so many different themes and character relationships and entangled it all together perfectly. Please, please read this book!
3.25 stars
I haven’t found myself reading many werewolf novels in my life. That being said, this was a pretty decent one. I didn't find it scary, but I did find that the characters were well written and the story itself was good. It was medium paced. I’ll keep this author on my radar going forward.
I enjoyed this book and thought it did a good job of balancing the paranormal elements with a nuanced exploration of the impacts of psychological trauma on our bodies. I also appreciated the sweet romance, particularly since it was not the sole focus of the story--the relationship between the sisters (who are, each in their own way, dealing with some deep traumas) was a solid focus of the story. Recommend!
