I think this author has a lot of potential to improve. The story idea is original, and she certainly understands how to market a book on TikTok. I will try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible for those still interested in reading the book.
I was waiting for the part of the story that would hook me and keep me going to learn what was next, and that moment never came. I almost didn’t finish the book a couple of times, both due to certain problematic scenes and many overwritten pages. There is a lot of room to make the story more clear and concise. The main characters spend way too much time apart, almost as if the author stretched material for potential sequels. The way race is incorporated into this world is icky - for example, Nox is constantly suffering for Amaris.
Thanks to Bloom Books and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was super excited to get a copy of The Night and its Moon! Ever since Piper announced it on TikTok I knew I wanted to read it.
This story follows Nox and Amaris who grow up in an orphanage together until they are in their teens when events pull them to different places. Both girls become powerful young women in their own unique ways, with a goal to find one another again. If you are a fan of fae, monsters, witches, and other creatures of lore, I think you will enjoy this!
I will say the story was a little slow to start for me. It took me until about the halfway mark to get hooked and feel like the action started. There was a lot of character building and backstory before I felt like things started really happening. Once the action started, though, I was in it.
Thanks to NetGalley for sending me a copy!
I went into reading this book completely blind. I knew nothing about this book, the first in a series, or the author so this review is 100% my own opinion.
The beginning felt slow and initially I wanted to DNF until about 25-30% into the book then I absolutely fell in love. After reading further into the book the beginning makes complete sense. It was a necessary piece to the depth of the characters and plot. I loved all the characters and their roles within the story. There were moments that had my jaw on the floor in pure shock and other moments where my adrenaline had my heart racing to find out what was going to happen! This is definitely one of my new favorite reads of 2022. I can’t wait for the next book in this series! 4.5 ⭐️
Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS Bloom Books and the author for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I am DNFing this book around page 200. The 1st few chapters were really interesting and I kept wondering what was going to happen and what the main plot was going to be, and then I found myself wondering what the main point of it was all 200 pages in. Not that you always need to tell what the main point is, but this didn't seem to be that type of book. It was VERY character driven, but the only things I knew that was different between the two girls was their appearance and which paths they ended up taking after Farleigh. The story seemed to rush from point to point quickly and without a lot of reason other than to quickly move things along, but with no main end in sight it was difficult to keep up with this moving. As far as the content, I could see it getting a lot darker after the point that I stopped reading which is why I stopped where I did.
I was also unaware that there was any drama around this book before I decided to stop reading it.
I'm giving it a 2 star instead of a 1 because I didn't HATE it, I just think it could stand to be edited a couple more times.
***I received an arc in exchange for an honest review
I was skeptical when I first saw this was a viral tiktok book and wanted to see what the hype was all about.. Disregarding all of the hate that has spawned from this book and the seemingly irresponsible behavior from authors/editers/reviewers I'll just say that this book has potential but you can very easily see that this was a quick to publish book. The editing is non existent. But if someone actually took the time to properly edit, I can see it being a good read.
ARC kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest and fair review.
Nox and Amaris are two orphans who live at Farleigh orphanage controlled by the church, The problem is that Farleigh is not really an orphanage and the church makes everyone believe so. Nox and little Amaris know they have to fight to survive and they will do anything possible to do so and to stay together.
I really wanted to like this book, but it just wasn't for me.
The story was full of grammar mistakes and typos almost in every sentence (very poorly edited). It was so repetitive and redundant, especially in regards to adjectives: the author puts so many of them everywhere and all throughout the story she keeps repeating them, never changing, not even a comma. Furthermore, it was so so slow-paced and I was about to DNF it several times. It was so hard to keep going and hoping for something better which could help interest me more to the story (spoiler: there was none).
One thing I would have changed was the age of the main characters: they are young children and, in my opinion, it would have sounded better if they were at least teenagers. I also felt there were some problems inside the story and, after reading some reviews, I guess I was (and am) not the only one.
I kinda liked the idea of the worldbuilding: the author could have written a masterpiece but unluckily that did not happen. I am very disappointed, sorry.
Lastly, I feel disappointed about the controversy regarding the author's behaviour that happened at the beginning of this year.
My rating: almost 2!
I felt like this book was not for me. The series has a lot of potential but the writing style and pace was just not my cup of tea.
The book moves at a slow crawl of a pace until about 40% of the way through, but even then you only get a few interesting plot points. I could see what the author was trying to do with setting the background but I think the writing style in doing so just did not click with me so I didn’t have the “Aha!” moments that the author was setting up. The writing is a little overly descriptive so you really get lost in the prose and end up not really noticing these key plot points from their childhood. Then later in the book you get lost in the imagery and prose that the plot building gets lost and doesn’t feel that important.
The synopsis felt a little misleading to me, I didn’t feel that angst of the characters stopping at nothing to reunite from both main characters. Additionally, the relationship between the two main characters also felt a little one sided. I just could not understand their feelings for each other and am wondering if I was missing something.
My biggest issue with this book is that I did not feel like the book ended at a good spot. I still had a lot of unresolved questions and didn’t really feel like any big plot points were resolved. There were some revelations to the mysteries but I didn’t feel like it was anything too crazy or mind blowing. The overall plot line does seem like it could be interesting but wasn’t interesting enough that I think I could get through three more books in this four book series.
I would not recommend this to anyone who enjoys medium to fast paced books or adventurous fantasy. I would recommend this to anyone who likes very descriptive imagery and prose or dark fantasy. Additionally, this book should come with a few trigger warnings of abuse, violence, and torture and has adult content.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher (Bloom Books) for providing me with an eARC for my honest review of the book.
