Arthur Beauchamp's retirement isn't going as he thought it would. His grandson is visiting for the summer and he likes that. But his wife Margaret has declared for the Green Party seat and he's not sure he likes that. Several judges in the area have been killed in the past year and he knows he doesn't like that.

The one getting the most notice is the one in which Arthur's nemesis, Cudworth Brown, is charged. Cudworth had spent a week or so on a platform up a tree with Margaret in a forestry protest and rumors had flown. This time, Cud, a poet and ladies' man, had gone to an authors' dinner at a judge's residence. He and the judge's wife got frisky during dinner and had a rendezvous afterwards. Sometime during the night, the judge went over the balcony and died and Cud was arrested. In spectacularly bad timing, Cud's lawyer has had a breakdown due to his divorce and is hospitalized and everyone wants Arthur to take Cud's case. Arthur surely doesn't want to but feels the pressure. Can he save the day?

This is the third Arthur Beauchamp novel. Readers will learn about the Canadian government and courts as well as the British Columbian province. There are plenty of eccentric characters to round out the cast. Arthur has a new lawyer for an assistant, there's a legal secretary from Hong Kong who seems mysterious, the local mechanic is full of schemes and Margaret's candidacy isn't helping his marriage. The plot is twisty but tight and the reader will enjoy the unraveling of the crime. I listened to this novel and the narrator was perfect for Arthur's character, understated but at the top of his game just like Arthur. This book is recommended for mystery readers.

This was a good read but I should have read all the preceeding books before beginning this one...I was a bit lost and was missing some backstory. So I am now adding all of William Deverell's books to my TBR!

Let me start this review by saying if you’re looking for a mystery that is smart and witty you need to read this I love the wording and language style he uses to tell the story this is the third book in the author Beauchamp Series and although this case with Carter is mainly with Brian I don’t think the reader is missing out. I thought this was a great book and it ended in a sort of a kind a cliffhanger and I hope that’s the fourth book. I receive this book from NetGalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any errors as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.

When I first began to listen to this book, it was confusing. I wasn't sure what was real and what was some character's imagination. I kept trying to find the right word to describe the story, but none of these quite does it justice: eclectic, complex, quaint, charming, and at times hilarious. I know, those don't seem to go together, but yet once you listen to this book, you'll perhaps agree each has some merit.

The story focuses on a few main characters: a retired attorney living on a remote island off the coast of mainland British Columbia, his wife who is running for Parliament, a drug-addicted lawyer who is writing a novel, and an annoying poet accused of murder. The settings on the island and also in more seedy parts of Vancouver couldn't be more different, but add lots of interest to the story line. Supporting characters are unique and vividly described.

This was one of the most unique books I've ever read or listened to. In the beginning, I considered giving up on the story because it was confusing, but something made me want to see how it ended. And, I was not disappointed. When I think back on it now, I'm amazed at how the author intertwined so many different subplots and so vividly described the settings so that I felt as though I was there. It's truly an awesome book--yes, there is mystery, but so much more. I'd give it 10 stars if I could!

Thanks to NetGalley for the audiobook ARC!

Kill All the Judges is a very interesting novella that proves that you can fit a 'story within a story' concept in a small container. The action comes swift and succinctly, both in the novel and in the external story. A quick and interesting read!

Kill All the Judges is a frenetic dark legal crime comedy/drama, and the third Arthur Beauchamp novel by William Deverell. Originally published in 2008, this audiobook format, read by Michael Benyaer was released 15th May 2022 by ECW Press. The book contains 332 pages in print format and is available in all formats.

This is a very dryly humorous book with a large cast of unlikable and out-of-control secondary characters and an absolutely frenetic plot with wall-to-wall drugs, mayhem, and murder. The author is unquestionably talented and adept at his craft. The writing is technically brilliant although the reader is dragged along for the ride. There were numerous places in the narrative where I was by turns disgusted by the scenes being written and simultaneously amazed at the sheer difficulty of writing the point of view and scene descriptions in any comprehensible manner.

In some ways it reminded me of Hunter S. Thompson's more frenzied offerings wrapped around the core of a solid murder mystery. The writing is very very good. The characters (with the possible exception of the series protagonist Arthur Beauchamp) are very very bad. There are great swathes of the book which are NSFW with drugs, explicit sex, felonies galore, and murder. I didn't enjoy the read very much and I strongly suspect that readers will have to be fond of nearly surreal gonzo sex, drugs, and rock & roll in their fiction to be in the right frame of mind. For those blessed few, this is a series which is currently still being written and will be a good candidate for binge reading. Book 8 was released in 2021.

The unabridged audiobook has a run time of 13 hours and 15 minutes. The narrator does a masterful job of voicing a massive cast of characters with a wide variety of accents and ages. I was impressed by the narration and repelled at the action of the characters at the same time. The sound and production quality were high throughout the recording.

Three and a half stars. Definitely a different read and a niche one. It is blackly funny and well written.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Very disappointing. Great plot idea, great potential, but it was SO INCREDIBLY slow and dry. I felt I was aging years with each passing chapter. The dry humor was lost in the complete dullness of the story. There was no entertainment whatsoever. Just a dastardly awful book.

Publisher: ECW Press Audio
Genre: Humor/Mystery Thriller

My Rating: 2.3

I guess I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind for this.
I love mysteries and the idea of the addition of Humor sounded appealing.
The characters were indeed characters. However, the humor just didn’t working for me.
