What an enthralling read! I had originally purchased and read the original print of the book and am happily pleased that the re-print and further edited version definitely cuts a lot of foam that didn't need to be present. Love the two main characters and the love story that enfolds in this beautiful fantastical world.
DNF @ 66% because I couldn't deal with the extensive and repetitive descriptions, and with the fact that half of this book reads like a fanfic for The Witcher to the point where Ciri's and Amaris' storylines are extremely similar. It's just a big no for me. Wouldn't recommend.
This was a very meh book for me. It felt forced and rushed, and a lot like the author was trying to hard with their prose. The story was pretty boring. This one was a miss for me.
This wasn't my favorite. It felt like the author was trying a bit too hard with majority of thr writing... a little too flowery if you ask me. Overall I thought the pacing was slow and it was hard for me to really get into it. I didn't love the MC... and questioned her loyalty to other characters. It just wasn't really for me.
I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
In eight days I only got 140 pages into this book. For context, I can finish 140 pages, especially in a book that I really enjoy, in about one or two hours (and that’s being generous). I requested this book before I knew that it contained a lot of problematic content. Since I did receive the book, I felt like I should at least give it a try since it’s been sitting on my NetGalleyShelf for a while.
This book was so boring. It was a lot of telling, not showing. It felt like the author was trying to have flowery prose, but it didn’t further the story in any way. I did manage to make it to some of the problematic behavior that I, at this point, know is in it. I read of the whipping Nox receives so that Amaris’ skin is not marred, which is very problematic. I also got to the point where Nox is on her way to the whorehouse because she has taken Amaris’s place being sold into prostitution. Which is also very problematic. I found it very disturbing how loyal and dedicated Nox is to Amaris, but Amaris had no problem running off with a stranger (assassin guy) and not even saying to him “Hey, let’s pick up my friend who’s in the woods on our way out of here.” Or “We need to go back and find my friend who is hiding in the woods!” Amaris seems like she’s enjoying traveling with the assassin with barely a thought to Nox, who to the best of her knowledge, is somewhere out in the woods trying to survive on her own. Because Amaris doesn’t even know that she got sold into prostitution. I just could not get myself excited to open up this e-book and continue to read this word-y, problematic novel with a narcissistic character that we’re supposed to be rooting for? I have heard that later in the book Nox is revealed to be a succubus, which kind of implies that it’s OK that she got sold into prostitution. So, I literally had nothing to entice me to finish this book.
The Night and Its Moon by [Author] is a captivating and magical story. The plot is well-crafted and the characters are well-developed. The prose is beautifully written and the imagery is vivid and stunning. However, the pacing of the story is slow and there are times where the story feels a bit too drawn out. Overall, it is a good book that is worth the read, but doesn't quite reach the level of a five star read. Additionally the author's actions towards reviews on Goodreads causes me to pause on wanting to read anything further of hers.
I only got about halfway through the book. Although it was not bad, I couldn't push through. I don't know the first thing about writing a book but this story seemed to bounce around a lot and I just could not get into it. I will try to read it again at a later time.
This book was poorly written and extremely drawn out that it felt like very little progress was being made. The characters had little to no depth and the light/dark archetype could have worked if it hadn’t hinged on the character’s descriptions so much.
I won't be reviewing this book as I keep seeing a lot of drama with the author and I believe the editior which doesn't really make me feel that comfortable reading it, never mind reviewing it.
I am in love with both Piper CJ and The Night and Its Moon. I purchased this initially in the indie published and have since bought multiple publisher editions.
The effort that Piper puts into the mythology and folklore of her characters and the world around them is astounding. I know that she has a degree in Folklore and her love for it shines. The characters stand out on their own and are distinguishable from the side characters that we meet along the way. I was entirely invested in Nox and Amaris, and I only want their happiness above all.
The pain that the characters go through along the way gave me anxiety and I am certain there were several chapters where I did not breathe at all. I felt their pain like it was my own and each accomplishment that they made along the way made my heart soar.
I am ecstatic that we will get more from this world as I am certainly not ready to let go of these characters after the next book (or two).
I wanted to love this book but it didn’t hit its stride with me. I kept picking it up and putting it back down. There were scenes that gripped me but not enough. I did eventually finish the book tho, so it wasn’t a DNF, and I’ll probably get the sequels.
Well, I'll be honest, the drama surrounding it kept me from reading this for a while. I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this and I considered just sending it back but I've relented.
I'll be quick and frank about this,
there are things I liked about this book: the characters felt very real, I loved some of the details in the writing (although from time to time it could feel a bit overbearing), cool worldbuilding and of course can't miss the bi representation.
However, this should've gone through more rounds of edits. Other reviewers have already mentioned this which is why I'm not mentioning it in detail but I do think that's the main issue of the book. Other than that I wished to see more differentiation between the POVs/characters, especially because for me it can be hard to differentiate them properly.
There is potential I think, but I also think even if this book had been edited and corrected the way most published books are, for some reason I still think I wouldn't be as fond of it mostly due to personal preference because some of the things included in this book are really not my jam.
I really tried but still wondering if it was truly not the right time for me or if it was due to another reason.
DNF at 30%
i thought this book had been edited, but apparently, and non-shockingly so, the author doesn’t follow through with her promises, in addition to the poor behavior she has displayed against criticism.
grammar errors, awful, confusing writing. i will not be reviewing or reading any of piper cj’s future work.
This is one that I think I need to try in print. I know ive had issues with some books reading them in ebook so I might try this one again if I ever get a print copy. However, reading this as an ebook I am kind of meh about it. This is a take it or leave it story that was ok but it didn't really make me think omg I need to talk about this book to everyone.
Due to recent issues that have come to light regarding this author and her treatment of reviewers that did not provide a positive response, I do not feel comfortable reviewing this book or future works by this author.
i read the original extra special first edition and enjoyed the story and worldbuilding a lot, but the book has greatly improved after the rounds of editing + added scenes in this edition. i’m excited for an adult queer fantasy story to skyrocket into the mainstream like this and show there’s a demand for stories like this, and i look forward to seeing where this series goes
I line anything I’ve read! Such an amazing read that had me captivated from start to finish! From the moment I started until I finished I couldn’t put it down!
I'm shocked that this has been edited twice because the spelling mistakes alone make me question that. However, that is the least of my issues.
The book vacillates between trying to emulate CS Lewis and sounding like fanfiction written by a first timer.
There is no sense of what the authors actual voice is, just her trying to write rather than actually writing her own story in her own unique narration.
The plot is non existent. The romance is non existent. The representation of sex work seems very demeaning. I would not recommend this book to any person as I don't think there's anything of substance within it.
I really enjoyed this book, unfortunately, this world isn't filled with gay fantasy novels as it should.
The book is the perfect first installation in a fantasy series. The world-building is a big part of the book, but I didn't feel overwhelmed, the author also left space for the characters and their personalities and struggles to shine through.
The book is just the right amount of romantic, sweet with a good amount of violence and series topics, such as mental illnesses and religious trauma.