I made it roughly 20% into the book before I quit on it. It’s not for me. The punishment and the disrobing scenes were enough for me to put the book down and not think twice about not finishing and the writing style just wasn’t appealing to me as a reader.
My personal belief is that the characters should be aged up, not children, if those scenes are going to be in a book.
The writing was also very tell, not show, which doesn’t appeal to me. I want the story to develop organically, not be force fed to me.
Long story short, The Night and its Moon just wasn’t for me. Thank you to NetGalley and Fawn Storytelling for the opportunity to read and review The Night and its Moon but Piper CJ. It’s a 1/5 for me.
I’m actually really disappointed to find some many racist stereotypes and just racism in general here. While I deeply appreciate and am thankful for the opportunity, I barely got through the first half of the book before these issues arose and were quite present.
The book was too slowed paced aside from the huge issue above. I will not be sharing this book beyond my opinions stated here.
Wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one, and I really wanted to love it more than I did. I liked the characters, I liked the "strong willed" vibes, but it was a bit repetitive, a bit lacking in spots, and I understand where other readers are feeling icky in spots (racism/ a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, which I am not claiming to be better than, I write terribly myself / the author bragging they rushed through this (which you can really tell if you read a lot, and that ISN'T a bad thing, but its not something that I feel good about bragging about where there ARE so many editorial issues and triggers)
I am proud of Piper for getting this picked up, but I just wish there was more to it instead of 500 (ish) pages of a quite repetitive story line with not as much character development as I thought there would be. I am looking forward to the edited version in the fall, and potentially a novella (she mentioned on Instagram) and hope the feedback/honesty isn't portrayed as "angry booktokers" because thats not what this is at all.
Thank you Netgalley for an ARC of this book! My honest opinion, this was ok. Not great but the author definitely has promise! The characters were likeable and the writing was pretty good.
The Night and Its Moon is of the best books that I've read this year so far! Rarely do I find myself attached to characters in a book even though I very much love stories that are character-driven. This book was a game changer for me with its characters. I'm totally attached to the characters and I'm very invested in this story. I have already preordered the sequel because I loved this book so much! I highly recommend The Night and Its Moon for readers who enjoy the fantasy genre.
I wanted to enjoy this so badly even though the author has been doing some odd things on tiktok which has led to me being a little concerned about reviewing this. There were several problematic elements in this book that didn't sit right with me which led me to ultimately lower my star rating and decide not to rate/promote it on goodreads or any of my platforms. I liked the concept of the story and the fact that it is sapphic which made me originally pick it up.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a free E-Arc of this book in exchange for an honest opinion!
The Night and Its Moon by Piper C.J. is a fantasy book with around 550 pages or so. I went into this book knowing nothing of the plot or the author and the drama. Unfortunately, I can`t really say that I love this book. I am pretty sure the idea of the story has a ton of potential, but the whole book just feels rushed. Some of the writting sounds not ... right. Some scenes are way too long to keep the readers attention. I wish the whole book and the story would have rounded up nicely before publishing.
Well, I hope the next one will be better.
I love the queerness of this novel and the representations. The fantasy was also good but the pacing was really slow - almost excruciatingly slow. Nevertheless, I finished this novel after many hiatus. The author certainly has great imagination and would love to see the characters to be fleshed out more. Their growth was a bit lacking but the atmosphere at the latter part made up for it. I also have a love-and-hate relationship with fae, dragons and otherworldly beings, but in this novel, I loved them a lot.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately, the racist tropes and repetitive writing and numerous spelling errors had me DNF'ing this about 25% of the way in. The book was extremely slow paced and forced. I honestly would not recommend this book to anyone. I really thought that with it being republished that the issues would have been fixed at least in some capacity.
Thanks Netgalley for the chance to read this book early!
So I really enjoyed my time with this story - it took me awhile to get through - but I really enjoyed it.
I love the characters and the plot development so far. I honestly can’t wait to see where it goes next!
I didn’t particularly enjoy this book, I found the writing style tried to be very poetic but it felt forced.
I have obviously read the controversy surrounding the book online but prior to reading it I was not aware so it did not colour my view, but I do think it’s important to note.
I found the characters to be sweet and the premise of the story was enjoyable, but for me the execution lacked.
I had the opportunity to read this prior to publication as an ARC from the publisher, Bloom (an imprint of Sourcebooks), and I gobbled it up! This is the first in a planned trilogy that follows two female protagonists in a Fae realm from their beginnings in an orphanage to their diverging but equally thrilling adventures once they leave. This is the first sapphic romance I’ve read, and I found it super compelling. The author, Piper CJ, has a large following online and apparently this book was originally self published. Pretty amazing to see it picked up by traditional printing after finding an audience. The Night and its Moon publishes September 20th, so add it to your pre-orders and library queues!
I absolutely loved this book! The story is really good and I love the main characters. The characters grow into powerful strong woman and I loved reading about the journey they had to get them there! I really took my time to read this book and enjoy it because I didn't want it to end.
I'm so curious what will happen in the next book! 😍
When I got the mail that I could arc read the revised edition of this book I was so happy! I actually learned about this book from my wife, who does not read, she saw it on tiktok a few months ago and immediately thought it would be a book for me because it was bi fantasy and I'm bi 🌈😄 I bought her first edition on Amazon then and I will definitely buy the revised edition in a physical copy.
Also I love the covers of these book!
